The present paper deals with the Iberian context of the production-translation of a text in Portuguese language about Shabbatai Zevi, in 1666. We refer the production of similar texts and the information about the adherents in Spain, mostly in Malaga. We reflect on the various messsianic currents that crossed the different social groups in Portugal. We present a text that proves the spreading of news about Shabbatai in Portuguese Lands, and the interest kindled among the Portuguese Conversos. And we place the hypothesis that this text to the movement of Shabbatai, could have different readings, among them one that could be convenient to the conversos.

The journey home to Nineveh by Tobiah recalls Odysseus’ novstoı to Ithaca, a journey marked by dangers and adventures and by the ideas of love and the family. The biblical book stands as a historical-religious novel although the origin is to be sought in the literary genre of folktalle enriched with didactic, edifying, and prophetic elements. This elementary narrative structure could go back to the Odyssey – archetype of the modern novel – and particularly to the folktale of Odysseus. The hagiographer could have thus re-written in theological perspective the ancient story of Tobit and Tobiah from biblical and parabiblical tradition so as to answer the problems of the Israel of his time. The numerous analogies concerning the themes (the journey to the East, the dangers, the family feelings, etc.) and the narrative elements (the relation father-son, the dog,the intermediaries, the drug, etc.) show that the author must have known Odysseus’ novstoı, and also that he relied on his readers’ knowledge of it when he outlined the story of Tobiah following the scheme of the Greek hero’s journey. One should speak of an intelligent attempt to exploit the fame of the Homeric tale in order to confer authoritative status to his story, rather than of literary dependence or emulation. Indeed, the author of the story of Tobiah uses the folktale of Odysseus to revive the hope of the Jewish community to return to their land, just like Tobiah returned to Nineveh from Rages happily married with Sarah.

    Get PDF
According to an opinion voiced by G. Scholem, the messianic movement of Shabbatai Zevi owed much of its success to the attraction that his paradoxical message exerted among Conversos returning to Judaism in the 17th C. With the intention of criticizing this explanation, the author presents and analyzes in this article a recently discovered satyrical pamphlet that was distributed by the anti-Shabbatean party in Amsterdam following the arrival of news concerning Shabbetai’s prison on May 3, 1666. This text shows that some of the more influential and prosperous Jewish communal leaders did not believe in the false Messiah. Confronting the Shabbatean party, these “unbelievers” used tactics of literary deceit similar to those used in their relation to Catholic Spain. Their Iberian Marrano origins did not arouse in them any mystical enthusiam. To the conttrary, they were concerned with keeping the reputation of rationality and trust they had enjoyed in the European world of finances. This controversy includes an ironical reference to the sancttions that the Amsterdam Jewish community imposed on their heretics Uriel da Costa and Baruch Espinoza.

Abraham ibn Ezra’s commentary on the book of Job is clearly influenced by that of Saadia Gaon. In his explanations, Ibn Ezra always quotes Saadia Gaon’s interpretations in order to reject them. However, some of the opinions attributed to “other commentators” by Ibn Ezra are found in Saadia Gaon’s work. Some of Ibn Ezra’s own explanations are similar to those of the gaon, although in these cases, Ibn Ezra does not mention his source. In addition, similarities between the introductions to the commentaries on Job of these two scholars can be found. Saadia Gaon’s exegesis on the book of Job influenced on Ibn Ezra’s style, on his philological and philosophical approaches, and on the structure of his commentary.
