«Dios hará inquisición de vuestros juicios»: Antonio Enriquez Gómez' Search for Justice

    Get PDF
One theme uniting the work of Antonio Enríquez Gómez (1600-1663), a Spanish Marrano who resided in France for many years, was his search for justice— personal, earthly and divine. By examining two of his plays and two treatises, above all the comically sardonic Inquisición de Lucifer y Visita de todos los diablos (n.d.), a text recently discovered in Amsterdam, it is possible to see that this author bases his thesis, in part, on two geographical locations: «Peralvillo», which symbolizes the miscarriage of earthly justice, and «el valle de Josafá», where divine justice will prevail.

Between Necromancers and Ventriloquists: The έγγαστρίμυθοι in the Septuaginta

This contribution pursues a lexicographical study of the Greek term έγγαστρίμυθος, used by the translators of Septuaginta to render Hebrew terms with unambiguous necromantic connotations. However, the Greek literature previous to this translation cannot yield sufficient evidence that these connotations were inherent to the term in the Classical period. The term signified initially a sort of 'inspired diviner' who prophesied by means of a bellyspirit; further details about his profession are however somewhat unclear.

    Get PDF
This article presents the Spanish translation of the Demonstration 19 of Aphrates (Against the Jews). This polemic work deals with Jewish mesianism and the return of Jewish people to the city of Jerusalem, but it does so from a point of view that is remarkably free from antisemitism. Thus, he focuses his critics, on arguments given by a clever interpretation of the biblical text.

After the indictment by the Holy Office at Valladolid of a seigniorial corregidor and his family, we have tried to explain the relationship established among the converted Portuguese that started to come to Castile at the end of XVI century and the nobility, specially those whose territories were near the Portuguese frontier. From a microhistorical point of view, this case can also be helpful to analyze the tensions among elite classes and the seigniorial administration and its agents. Arguments as the blood cleanness or a supposed criptojudaism had a great importance and could determine the intervention of the Inquisition. Under these circumstances, the Holy Office was more implicated in a fight between local factions than in a heresy persecution.

    Get PDF
The Old Latin studies have been enriched with new evidence, very useful for the reconstruction of the textual history of 1-2 Maccabees since the most important critical edition of these books (De Bruyne - Sodar 1932). Among the witnesses included in that edition, the first six chapters of 1 Maccabees in Hubertianus Codex (British Museum, Additional 24142) deserve special attention. Its text is close to other manuscripts that give evidence to a recension current in the 4th century. B. Fisher described this Latin Biblical text in 1965, yet despite its relevance to the textual history, it still remains unedited. With this edition the author shows the importance of this manuscript which fills a gap in the history of the Old Latin text of 1-2 Maccabees, specially for the understanding of L recension.

This article is an analysis of Abraham Ibn Ezra's philosophical theories in his commentary on Job and how he uses them to interpret some biblical verses and to give a rational justification of the main question of this biblical book, namely, the sufferings of the rigtheous. In this article, I analyze how Ibn Ezra uses philosophical theories of his time, such as the origin of evil, the soul-body duality, and the problem of the limitation of the human knowledge, to explain some metaphors in the biblical text.
