    Ethnozoological survey of Non conventional food items and their therapeutic use by the traditional healers of Dhemaji district of Assam, North-East India

    Assam one of the North Eastern states of India is gifted with diverse natural resources and inhabited by varied ethnic communities. Dhemaji district of Assam is also not exceptional in this regard. A survey was conducted on zootherapeutics among the traditional healers of Dhemaji district through personal interview from 2016 January to 2017 January in fifteen non tribal inhabited villages among 75 respondents of the age group 50-70years. It was documented that the ethnic people of Dhemaji used a total of 26 species of non conventional food items for their therapeutic value against various ailments including itching, burning, asthma, paralysis, weakness etc. These species include varieties of vertebrate and invertebrate species such as arthropods, molluscs, amphibians, aves, reptiles, pisces and mammals depending on their seasonal availability. The highest no of animal species used for the traditional therapeutics is mammals (29%) followed by pisces (19%), arthropoda and reptiles(15%), aves (13%) and the least are amphibia and mollusca (each comprises only 4% species). The study reveals that the ethnic people of Dhemaji are rich in traditional therapeutics and proper documentation and scientific analysis may lead to new drug discovery and conservation of these valuable faunal species.

    Efficacy of High Dilution Medicines in combination with physiotherapy in trauma induced low back pain- A Randomized Control Clinical Trial

    Background: Lower back pain can refer to a wide range of back injuries or conditions and is   one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders which necessitating health care and one of the reason for which many seek a family physician which is cause for limited range of motion. Homoeopathic medicines can offer long term relief from the backache. Methods: This is a three arm randomized controlled trial. Total 30 patients with trauma-induced low backache were chosen at random and divided equally into three study groups. Group A (n=10) was given Arnica 200 twice a day for the first 15 days, after 15 days, another evaluation was performed, and the dose was repeated as needed. Group B (n=10)  received constitutional medicine. The dose of constitutional medicine was repeated as needed. After careful case taking, case working, and repertorisation, Bryonia Alba Linn., Rhus Toxicodendron Linn., Nux Vomica Linn. were administered on a constitutional basis. Group C (n=10) received a placebo. All the three groups received physiotherapy to strengthen back muscles in order to reduce the likelihood of recurrenceData was anlaysed using STATA software using Chi square test, ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni Multiple comparison test. Results- Significant improvement in pain scores (VAS) was observed in both between the group and within the group comparisons and the effect was more pronounced in Group B. Conclusion: Hence we conclude that an individualized approach is more effective in the management of patients with trauma-induced low back pain

    Physiological correlation of the function of thyroid hormones as an entity of Agni

    Agni is an important concept explained in ayurvedic classics and which is considered as main causes for the manifestation of disease in the body. It controls the wide range of the biochemical reaction in the body from digestion to production of new cells. It has different forms like enzymes, hormones and secretions through which in controls the activities of body like production, maintenance and destruction of cells and tissues. Considered the role of thyroid hormones and its functions in the production maintenance of haemostasis od the body it can be considered as an entity of Agni (not whole Agni). Thyroid hormones play role in the digestion of food at GI level, it helps in biochemical reaction at tissue level and it also plays role in the conversion of the heterogenous substances to homogenous substances for the maintenance of haemostasis of body. So, here an attempt is made to corelate the functions of thyroid hormones as a part of Agni.

    Ayurvedic management of Eka Kushta w.s.r to Psoriasis: A Case study

    ABSTRACT: Eka Kushta is a type of Kshudra Kushta occurring mainly due to imbalance of Vata and Kapha Doshas, resembling Psoriasis in its clinical manifestations. Psoriasis is one of the most common dermatologic diseases, affecting up to 2% of world population. Childhood psoriasis is relatively common with prevalence of 1-3% of general population. Psoriasis is an immune mediated disease clinically characterized by erythematous, sharply demarcated papules and rounded plaques covered by silvery scales. The most commonly involved areas are the  elbows, gluteal cleft, knees and scalp. In Ayurveda various treatment modalities have been described in the  management of Eka kushta  which includes Shodana and Shamana. Hence, in the present case report a 8 year male child who came to Kaumarabhritya Out Patient Department presenting with symptoms of Eka kushta on elbows, knees, hands and feet, was treated with Shodana chikitsai.e, Virechana followed by Vasti and Shamana chikitsa i.e internal medication. The symptoms were assessed with the help PASI score at pre and post therapy, and the results were noted. After treatment satisfactory results were observed.     Ayurvedic Treatment of Vipadika (Kshudra Kushtha) - A Case Study

    Vipadika or Vaipadika is explained as one among Eleven Kshudra Kushtas (Minor skin ailments) which has the features of Paani-paada sputana (Cracking of palms and soles) associated with Teevravedana (Intense pain) as explained by Acharya Charaka. Based on the features the major dosha (Bio-forces of human body) involved is Vata along with Pitta and Kapha. Acharya Sushruta also explains it under Kshudra Kushta (Minor skin ailments) but with a different name called Padadaari. Though Vipadika sounds like a milder disease still it can be physically and emotionally stressful to the sufferer as in this present case. This is a case report of a 34 yrs female suffering with severe pain, itching and blackish discoloration of skin at both soles and left palm from the past 10 years. Due to various medications and chronic pain, patient was mentally sick too. The case was treated with Shodana (Bio purification) followed by shamana (Pacification) line of treatment along with significant lifestyle modifications. The uniqueness of the study lies in the selection of Shodhana (Bio purification)  where instead of Basti, Virechana is opted. Though it is a chronic case, the patient was able to get relieved within a month which created a promising faith towards Ayurvedic treatment.

    Comparative evaluation of Cranberry extract mouth rinse, Ozonized water and 0.2% Chlorhexidine on salivary Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli count: An in-vivo study

    Background: Cariogenic bacteria has always been considered as the highest risk factor for dental caries. The eradication of microorganisms from the oral health environment is important and hence may remedies have been suggested for its removal for a better oral health. Objectives:  To assess the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of  Cranberry extract and to determine the efficacy and compare the effect of the three products on salivary Streptococcus Mutans count and lactobacilli count.Materials and Methodology: A randomized control, double blind, parallel-group clinical trial was conducted on 75 subjects of age group of 15 years who were divided into three study groups ,Cranberry , Ozonized water and Chlorhexidine mouthwash. Microbial analysis was done by colony counter unit at baseline, 8thday and 15th day of using the mouthwashes. The inter-group variations was analyzed by using One way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc and Repeated measures for intra-group variations at different time intervals. Results: Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli colony count showed a statistically highly significant difference in reduction of colony count between the three groups (p=0.001) at 8th and 15th day of using the mouthwashes. Ozonized water showed better reduction when compared with Cranberry mouth wash in reduction of Streptococcus mutans count. Cranberry mouth wash had shown a better reduction when compared with Ozonized water in reduction of Lactobacilli colony count.Conclusion: The test mouthwash was effective in reducing the microbial count, similar to Chlorhexidine mouth wash.     In-Silico Prediction of Phytoconstituents from Manilkara Hexandra for Antidiabetic Activity Targeting GKRP (Glucokinase Regulatory Protein)

    Objective: A complex metabolic condition known as diabetes mellitus is caused by either inadequate or dysfunctional insulin. Once more, medicinal plants are being researched for the treatment of diabetes. Prototypical compounds found in medicinal plants have been the source of many conventional medications. The part of our investigation was to test the phytoconstituents of Manilkara hexandra for antidiabetic efficacy, in-silico. Methods: The pattern of interaction between the phytoconstituents from the Manilkara hexandra (Roxb.) Dubard, plant and the crystal structure of the antidiabetic proteins is evaluated using molecular docking in Discovery Studio (PDB ID: 4LY9). Later, SwissADME and pkCSM were used to screen for toxicity as well as the pharmacokinetic profile. Results: The docked results suggest that quercetin (-9.3 kcal/mol), kaempferol (-9.1 kcal/mol), p-coumaric acid (-6.4 kcal/mol) and cinnamic acid (-6.3 kcal/mol) for 4LY9 macromolecule has best binding towards antidiabetic activity as compared to the standard drug metformin (-5.0 kcal/mol). According to ADMET tests, pharmacokinetics and toxicity characteristics were also within acceptable bounds. Conclusion: Results from the binding potential of phytoconstituents aimed at antidiabetic activity were encouraging. It promotes the usage of Manilkara hexandra and offers crucial details on pharmaceutical research and clinical care.

    The Nutraceutical value of Horticultural Crops

    Nutraceuticals are one of the secondary metabolites that are being produced by diverse group of plants including the horticultural crops. The secondary metabolites in diverse horticultural crops are produced in significant amounts when encountered with different stresses such as wounding stress, abiotic stress, biotic stress, exposure to ultraviolet radiation etc. The secondary metabolite production in the plants enhances their response towards different stresses and help the plants to fight against the stresses in addition to their growth and development. The secondary metabolites expressed in horticultural crops such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, polyphenols, terpenoids have proven to exhibit number of health benefits such as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anticancer response. The indepth knowledge of the biosynthetic pathways could lead to the enhancement of the secondary metabolites. Also, the stress responses can be modulated in a ways that could lead to the optimal expression of the genes involved in the production of these secondary metabolites. In the present review article, various horticultural crops including two vegetable and four fruit crops were assessed for the production of secondary metabolites under stress conditions, the biosynthetic pathways leading to the specific secondary metabolite production along with their health benefits have been discussed in detail

    A comparative clinical evaluation of Herbal and synthetic dentifrices in dentinal hyper-sensitivity

    Background: Dentin hypersensitivity could be defined as a short, sharp pain arising from exposed dentin in response to stimuli typically thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic, or chemical and which cannot be ascribed to any other form of dental defect or pathology. In Ayurveda Dentinal Hypersensitivity can be compared with Dantaharsha. When teeth are sensitized to cold/breeze, hot, dry and sour eatables and have pain and shaky feeling, the condition is called ‘Dantaharsha’. Toothpastes are the most widely used dentifrices for delivering over-the-counter desensitizing agents. The aim study was to evaluate the effect of Herbal dentifrices in Dentinal hypersensitivity. The objective of this study was to prepare palatable formulation of Herbal Dentifrices to maintain oral health and prevent oral pathologies Materials and Methods: In this open-labelled, randomized, controlled study, 60 assenting patients between 18-40 years of age were enrolled and randomized into trial and control groups, after obtaining EC approval and informed consent. Those in the trial group received Herbal dentifrices, control group participants received Synthetic dentifrices. Herbal and synthetic dentifrices given to apply twice a day for 3 wks. Follow up was taken after second week and third week.The duration of treatment was of 21 days. Dentifrice was prepared under all hygienic conditions and safety precautions in GMP certified pharmacy.  Effect in Dentinal hypersensitivity was assessed by scored using VAS on air stimulus and cold-water stimulus and Air Blast Stimulation Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale. Appropriate statistical tests applied to the data to obtain results  Results: On analysis of data generated through clinical assessment, improvement was seen in dentinal hypersensitivity in both the groups. Though synthetic dentifrice showed better results than the herbal one, the trial drug exhibited a promising output in the study. Statistically Group B shows better results in the median Hypersensitivity score on VAS and Air blast stimulation compared to Group A.   Conclusion: In present study, improvement was seen in dentinal hypersensitivity in both the groups. Synthetic dentifrice showed better results than the herbal one. Although the results in the trial group were not disappointing. The results were encouraging enough to use the drug for further research. &nbsp

    Two – Arm, Randomized, Open Labeled, Comparative, Prospective Clinical Study to Assess the Efficacy of Amalaki Ghrita Aashchyotana versus Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Eye Ointment in Dry Eye Syndrome with special reference to Shushkaakshipaka

    Background: Increased computer work hours, reduced blinking and effect of light rays and radiation lead to raised number of cases of dry eye. Amalaki Ghrita Aashchyotana can be useful in the management of dry eye. Objectives: to compare the clinical efficacy of Amalaki Ghrita Aashchyotana with Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) eye ointment as a surface lubricant in dry eye syndrome with special reference to Shushkaakshipaka. Methods: In an open labeled, comparative, randomized, prospective clinical study, 60 patients of Dry eye syndrome were randomly selected randomly and categorized into 2 groups, each comprising 30 patients each. Patients in trial group were given Amalaki Ghrita Aashchyotana while patients in the control group were given local application of HPMC eye ointment for consecutive 90 days. Patients were assessed on various clinical parameters before and after the treatment. The data generated through clinical study was subjected to appropriate statistical tests. Results: On treatment of Amalaki Ghrita Aashchyotana in trial group and HPMC eye ointment in control group for 90 days showed significant difference in all objectives as well as subjective parameters on intra-group comparison. The statistically insignificant inter-group comparison shows that both the treatments were equivalent. No adverse events during or after the completion of study in any of the groups. Conclusion: Amalaki Ghrita Aashchyotana is equally efficient as HPMC eye ointment in Dry eye syndrome and has more advantage over HPMC ointment, as it also can help to improve visual acuity
