Moshe Almosnino and Yosef Nasi did not only share a common political and social context, namely Salónica, Constantinople in the 16th century. They also devoted their time and effort to help the Sephardic people of the Diaspora to which they both belonged. One can say that their work got rewarded as the premonitory dream was fulfilled.

    Get PDF
According to the author of this article, there is no objective evidence that supports the theory of the Arian pro-Judaism, a theory that has become a myth in the course of time. Neither the Arian emperor nor the king favoured Judaism. The association of Arianism with the Jewish religion developed out of the anti-Arian polemics of the Catholic authors of the 4th and 5th centuries. The falsehood of this myth is confirmed by the existence of an anti-Jewish controversy reflected in the Arian literature that has been preserved.

Traces of a Non-Masoretic Text in the Antiochene Revision

    Get PDF
The problems concerning the correspondence between Greek and Masoretic texts must be considered within the scope of a Hebrew textual pluralism, that could be able to explain large displacements and many of Greek doublets. The author presents and analyses two fragments of the Antiochene text of the first book of Kings as a sample of the lacking in correspondence with Masoretic text. As in coincident sections Greek is strongly literal, it seems that the Greek translation of these books tended to be faithful to the original, therefore the discrepancies of quite a great extent, as those presented here, show that the underlying Hebrew text held considerable differences from Masoretic.

On One Masorah in Rashi's Biblical Commentary

The aim of our research was to clarify the Masoretic sources which Rashi used in his commentary on the word נחלה in Ezek. 47:19. Rashi claims that he has see that the stress is penultimate for גחלה מצרים (Num. 34:5) and that the Masorah ad loc is לית בטעמא (= unique with this accentuation). I examined scores of medieval Biblical manuscripts that originated from all known regions but did not find a single Masoretic note formulated in this way. Moreover, they all apply the ב (= two occurrences) in different wording, without the use of לית as Rashi does. In only one manuscript, Parma di Rossi 2, did I find the note ל פס דס וחד נתלה עבר על נפשנו (the word-pair מצרים נחלה is unique in the Bible as is נחלה עבר על נפשנו). I suggest viewing this note and the other one quoted by Rashi לית בטעמא as a rewording by the Masoretes of the equivalent note found in the Aleppo and Leningrad Manuscripts: בתרי לישני ב (= a unique pair of words identical in pronunciation but different in meaning).El propósito de nuestra investigación ha sido dilucidar cuáles fueron las fuentes masoréticas que Rashi empleó en su comentario a la palabra נחלה en Ezek. 47:19.

In this paper the author analyses the image of the Messiah as depicted by the Jewish- Hellenistic historians Philo of Alexandria and Flavius Josephus. Philo's image is basically of an eschatological nature clearly sharing Hellenistic philosophical concepts. In the works of Josephus, however, several types can be distinguished, having all in common the human nature of the Messiah and his influence on historical events.

Preliminary study and transcription of the surviving fragments of an expenditures' register of the Jewish community of Tarazona (1406-1407). The forty-two entries written in Aragonese aljamía deal with payments implemented by communal officers on different issues: fiscal disbursements, communal defence expenses and public debt, trial and execution of an informer, religious expenses (maintenance of buildings and charity institutions, officers' salaries, and payment of the Sukkot arba‘ah minim). Especially relevant are the references to dependence relations regarding the Saragossa Jewish community.

    Get PDF
The two Neo-Sumerian texts from the British Museum published here have to be added to the dossier of Ur-Bau, a moneylender of unknown origin. In the first tablet a certain Šeškalla receives silver for one-month harvest work as well as barley on loan. In the second text, the same Šeškalla receives from Ur-Bau an amount of barley, in this case probably also on loan, at the unusually high value of 210 sìla for 1 shekel of silver, the usual value being 300 sìla for 1 shekel.
