Desarrollos apocalípticos y místicos de algunas expresiones bíblicas
The aim of this paper is to analyze a few biblical expressions of fear and terror and study their relationship with apocalyptic and mystic environments. It is divided in two parts: first, I examine the terms מלד בלחוח ,עח צרה (Iob 18:14), and לילה פחר (Ps 91:5) from both a philological and mythological point of view. And second, I present these topics in Hekhalot literature and the Enoch cycle stressing three basic aspects, namely the fear inspired by the divine chariot, the dread to the angels, and the risks of heavenly ascensions.
We have found in the section Escribanía Mayor de Rentas of the Archivo General de Simancas (Valladohd) the annual distribution lists made by the Jewish gatherings and Jewries of Castile in 1484, 1485, 1490 and 1491. The texts provide information on the amount they had to pay for the specific tax of the ethnic and religious minorities called «servicio y medio servicio», and thus shed new, important light on Jewish life in medieval Spain.
The Textual Significance of Spanish Polyglot Bibles
Within the history of the Biblical text, the 16th century Spanish Polyglot Bibles are monumental productions that do not deserve to fall into oblivion. This article points out the historical and philological aspects that better reveal their significance in the world of the Renaissance and their unquestionable transcendence in Biblical philology. Cardinal Cisneros' tenacity and generosity first, and then Benito Arias Montano's knowledge made possible the edition of these two Spanish Polyglot Bibles, the Complutensian and the Royal. They constitute the point of departure of modern Biblical textual criticism, whose principles keep alive that initial spirit that leads to a wider acquaintance with the text.
The Orden de oraciones de mes arreo (Ferrara 1555) and a Bakasah composed by Abraham Usque
The British Library owns the only known copy of a prayer-book composed in 1555 by Abraham Usque: the Libro de Oraciones de mes arreo. Usque was well aware of the difficulties, encountered by many former Marranos still unfamiliar with Jewish liturgy, to follow the sometime long and complicated synagogue service. Abraham tried to provide a simplified version of the Siddur and abridged some part of it. In the Prologue he claimed to have presented the prayers in a plain and straight way (arreo): without the necessity of having to leaf through the book to find the continuation of the service. Abraham inserted in his Siddur a new prayer by which he asked the Lord to put an end to the sufferings of Israel, to raise up a scion of David and to restore His people to its ancient glory and dignity. The Author wanted to provide a reassuring answer to the anxieties and hopes of his generation. Likewise the Jews who left Spain in 1492, also the Portuguese Marranos who reached Ferrara towards the middle of the XVIcentury, continued to cherish the deeply rooted cultural values of their erstwhile homeland and considered their departure from Iberian Peninsula as a most catastrophic event. Abraham Usque asked the Lord to be content with the punishments already inflicted to His people and to grant His pardon to the sons of Israel who had completely abandoned every idolatrie practice.
Names of Accents and Diacritical Punctuation Signs in Poems by North African Jewish Poets
In several Sephardi printed editions of the Pentateuch one can find a list of thirty-four names of accents and diacritical punctuation signs. This list is called the Zarca List, named after its opening accent. I have come across four poems based on this list:פלאד קיוויחי, written by the Tunisian poet Fradji Shawat (sixteenth century);וי כי חזקה האמה, written by the Moroccan poet Shmu'el Elbaz (nineteenth century);קודר הילכחי , probably written by the Moroccan poet Amram Bar-Yehuda Elbaz (nineteenth century); and אהה עלי כי נקף, written by the Moroccan poet Rafael Aaron Monsoñego (nineteenth century). In all four poems both literal and figurative meanings may be ascribed to the names of the signs. The first three poems follow the Zarca List almost accurately; «form» is an important element in these poems, and it seems as if their purpose is to help memorize the Zarca List. As for אהה עלי כי נקף the poetic freedom concerning the order of the sign names (and to a certain extent their contextual interpretation) creates a more balanced poem in terms of relationship between «form» and «content».En varias ediciones impresas sefardíes del Pentateuco hay una lista de treinta y cuatro nombres de acentos y de signos diacríticos de puntuación.
A note on the Sumerian expression SI-ge4-de3/dam
The expression SI-ge4-dam/de3 appears in some of the loan documents of the Ur III period where it was used to establish the interest rate or the loan fee. In addition, it is sometimes preceded by ki-ba 'in its/this place/ground' or, in some cases, ma2 -a 'in the boat'. The regular verb SI.g was closely related, perhaps even synonymous with, the reduplication verb ḡar/ḡa2-ḡa2 'to put' or 'to place'. While it may be concluded that SI-ge4-dam/de3 had nothing to do with the verb si 'to fill' or gi4 'to return', the correct analysis of the expression remains somewhat uncertain. The article proposes that the SI should be read se and understood as a phonetic writing for the regular verb se3.g 'to put', 'to place'. The combination of the verb with the ki-ba may suggest that a more parochial form of keeping products existed side by side with the large centralized granaries and storehouses of the city.
The Dialogus pro ecclesia contra synagogam was edited by Gonzalo de Santa María and printed by Pablo Hurus at the end of the 15 th century. It was attributed by Labrosse and, more recently, by Orfali to the 13th century Dominican friar Thibaut de Sézanne (Theobaldus of Sexannia). In this article it is shown that the Dialogus is an adaptation of two older treatises. Errores judaeorum in Talmut and Pharetra fidei catholicae, the former attributed to Thibaut in the manuscript transmission. The Dialogus is transmitted in fourteen manuscripts; all of them come from Middle Europe and are listed here. In one of them the scribe attributes it to Nicholas of Strasbourg OP, visitor of the Dominican province of Teutonia in 1325. This attribution seems to be highly probable in the light of some aspects of Nicholas' works.
Text in context: a textual-linguistic approach to Amos 4: 7-8
This article will study Amos 4:7-8 from a textlinguistic approach: the form of this section will be analyzed within the structure of the chapter in which it is inserted. Such an analysis is needed because the set of verb forms used seems to be different from the rest of verb forms used in the chapter. While the whole chapter tends to be structured as a brief chain of narrative passages with wayyiqtol, the structure of Amos 4:7-8 seems to be a predictive section -developed through weqatal- inserted or pasted in the middle of the chapter. Translations usually do not note the difference between the set of verb forms used. A textlinguistic analysis of Amos 4:7-8 will show that the kind of discourse used here is different from the one used in the rest of the chapter, and, therefore, this difference should be reflected in the translation. The specific function of some discourse types is also discussed.
