Antimicrobial activity and Quality Control Parameters of Talicati Vatakam - A Classical Siddha Drug
Tāḷicāti vaṭakam (TSV), a polyherbal siddha drug was chosen, it was screened for antimicrobial study and also subjected to standardization parameters. The ingredients were procured, authenticated and prepared the drug as per standard operating procedure. The ethanolic extract of TSV was screened for nine bacteria and two fungi. Then the drug was investigated for the phytochemical profile, physicochemical parameters, thin layer chromatographic photo documentation (TLC), high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) finger print profile. Antimicrobial assay revealed inhibitory activity against all test pathogens. TLC under UV showed 8 bands at short wavelength, 13 bands at long wavelength; 8 bands showed post derivatization with vanillin Sulphuric acid reagent. The present investigation concluded that the siddha herbal preparation of TSV have great potential on antimicrobial against pathogens. This siddha formulation can be used to prevent the bacterial and fungal infections and the standards could be used for quality control of the drug
Evaluation of Heavy Metals and Microbial Contamination of Selected Herbal Churna Marketed Formulations
Herbal formulations are popular in India and across the world due to their medicinal properties. Churna is powdered formulations that are consumed widely due to their low cost and ease of administration. Brahmi Churna, Satavari Churna, and Jethimadh churna of 3 different brand manufacturers were procured from the local market. The main objective of the study is the determination of heavy metals and microbiological evaluation as per Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy was performed for the detection of heavy metals. Microbial evaluation was done as per Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia. The heavy metal content of 7 out of 9 samples complies with the test for heavy metals. Two samples of Shatavari Churna were above the permissible limit of Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia. The microbial study showed all samples within the allowable limits of Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia. Brahmi Churna and Jethimadh Churna were found to be safe for human consumption. Quality checks of Shatavari churna should be performed to ensure the heavy metals are within the permissible limit
Evaluation of the Antimicrobial efficacy of a novel polyherbal extract against Streptococcus Mutans: An in-vitro study
Aim: The present study was done to assess the antibacterial efficacy of a polyherbal extract against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) in-vitro. Materials and methods: In the current study, the ethanolic extracts of Haritaki, Bhibitak, Amalaki, Yashtimadhu, Haridra and Vacha were subjected to microbiological assay. The microbial growth inhibitory potential of the polyherbal extract was determined by using the agar disc diffusion method. Results: Mean zone of inhibition of polyherbal extract mix against S. mutans at 48 hours was 24mm. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration of polyherbal extract mix on S. mutans was 0.1gm/mL and 0.2gm mg/mL respectively. Conclusion: The polyherbal extract had antimicrobial efficacy against streptococcus mutans. This polyherbal extract could have potential clinical implications. Clinical significance: as many chemical agents used for prevention of dental caries might have long term adverse effects, use of plant based products could be an excellent treatment alternative. This polyherbal extract possesses antibacterial properties against streptococcus mutans and hence could be used for prevention of dental caries. The herbs used in the study are easily available, economically feasible and are being used since time immemorial.
Comparative HPTLC fingerprint profile of three types of Kodiveli used in Siddha
Kodiveli is an important Siddha drug used in the formulations such as Kodiveli Podi, Kodiveli Ennai, Kodiveli Thylam, Chithramoola Kuligai and Kodiveli Kudineer. The HPTLC is a simple method to differentiate closely related species. HPTLC profiling of ethanolic extracts of roots of three species of Plumbago (Plumbago zeylanica L. (Venkodiveli), P.indica L., (Senkodiveli) and P. auriculata Lam. (Karunkodiveli)) has been carried out using Toluene: Ethyl acetate: Methanol (5:1.5:0.1) as solvent system on Silica gel 60 F254-coated aluminium sheets. The preliminary qualitative phytochemical screening found the same combination of phytoconstituents while the HPTLC finger prints have given more refined picture in respect of the number of compounds present and plumbagin concentration among the three selected species of Plumbago. The chromatogram peak at Rf. 0.76 found common and indicating highest concentration in all the three species and it may be of the bioactive compound plumbagin. The number of peaks and their attributes were found to be different among the roots of the selected species. This result will be highly useful for the precise identification and discrimination of the authentic root materials of P. zeylanica, P. Indica and P. Auriculata from substitutes and adulterants used in the raw drug market
Availability and yielding of natural camphor (Karpura) from Cinnamomum camphora Nees & Eberm
Karpura (natural camphor) has been mentioned since the Vedic era in various formulations for therapeutic and spiritual reasons. But from the late 19th century onwards, synthetic camphor replaced it due to its high price and unavailability of its plant material. This synthetic camphor is very low-priced as compared to a natural one. The cost-effective and unawareness about it’s side effects lead to escalating the use of synthetic camphor. Formulations mentioned in Ayurveda are with natural camphor not with synthetic. But there is no proper method described for yielding of natural camphor from Cinnamomum camphora Nees & Eberm. plant. This is an effort to know the extraction of natural camphor from wood and leaves of Cinnamomum camphora Nees & Eberm. In the present study Clevenger apparatus was used to evaluate its yielding proportion. The yielding percentage of Karpura depends on the quality, quantity, part used and maturity of plant material. Moreover, the selection of proper apparatus and procedures is also vital for the quantitative extraction of Karpura. Though having a high price, it has a unique remedial activity which is entirely different from the synthetic one that is available in the market on the trade name of Karpura.
Simultaneous estimation of epigallocatechin, fisetin, and quercetin in Acacia suma and its potential against postprandial hyperglycemia
Anti-diabetic activity of the plants may follow one or the other mechanism such as their ability to restore the pancreatic tissue function or increase in insulin output or inhibiting the intestinal absorption of glucose or inhibiting the pancreatic enzymes like alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase, etc. The alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibition assays were performed to analyze the anti-diabetic potential of Acacia suma. RP-HPLC method was developed and validated for simultaneous estimation of Epigallocatechin (EGC), Fisetin (FT), and Quercetin (QT) in hydroalcoholic extract (HAE) of Acacia suma and formulations. The simultaneous estimation was performed using the Luna C18 column with 20µl sample injection volume. Whereas, acetonitrile and phosphate buffer (0.1%, 30:70 v/v, pH 2.7) was used for resolution as mobile phase with column temperature 40 OC and flow rate 1 ml/min. The IC50 for alpha-amylase inhibition and alpha-glucosidase inhibition activity was found to be 12.5µg/ml and 93.79µg/ml respectively was compared with standards. The developed method was found simple, specific, precise and linear with regression coefficient (R2 = 0.999) over the selected range of concentration (2.5-160 μg/mL) having detection limits 0.076, 0.012, 0.010 μg/mL and quantification limits 0.231, 0.038, 0.031 μg/mL for EGC, FT and QT respectively. In-vitro alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibition assay support the traditional claim of the plant in the treatment of metabolic disorders. The established RP-HPLC method demonstrates the precise and easy determination of EGC, FT, and QT and is effectively studied by a gradient elution system
A case study on the management of Kitibha kushta (Psoriasis) with virechana, dhanyamla dhara and takra dhara
All the skin diseases in Ayurveda have been discussed under the broad heading of “Kushta”. Kushta Roga a dermatological disorders including psoriasis described as one of the most chronic disorders which is recurrent and immune mediated skin condition. It can have negative impact on physical, emotional and psychosocial status of affected person. Prevalence rate shows that it affects 1-2% of worldwide population in both the genders. This disease characterised by scaling, thickened-rough skin lesions, itching, in severe cases covers entire body. Kitibha Kushta is included in Kshudra Kushta commonly found today, having sign and symptoms similar to Plaque psoriasis. In this case study, a 49 years old male with chief complaint of Kandu (Itching), Powdery discharge and dry blackish brown patches over the anterior and posterior side of both legs, abdomen and upper back treated with Shodhana Chikitsa using Virechana Karma, along with Sarvanga Dhara (Dhanyamala Dhara), Shirodhara (Takra dhara) and Samshamana Aushadhis (Oral medicines) for 24 days. Patient recovered from the symptoms by undergoing above said treatment and there is improvement in the quality of life of the patient
The Effect of Yoga module on Hypertensive Pregnant Woman - A Pilot study
Background: Yoga is an ancient science of life which provide holistic approach to the health. Its analytical approach is depending on the signs and symptoms present in the patients. As Pregnancy induced hypertension is the instrumental disease, there is no direct reference of it in Ayurveda and yoga. But there are many references in ancient texts about hemodynamic system including Hridaya, Dhamani, Shira etc which are commonly affected by the high blood pressure. Aim and objective: To assess the role of specific Yoga module in the management of gestational hypertension. Materials and Methods: For the present study total 15 patients were selected and Yoga module was advised to the diagnosed hypertensive pregnant woman for 5 days a week for 8 weeks and assessment was done after completion of Yoga module. Results: In pregnant women, after applying t test, statistically highly significant result P>0.001 were found in Systolic, Diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate after Yoga Module therapy. Conclusion: Yoga helps to improve physical, mental, and spiritual health. Yoga improves the cardiovascular system, immune system, and quality and length of sleep. Yoga regulates five types of Vata which helps to maintains circulation and metabolism in body, by reliving stress yogic procedure reduce the systolic and diastolic BP.
Antihyperglycemic effects of Amrtottara Kvatha, an Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by suppressing oxidative stress
Amrtottara Kvatha [KNM3] (AK) is a widely used Ayurvedic preparation, primarily utilized for hyperpyrexia (‘Jwara’). In the present study we evaluated the antidiabetic effect of AK against streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic murine model. The effects of AK on normoglycemic rats and glucose tolerance were also studied. The antidiabetic effect of AK was evaluated in streptozotocin (STZ, 55 mg/kg, i.p.) induced diabetic rats. AK was administered orally at four doses AK (1/4), AK (1/2), AK (T) and AK (DD) for fourteen days to examine the antidiabetic activity with glibenclamide (5 mg/kg) as reference standard. The effect of AK on blood glucose and insulin levels, biochemical parameters, oxidative stress biomarkers and histopathological examinations were studied. Oral administration of AK at doses AK (1/4), AK (1/2), AK (T) and AK (DD) to rats with streptozotocin induced diabetes showed significant (P<0.01) decrease in blood glucose levels with improved insulin levels, liver glycogen and pancreatic protein content. The oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde and advanced oxidation protein products) were reduced in all AK treated groups with a significant (P<0.01) increase in antioxidant enzyme status. Histopathological studies also supported the findings. The present study reports for the first time the antidiabetic effects of Amrtottara Kvatha by suppressing oxidative stress induced by streptozotocin in Wistar rats.
Study of combined effect of Khadirashtak kwath and Lodhradi lep on Mukhdushika (Acne Vulgaris) – A pilot study
Introduction: Skin is one of the five Gyanendriyas (Sense organ) as described in Ayurvedic texts. It is responsible for Sparshdyanam, hence plays important role in Physical and Mental well being. It plays the most important role by interfacing with surrounding. On contrary with this there is increased pollution, stress, change in diet, change in life style causing the most burning skin problem i.e. Mukhdushika so called Acne Vulgaris. In modern science most of the drug which are used have side effect and complications on long term used, so Ayurveda is an best option to treat the diseases. Lodhradilep mentioned in Samhita can be used for external application and Khadirashtak kwath can be used for internal application. It can be used as alternate therapy which is devote of complication and side effect. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of Lodhradi lep and Khadirashtak kwath on Mukhdushika. Objectives: To study the effect of Lodhradi lep and Khadirashtak kwath on Mukhdushika. Methodology: Ten patients of Mukhdushika (acne) were enrolled into this pilot study. All patients were evaluated on the basis number of Pidikas (acne), Area Occupied, Kandu (itching), Srava (secretions), Vedana (pain). After 28 days of administration of Lodhradilep and Khadirashtak Kwath twice in a day after meal; result was analysed by paired t test. Results and conclusions: The result in all symptoms i.e. number of Pidikas (acne) (P = <0.001), Area Occupied(P = 0.001), Kandu (itching) (P = <0.001), Srava (secretions) (P = <0.001), Vedana (pain) (P = <0.001)) was found statistically significant. Thus Lodhradi lep and Khadirashtak Kwath on Mukhdushika is an effective combination for management for Mukhdushika.
