The beginnings of the Judeo-Spanish lyric in the Iberian Peninsula have so far remained om the dark due to the lack of tangible documentation. On the basis of two manuscript collections of Hebrew sacred songs (piyutim) from the Bodleian Library in Oxford, it is possible to illuminate some of the formative processes of the Sephardic lyric song prior to the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal. Careful readings of the first verses of poems in Castilian and Catalan appearing in these manuscripts as melodic codes for the singing of piyutim show some aspects of the lyric repertoire in romance languages known by Jewish poets and singers before 1492.Por falta de documentación, los comienzos de la lírica judeoespañola en la Península siempre han quedado en la oscuridad.
David's Dying Directives according to Josephus
1 Kgs 2,1-9, «the testament of David», records the king's final instructions to his son Solomon. This article offers a detailed study of Josephus' version (Ant. 7.383- 388) of the testament in relation to its biblical source. The study focusses particularly on the textual affinities of Josephus' presentation, given the differences among the various ancient versions (MT, LXX, Targum) of the testament. The article likewise examines the range of re-writing techniques utilized by Josephus in Ant. 7.383-388 and their contribution in generating a distinctive rendition of David's testament.1 Re 2,1-9, «el testamento de David», recoge las últimas instrucciones del rey para su hijo Salomón.
In this article the author identifies and examines all the examples of Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael in which the hermeneutical technique ’ên kĕṯîḇ kaʼn ’êl·la’ is applied. This analysis will enable us to establish its specific use in the midrash. All the examples can be splited in two groups according to the element commented: 1) textual problem or detail and, 2) words or expresions without any problems in their context. The function of this technique is also different in each group: it has a textual function in the first group and an exegetical one in the second.
The present article deals with the life of Jehuda Alitienz in the aljama of Huesca and his murder at the hands of a Christian. The reason for his tragic death is presumably to be sought in the non-fulfillment of a business agreement he had concluded with Sancho López. Other circumstances, however, may have played their part as well such as Rabbi Juce Papur's unfriendliness and the victim's tricky relations with some members of his own family. In studying this case we hope to throw some light on the life and the problems that could arise in an aljama as well as on the local judicial system, especially in the area of crime.
The typical image of Spain created after 1492 would be kept by the modernising Ottoman Sephardic Jews on the eve of the 20th century, as shown by new literary genres such as journalism. Indeed, in newspapers dealing with historical and cultural aspects of contemporary Spain, the Sephardim seem unable to tranform the old stereotypes, fearing the consequences this change could have in the perception of their own identity. A series of articles about the «disaster of '98» published in the Salonican newspaper El Avenir, are an example of this situation.
Ms. Or. Gaster 10688 is a Spanish translation in Hebrew script of Judah Abarbanel or Leone Ebreo's Dialoghi d'amore kept in the British Library in London. By putting it in context with the other extant sixteenth-century translations of the work and the Italian manuscript tradition, the author suggests that ms. Or. Gaster 10688 is a translation from an Italian edition, thus disagreeing with the opinion that it is an original work. Indeed, the text corresponds with the first printed Spanish version published in Venice in 1568. The author also puts the manuscript in context with the literary production of the Sephardic communities in the Levant during the 16th century. Or.
The present article deals with a Sephardic copla recently found, namely The Jews at the Sinai. Its publication as well as the whole edition in which it is included (Thessalonik, 1786) justify a re-evaluation and a new partial study of the extant corpus of ten Shabuoth coplas. The study presents a description of the publication, discusses the authorship of the text, and provides a critical edition of the copla, including a commentary of the Biblical and Rabbinic sources on which it is based, and a metrical and linguistic analysis.
