    An experimental study of efficacy of Shala patra churna in contact poisoning due to Bhallataka taila in albino mice

    Bhallataka (Semicarpus Anacaardium Linn. Anacardiaceae) is mentioned as a poisonous medical plant under drug and cosmetic act 1940. Local application of Bhallataka is more common as many people use Bhallataka as home remedy for relieving pain. Bhallataka oil is used commercially in industry for preparation of dyes etc. So, exposure to oil and contact poisoning of Bhallataka is quite common in India. According to Yogaratnakara, Shala Patra Churna, internally & externally application on the whole body immediately relieves the poisonous effect of Bhallataka. Aim: To study efficacy of Shala Patra Churna in contact poisoning due to Bhallataka Taila in Albino mice. Objective: To study antitoxic properties of Shala Patra Churna in contact poisoning due to Bhallataka Taila. Material and methods: Preparation, authentication, and standardization of Bhallatak Tail and Shala Patra Churna. 3 groups were made each of 6 mice. After application procedure, all mice were observed for 24 hours for any signs. Rating of skin reaction was evaluated as per the Indian Standard BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards )1992. Test sample and standard drug applied for 7 consecutive days. Observation and results: Observation done in 3 groups of animals for the duration of 7 days study. All the necessary precautions were taken to carry out each step during study. Conclusion: Effect of local application of Shala patra churna is equivalent to the standard drug (silver nitrate gel). Therefore, Shala plant can be significantly used for the treatment of Bhallataka induced contact poison.

    Anti-obesity effect of peel of Opuntia joconostle Web in high-fat-diet-induced obesity C57BL/6J mice

    Obesity is directly associate to cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension  producing severe complication of  health and economic costs  in  a global scale. This study aims to validate the anti-obesity potential of the peel of Opuntia joconostle hydroethanolic extract  (XOCO) on obesity in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese C57BL/6 mice. Therefore, the phenolic compounds and flavonoids  profiles were investigated by colorimetric assay. We are using a HFD  induced obesity in mice and after orally administered 200, 300 and  mg/kg XOC for 5 weeks. At the end of the experimental period was determined body weight, food intake, serum biochemical parameters,  fat weight, organ and a histological analysis.  This research demonstrated that the peel of the investigated  xoconostle had a significantly amount of flavonoids, showing  highest level of total phenolic compound  (58.15 mg GAE/g  of extract) and flavonoid content (59.12 mg CE/g of extract). XOC Treatment in HFD-fed mice decreases adipogenesis, total body fat, the absolute body weight, lipidemia, glucose levels,  leptin, and resistin, and increases HDL-CHO levels and adiponectin. In histological analysis showed  inhibition of the deposition of fat droplets in the liver. Findings indicated  that XOC  has anti-obesity effects in obesity-induced mice. This potential anti-obesity effect  may be due to phenolic compounds content in the extract

    Ayurvedic management of Polycystic Ovarian Disorder - A case study

    Background: Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is a complex heterogeneous disorder with involvement of endocrinopathies. Ayurveda does not correlate the condition to a single disease or syndrome but the symptoms bears a resemblance to involvement of Vata and Kapha Doshas. Ayurveda treats Poly Cystic Ovarian Disorder by correcting basic disturbances in metabolism, by restoring ovulation naturally by speeding up growth of follicles. The line of treatment for PCOS patient depends on the body constitution of patient, causative factors and symptoms shown. Case report: A 25-years female patient with her husband aged 28 years reported the OPD of Prasuti Tantra evam Streeroga, with the complaints of dysmenorrhoea, scanty menses, delayed menses, acidity, hairfall, and general weakness. Her ultrasonography reports revealed poly cystic like appearance of ovaries. Her menstrual cycle was 2 days/ 45 days, scanty, painful with few clots. Obstetric history was nil. Patient was given Kuberaksha vati, Kalaonji powder, Rasapachak kwatha, Granthiraja powder, and Navayas Churna for 4 months with followup taken every month. Result: After treatment, patients menstrual cycle was set gradually to normal i.e. 28 days. Her interval between menses was reduced. Significant relief was achieved in complaints of dysmenorrhoea and clots. Even her USG findings showed normal appearance of ovaries after treatment. Conclusion: This case supports the importance of personalised medication in management of poly cystic disorder. It also emphasizes the significance of Kuberaksha vati, Kalaonji powder, Rasapachak kwatha, Granthiraja powder, and Navayas Churna in reducing subjective ad objective signs and symptoms of Poly Cystic Ovarian Disorder. Further large scale clinic trial scan be helpful for drawing further conclusions

    Development and Validation of Analytical Method for Estimation of Berberine in Herbal Extract of Momordica Dioica

    Background:While several anti-diabetic medications have been found to lower blood glucose levels, there are numerous negative effects connected with the use of currently marketed anti-diabetic medications.However, there are medicinal plants with anti-diabetic effects with low or no side effects. Among the Cucurbitaceae family of plants, Momordica dioica is a dioecious climbing herb. It contains many phytoconstituents.One of it is a quaternary ammonium salt of benzyl-isoquinoline alkaloid called as berberine exhibiting a wide variety of pharmaceutical properties.In the current investigation, the activities of berberine for its anti-diabetic potential in the Momorica Dioica plant.The goal of the recent effort is to establish and validate an HPTLC method that is quick, accurate, exact, and specific for determining berberine from herbal extract of Momordica dioica. Methodology/Conclusions/significance: For a quick examination to determine the amount of berberine, a (HPTLC) process was created as well as validated.On HPTLC aluminium plate 60 F254,precoated with silica gel  chromatographic separation was accomplished using the solvents: methanol ,ethyl acetate, toluene and formic acid (2:4:3:0.5). A wavelength of 348 nm was used for detection. Rf was found to be 0.44±5% for berberine. There was linearity for berberine in the 400ng/band concentration range.The LOD and LOQ was found to be0.0096ng/band and 0.0293ng/ band for Berberine.The average berberine recovery rate was (0.041).The method\u27s precision, accuracy, linearity, robustness, and specificity were all authenticated in accordance with ICH guidelines. The discovered approach can be used to regularly analyse Berberine in herbal formulations for quality control

    Ayurveda is an ancient science dominantly focuses on healthy living and mindful life in contrary to other medical sciences. Ayurveda specifically uses herbs and herbo-mineral combinations for the treatment. The herbs described in the classics also include some Vishadravya (poisonous plants) as potent medicine. Anything that results in "Vishannatva" (stress) or "Vishada" (sadness) in the body is "Visha" (poisonous material). Depending on the intensity of toxicity, Ayurvedic classics have classified all poisons into two categories: Mahavisha and Upavisha (less potent toxin). Vatsanabha (Aconitum ferox Wall. ex Seringe) is classified under the Sthavara Visha (poison of plant origin) and Mahavisha. It is the only Mahavisha that is still recognised and available. All Vishadravya should be used after some specific Shodhana (purification). While administering Vatsanabha in the form of Ayurvedic medicines, Shodhana (purification) is an effective technique for minimising its hazardous effects. Although it is Vishadravya, the compounds containing Vatsanabha (Aconitum ferox Wall. ex Seringe) are listed in ‘Essential Ayurveda Medication for Ayurvedic dispensaries, operated under centrally supported programmes of the Government of India. This enlistment affirms its significance in other ways. Nearly 17 percentage of the formulations mentioned in RRS have Vatsanabha as their constituent. Modern research has already proven the analgesic, antipyretic, antioxidant, antimicrobial and many other activities of Vatsanabha. Thus, the present review is designed to extensively discuss and understand the safety profile of Vatsanabha and utility in various diseases, along with its probable mode of action

There are several immunomodulatory herbs along with their phytochemicals are present to serve their best. Bioassay is the method of analysis to find out the potency or concentration of any substance when effect on living things. Sars Cov-2 virus and its fatal outbreak is a real threat to modern society. To perform in vitro procedure to screened out small molecule inhibitors of this malicious pseudo typed particle cell entry, Dr. Whittaker\u27s group use this bioassay system like PubChem AID: 1479144, PubChem AID: 1479149, PubChem AID: 1479150 and PubChem AID: 1494158. This in silico study is to show the potency of the phytochemicals of traditional herbs of Unani, as if inhibitors by means of machine learning with the help of WEKA.     Effect of methanolic extract of Ventilago maderaspatana leaves on liver function markers and histopathology of liver tissue in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

    Aim: The liver is particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress brought on by hyperglycemia since it is the main tissue. In order to better understand how Ventilago maderaspatana leaf methanolic extract (MEVML) affects liver function markers and the histology of liver tissue in STZ-induced diabetic rats, this study looked into the hepatoprotective potential of MEVML. Method: A single STZ dose of 50 mg/kg body weight was given to the animals to cause diabetes. All of the experimental groups\u27 serum was tested for levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and urea content. Results: The results revealed a marked increase in the serum levels of urea, ALT, AST, ALP, and GGT activity. The results of MEVML treatment, however, were equivalent to those of glibenclamide treatment in that they led to a decline in the activity of ALT, ALP, AST, GGT, and urea content in the diabetic group of rats. Furthermore, diabetic rats\u27 liver tissue showed considerable histological alterations. However, treatment with Ventilago maderaspatana methanolic leaf extract and glibenclamide considerably reduced these histological alterations. Conclusion: Overall, the findings of our study show that MEVML reduces liver function biomarkers and restores the architecture of hepatic tissue to reduce hepatic tissue damage under diabetes stress conditions

    Alpha amylase inhibitor as an Anti-diabetic potential from medicinal plants: A Review

    Alpha amylases cleave the starch like molecules and led to increase in blood sugar level in diabetic patients then in order to manage it the inhibition action is carried out by their inhibitors. The α-amylase inhibitors catalyses the process of endo-hydrolysis of α (1→ 4) glycosidic linkage present in starch which ultimately led to decrease in the starch hydrolysis process. It also affects the carbohydrate absorption in the intestine. In 1945, the first alpha amylase inhibitor was reported from beans. It has already been isolated from various plant species namely, Hibiscus sabdariffa.L, Geranium pratense L and Cedrus libani A. Rich with inhibition percentage of 100, 43 and 31 respectively. The studies have already been reported on inhibitors and their interactions with human pancreatic alpha amylases are made .In-vitro and in vivo tests has already been done by various researchers which showed a significant drop in blood sugar level of a normoglycemic mice after an extract from the leaves of Bersama abbyssinica was tested for its potential effect as anti-diabetic.

    Documentation of the different approaches of Varman by Varman practitioners in Tamilnadu for Azhalkeel Vaayu (Knee Joint pain)

    Varmam is a unique therapeutic technique discovered by Siddhars. Immediate pain relief is possible by manipulating Varmam points. Various schools of thought exist among Siddha practitioners. This treatment methodology is taught by the Guru Disciple method (Gurukulamkalvi). Each guru had some uniqueness in their treatment methodology. There is no standard compilation and documentation available about these treatment methodologies. Many cases were treated with the complaint of knee joint pain in Varmam OPD, GSMC, Chennai. This study aims to find the differences and similarities between the treatment methodologies practiced by Varmam practitioners and to document the uniqueness of Varmam points for Knee joint pain. Methodology: The study was conducted in three zones of Tamil Nadu. The response rate for this study is 66.67%. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 20 questions which took 20 minutes for the practitioner to fill and the written consent form was obtained from the Varmam practitioners. Result: This study indicates that each Varmam practitioner who trained under different guru-disciple methods had different approaches to treating knee joint pain. Overall 45 different Varmam names were collected from the practitioners. Some of these points share the same anatomical location. Some Varmam point names are more common among many practitioners but their anatomical location varies. Many controversies arise among the Varmam practitioners on locating the Varmam points. Compiling and documenting these points used by Varmam practitioners of different guru-disciple methods will pave way for future studies on standardizing the location of Varmam points

    X-ray Diffraction study for chemical analysis of Rajat based bhasmas

    X-ray diffraction analysis of the Rajat based selected bhasmas was one of the advanced parameter for detailed scientific scrutiny in this study. Ayurvedic literature is enriched with various techniques for establishing dimensions to quality control for achieving standard acceptable form of bhasma. X-ray diffraction is modern and sophisticated method which provides relevant chemical database of the herbo-metallic drugs. Quality of bhasma determines on the basis of chemical composition, processing and applications, so it can be used safely. X-ray diffraction pattern data detects size, physical state and surface properties. For Rajat based selected bhasmas, reduced particle size was observed in this study which will be useful to determine extent of therapeutic effectiveness of particular bhasma as per amount of quantity and quality in each dose. Rajat based selected bhasmas are herbo-mineral complex compounds which are recommended for treatment of several ailments from reputed pharmacies. Systematic pathways for the synthesis of ayurvedic bhasmas from heavy metals include Lead, Iron, Gold, Copper, Zinc, Silver, Mercury and Arsenic. The potential of ayurvedic literature and drugs need to be validated by assessing quality and purity on the basis of modern medicine protocol for treatment. During drug delivery, absorption as well as assimilation capacity enhances with particle size of drugs in the body. Hence selection of drug associated with physical parameter for best result as per prescribed doses in treatment. Bhasmikarana is the significant step in the preparation of bhasma. The idea underlying the process of “bhasmikarana” is to convert the substance into ash having the resultant properties in an active state. The bhasma not only radically remove the root cause of the disease, but also enhances the immune system inherent in the human body. Now market is having a wide range of bhasmas, as required to be processed according to unique, standard and advanced ayurvedic method.
