    Get PDF
Prof. David J. Wasserstein has stated in a recent article that one can with all certainty say that the Jews of Visigothic Spain did not have a Jewish culture and had no knowledge of Hebrew. Concerning the Jews in Muslim Spain, he believes that they woud have simultaneously learnt two languages, Hebrew and Arabic. As a result, still according to Wasserstein, the learning of Hebrew would have been a problem, since the Jews of the Visigothic period did not know Hebrew and in Muslim Spain no relevant Jewish emigration took place. The present study reviews Prof. Wasserstein's opinions and attempt at showing that his arguments can not be supported by the evidence.

One of the main concerns of the biblical commentaries of Abraham Ibn Ezra is the study of the Hebrew grammar and its characteristics. There we can find indeed many of the theories he had on the subject. Ibn Ezra includes remarks about the consonants, punctuation, morphology of verbs and nouns, etc., using several expressions which are characteristic of his own style. The present paper aims at analyzing the grammatical aspects of the commentary of Ibn Ezra on Lamentations, and at the same time comparing his theories with those of other Medieval commentators.

The present paper examines all the examples of the midrash Lamentations Rabbah in which a textual detail is commented in the language of the Masorah. All these examples are treated in a very uniform way, with a similar structure. Most of the notices they offer are verified in Masoretic lists and treatises. The conclusions of this study stress the significance of the Masoretic type notes in the studies on the interpretation of the Biblical text, and vice versa, the relevance of haggadic midrašîm in the studies about the history and development of Masorah.

Even though the first commandment in the Bible, «Be fruitful and multiply» (Gen. 1:28), countered the development of sexual asceticism in early Judaism, yet there is clear evidence of persons and groups choosing voluntary celibacy as a Jewish way of life. The evidence concerning the Essenes, the Therapeutae, Banus, Shim'on ben Azzai, John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth is discussed in this article as are the consequences for the rise of celibacy in early Christianity.

    Get PDF
Quevedo's writings related to the Bible must be considered within the sociocultural framework of the Counterreformation. The authors focus on the Lágrimas de Hieremías castellanas, a literal translation and commentary of the first chapter of the book of Lamentations. They attempt to evaluate the level of Quevedo's knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and the arguments he urged on his defence of the Vulgate. After a detailed analysis of Quevedo's book and the study of the most significant cases, the authors draw the following conclusions: a) Quevedo followed the Ferrara Bible in his literal translation but not in his commentary; b) Quevedo had sufficient knowledge of Hebrew as to evaluate the meaning of the original text, compared with the ancient versions and the current commentaries; c) Quevedo defended the Vulgate by means of disciplinary reasoning rather than by philological arguments. In his treatise on the Lágrimas Quevedo shows again his paradoxical character: he literally followed the Ferrara Bible, and he even resorted occasionally to the Talmud and other Jewish sources; at the same time, he defended at any cost the Vulgate, in accordance with the norm and spirit of the Counterreformation.
