Adolescents in a secondary educational setting are confronted with life-altering decisions. These decisions are primarily regarding their future and how they will succeed post-graduation. As counselors are aware, students deal with environmental factors that positively or negatively impact their mental health on a daily basis. We can prepare adolescents for challenges they may face by introducing coping mechanisms and stress-reduction strategies
Education Through The Outdoors
Stepping into the real-life application of being an educator, this internship with Claytor Nature Center opened my eyes to the many opportunities of environmental education. Through the five months spent as an intern, I improved upon my lesson plan writing, communication with educators, and created fun and objective filled field trips. This opportunity was a great experience and prepared me for a future full time job in this field
Overcoming Barriers to Receiving Liver Transplants due to Alcoholism
Investigating liver disease and the need for a transplant in alcoholics is important due to the high need in the United States of America. Almost 50% of all people on the liver transplant list are due to alcohol, however there is still a much higher need, as many people are denied due to their addiction. This literature review is going to look at these barriers in alcoholism and in the healthcare system that keep these people from getting the full help that they need. Alcoholism is very negatively stigmatized, and therefore, there is little knowledge and public outreach in regards to this topic, so this population is ignored, as many people believe that they did it to themselves so they should have to live with the consequences. In order to draw conclusions, research will be conducted on what the liver transplant requirements are and if they are consistent throughout the country, the success rate of liver transplants in alcoholics and if they continue to drink after their procedure, and what hospitals are doing, if anything, to help these patients get on the transplant list. Further research will also be conducted in regards to what other countries may be doing for this population that is helpful and if alcoholics and people with other substance abuse disorders face the barriers to care in kidney transplants. Through analysis, a solution will be created that can help these patients in overcoming the barriers to getting the help they need, and this will be able to provide helpful information to these people, when there is nothing readily available. This review of literature will investigate the barriers that reduce this population\u27s access to care and propose interventions that can combat this issue
The Effect of Nurse Staffing on Patients Perceived Care
In discharged patients, how do fully staffed units compared with short-staffed units affect patient satisfaction levels during their inpatient experience? From the literature review, it was found that as nurse staffing declined, so did the patient-perceived quality of care and their loyalty to the respective hospitals. Also, as the percentage of assistant nurses to registered nurses increased, the patients reported poor care and decreased nursing guidance. While more research is needed on this prevalent issue, a recommendation of how nurse staffing issues could be changed is to increase nurse staffing visibility, especially in units with poor reported patient outcomes in regards to staffing levels; moreover, this could be done with mandatory rounding by all staff (registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, assistive personnel, etc.) as well as bedside report between shifts
The Potential Effect of a Mutation in the DFR Gene on Brassica rapa Growth and Color
Brassica rapa is a small flowering plant that is often used in classroom experiments due to its small size, low-maintenance growing conditions, and quick life cycle. Several mutant lines have been bred and briefly described, although not much is known about the actual genetic changes and therefore all the downstream effects of that mutation. Nine different mutant lines of Brassica rapa were grown to more carefully identify the phenotypes affected by the mutations. Wild type and Purple Stem Hairy B. rapa were grown over 5 weeks and Red-Green-Blue (RGB) hex scores for color and height were measured.The results shows that there`s no statistical difference between the heights of wild type and the mutant plants. Regarding the color intensity scores, there is no statistical difference between the red and green colors between wild type and mutant plants,but mutant plants were significantly bluer than the control plants, making them more purple
