Relation of spice consumption with COVID-19 first wave statistics (infection, recovery and mortality) across India
Background & Objectives: The recovery and mortality statistics for COVID-19 first wave considerably differed in different states & Union territories (UT) of India. Spices are an essential part of Indian cuisine. Apart from adding flavors and colors to the food, their importance is traditionally known in disease prevention and cure. Thus, present study was carried out to assess relation of spice consumption with COVID-19 first wave statistics in India. Methods: The spice consumption data of ginger, garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, black pepper, chili, tamarind and ‘other spices’ were retrieved from ‘Household Consumption of Various Goods and Services in India’ from 68th round (2011-12) of survey conducted by National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO). The first wave data for individual states and UTs were retrieved as total number of cases, number of cured/discharged/migrated cases and total number of deaths, in a cumulative normalized form. The correlation of these was analyzed. Results and Conclusions: Spices were consumed across India with a varied range. The highest consumed spice was ginger. The highest consumption of ‘Other spices’ were observed in Lakshadweep (149 gm/30 days), which incidentally reported zero cases. Tamarind had positive correlation (r = 0.4724) with total number of cases and recovered/migrated/cured cases (r = 0.4948). Cumin consumption exhibited weak positive correlation (r = 0.5011) with total deaths per million population. However, most of these correlations were statistically insignificant. These findings can help to predict preventive/ mitigating or curative usage of these spices. The unspecified and under-explored ‘Other spices’ category showed promising correlation
Comparative study on qualitative and quantitative analysis of Inji Charu (Ginger Juice) and Inji Surasam (Ginger Decantent) prepared as per The Siddha literature
Therapeutic aspects of Siddha consist of herbal or poly herbal, mineral, metal and animal products which given specific vehicle. Some of the herbal drugs which are used as vehicle may be processed before administration. Among these the Inji Charu (Ginger Juice) (Zinger officinale Roscoe) is commonly used as Anupanam (vehicle). Inji Charu has more volatile oils which produce pungent effect, so the process of Inji surasam (Ginger Decantent) will reduce the concentration of volatile oils and mitigate the pungent effect. Objective of the study is comparing the chemical constitution of Inji surasam and Inji Charu was analyzed by HPTLC and FTIR. The study result, Concentration of the major chemical compounds was quality wise same and quantity wise differ in both sample found. Alkyl aryl ether, Anhydride functional group were only present in Inji charu and Alkyne Nitro, Sulfonate, Sulfonic Acid, Sulfoxide, Sulfonamide functional group were only present in Inji Surasam.
Pilot study on efficacy of Sarjarasa malahara local application in Parikartika with special reference to Fissure-in-ano
Parikartika i.e. Fissure-in-ano is the most common disease amongst anorectal disorders characterized by severe cutting pain in anal region. Modern treatment includes local application of soothing ointments, oral analgesics and stool softeners in initial condition. Surgical management includes Lord’s dilatation, fissurectomy and lateral Sphincterotomy. But it may lead to complications like bowel incontinence and recurrence. So it is a need of hour to find an alternative and better treatment option. While managing Parikartika, two important things should be taken into consideration- to reduce pain at anal region and to heal the fissure. Keeping these aspects in mind, a pilot study was conducted using local application of Sarjarasa Malahara in the treatment of Parikartika. Methodology: Total 15 patients diagnosed as Parikartika were selected for this study. Sarjarasa Malahara was applied locally in fissure bed twice a day after sitz bath for 28 days. Result: Very encouraging result of local application of Sarjarasa Malahara was noted. Pain, bleeding, itching at anal region and spasm were significantly reduced. Considering overall effect out of 15 patients 13 patients of Parikartika were completely cured i.e. 87% (P=0.0003) and 2 patients were markedly improved i.e. 13% (P=0.0231) at the end of 28days.Conclusion: Considering all above properties of individual drugs, observations and results it can be said that Sarjarasa Malahara is effectively useful in reducing pain, inflammation, itching, spasm and bleeding per rectum and healing of fissure at anal region. Hence, it can be concluded that Sarjarasa Malahara is useful in the treatment of Parikartika
Effective Management of Non-alcoholic Fatty liver disease with Siravedha - A Case Report
Background: Nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a form of Simple fatty liver whose progression leads to adverse circumstances, e.g., metabolic dysfunction. Sushruta said that the Sira Vedha at Dakshin Kurpara Sandhi as a therapy for Yakrit Vikara Modern science also supports on the same page that phlebotomy treatment for some liver diseases. Aim & Objectives: To study the efficacy of Siravedha in the management of Nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease. Material & Methods: Single case study of 44 years old female patient suffering from complaints such as nausea, loss of appetite, distended abdomen, weight gain, constipation for 10 Months. Diagnosed NAFLD patient by USG had severe insensitivity towards allopathic medicines. After a thorough examination of the patient based on Ayurvedic fundamentals, three sittings of Siravedha (65 ml Bloodletting) from the Dakshin Kurpar Sandhi (Rt.Cubital fossa) were done at the interval of 15 days and followed was taken after one month. Result & Observations: U.S.G. Abdomen done after one month showed encouraging results and improvement in the liver grade. The liver showed normal shape and Echotexture. Moreover, clinical features, also resolved completely. Discussion: Siravedha may decrease liver enzymes, oxidative stress, and necrosis, reducing apoptosis and improving liver cells\u27 health. Conclusion: This case report is helpful to plan further clinical studies in a large sample size by showing the efficacy of Siravedha in the management of Nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease without causing any undue event. This case study also reaffirms the classical reference of the specific site of Raktamokshana in a specific clinical condition
Quality assessment of Nimbadi Arka prepared by different methods
Arka kalpana is the unique formulation mentioned in Arka Prakasha. Nimbadi Arka is mentioned in Talurogaadhikara as Taluroganashaka Arka. Its ingredients are Nimba (Azadiracta indica A.Juss), Vacha(Acorus calamus L), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata L), Paatha (Cissampelos pareira Linn), Ativisha (Aconitum heterophylum Wall.ex.Royle) and Katurohini (Picrorhiza kurroa Royle ex Benth). Aims and objectives: To assess the quality and fix the standard method of preparation of Nimbadi Arka. Materials and Methods: In this study, the Arka is prepared according to the method described in the Ayurveda Formulary of India, Sharangadhara Samhita, Arka Prakasha, Text Books of Bhaishajya kalpana, Ayurveda sara samgraha and Ayurveda Pharmacopoeia of India. The Nimbadi Arka is prepared by 4 different methods. To assess the quality of the Arka, a physiochemical analysis is done. Result: From the Arka prepared by four different methods, the high-quality Arka obtained is the one manufactured according to the method described in the Ayurvedic Formulary of India (AFI)
Development and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Durva Nishadi Ointment: In-vitro Study
Background: Synthetic antimicrobials are often associated with adverse effects as a result, there is need for the use of alternate herbal medicines is increasing with their easy availability, safety, cost effectiveness and therapeutic potentiality. In this present study Durva Nishadi Ointment was developed from Durva nishadi Yoga described in Ayurvedic classics as a Lepa (topical application) against microbial diseases like Kandu (Pruritis), Pama (Scabies), Dadru (Tinea/ Ringworm infection), Sheetapitta (Urticarial rashes) and Krimi (Microbial infections).
Result: The developed Durva Nishadi ointment has highly significant antifungal activity than the antibacterial activity. Antifungal activity of 20% ointment against Candida albicans was 28mm of zone of inhibition at 25 μg/ ml, and for Aspergillus niger 15 mm of zone of inhibition at 5 μg/ ml, which are highly comparable with the synthetic standard drug used for the antifungal activity i.e. Fluconazole.

A study on the role of matravasti in Hirschsprung disease in children
Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), or congenital intestinal aganglionosis, is a birth defect characterized by the complete absence of neuronal ganglion cells from a portion of the intestinal tract. Symptoms include constipation, bloating of the belly, and loss of energy and appetite. Diagnosis of the disease includes an abdominal x-ray which shows a bulge in the large intestine caused by stool, barium enema, anorectal manometry, or biopsy of the rectum. In Ayurveda, congenital diseases come under janmabala pravritta vyadhi. It leads to vitiation of the rasavaha, annavaha and malavaha srothas of the fetus, later leading to dusti of vata in pakwashaya and guda. The treatment involves normalization of Vata in the body using a protocol that pacifies the Vata, including Vasti. Considering the age of the patient, Matravasti was done using Sukumaraerandam and a few internal medicines for the mother. It consists of drugs that pacify Vata as well as those which improve digestion.
Effect of Calendula officinalis Linn in Oral health- A Review
Calendula officinalis L., a member of the Asteraceae family, is often known as English Marigold or Pot Marigold. Marigold is an annual or perennial herb traditionally used to treat wounds, ulcers, herpes, scars, skin damage, frostbite, and blood purification. It is mainly used to treat disorders as an anti-diabetic, anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activity because of its numerous biological properties. This plant has a high concentration of medicinally active substances such as carotenoids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids and sterols, quinines, volatile oil, and amino acids. The plant extract, as well as the pure compound derived from it, has been shown to have a variety of pharmacological properties, including anti-cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, and spasmolytic effects, among others. It is used to treat oral mucositis, angular cheilitis, periodontal bone loss, leukoplakia and also used as a root canal irrigant, intracanal medicament, and anti-plaque agent in dentistry. It also helps to heal and manage microbial plaque in gingivitis and periodontitis, boosting immunity. The most significant obstacle and concern is the lack of knowledge regarding the effects of C.officinalis on oral tissues, their mechanisms of action, and their adverse effects. Hence, this review has explored the various medicinal properties of C.officinalis useful in the multiple fields of dentistry
A case study on Ayurvedic management of Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura w.s.r to Tiryaka Raktapitta
Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura is an autoimmune disorder which is characterized by destruction and decrease in the number of platelets count due to the presence of autoantibodies directed against platelet. There are two types of Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura i.e. acute and chronic forms which are characterized by mucocutaneous bleeding such as oral mucosa, heavy menstrual bleeding or gastrointestinal bleeding and low platelet count with normal peripheral blood cells and smear. Clinical features of ITP are ecchymosis and petechiae or thrombocytopenia incidentally found on a routine CBC. Bleeding disorders are explained in classics under the heading of Raktapitta. ITP can be correlated with Tiryaka Raktapitta as in this disorder. It is tridoshaja vayadhi and its manifestation will be subcutaneous bleeding. In this study, a 45 years old female patient had complaints of bleeding from gums and heavy menstrual bleeding for 4 years was treated with Guduchi Kwatha and Aamlaki churna, Shatavari churna, Vata churna, Nimba Arka, fresh Papaya patra swarasa for 6 months. Significant improvement was observed in patient condition and blood reports and platelet count is stable without any allopathic medications.
Synthesis of Nisha-Amalaki Yoga (NAY) Using Special Ayurveda Pharmaceutical Technique: Bhavana (Levigation/Wet Milling)
Bhavana (Levigation) is a pharmaceutical process, which is preferably useful to nullify the unwanted effects of drugs and to potentiate the drug action by transforming the physical and chemical changes. In this process herbal powders are triturated along with herbal juice, decoction, or any organic liquid media till complete absorption of liquid with trituration process. This article is going to throw light on potentiation, synergistic action, increase in shelf life, and dose reduction of Nisha-Amalaki Yoga. In pharmaceutical process of Nisha-Amalaki Yoga,3 Bhavana of Emblica officinalis Gaertn. fruit juice was given to the powder of Curcuma longa L., until complete absorption of juice and dried under sunlight. Due to wet milling techniques, beneficial physicochemcal parameters changed in finished product. Weight of Choorna increased in successive manner indicating accumulation of solid particles of Emblica officinalis Gaertn. juice in Curcuma longa L. powder. Various organoleptic changes such as change of taste, change of color are also noticed. Continuous wet trituration with pressure reduced the particle size (60 to 85 mesh size) and made it compatible. GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis revealed the presence of the major compounds such as1,1-Difluoro-Tetramethylcyclopropane (1.52%), AR-Tumerone (35.11%), 7- Curlone (55.30%) and Iso-aromadendrene epoxide/Iso-pinocarveol (8.07%).
