The effect of an Indian traditional Ayurvedic formulation (Rasa-sindoor) on Parkinson disease mouse model
Ayurveda is a traditional medication system in India. Experimental validation of ayurvedic formulations to combat with progressive, non-curable diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and knowing their mode of action are of current interest. The present study was aimed to explore the effect of dietary supplement of Rasa-sindoor (RS), an organo-metallic derivative of mercury, on drug (MPTP: 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) induced mouse model of Parkinson disease (PD). For this, mice were divided into three groups: (1) vehicle control (Normal saline treated), (2) Treated 1 (MPTP treated: 15mg/kg body weight, twice a day in 2 hours interval for 2 days, intraperitoneal injection) and (3) Treated 2 (MPTP: same as Treated 1 and Rasa Sindoor: 1gm/kg RS twice a day for 4 days). Total cellular RNA was extracted from sacrificed mice brain tissue and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed for Tyrosine Hydroxylase (TH) in 100 µ section of mid-brain region to check dopaminergic neurodegeneration. IHC revealed reduced TH activity in Treated 1 and Treated 2 as compared to vehicle control while Treated 2 showed greater TH activity than that of Treated 1. This preliminary observation was followed by a microarray based gene expression analysis, which results differential expression of a new set of genes involving neurogenesis, growth cone formation and axon guidance, activation of latent precursor cells etc.; validated by semi-quantitative real time PCR. Our result suggests that RS is neuroprotective and its mode of action may be through prevention of cell apoptosis and activation of latent precursor cells and cell growth
Development and assessment of Nirgundi-Chakramardha biopesticide against Diamondback Moth on Cabbage
Introduction: The global population is rapidly approaching 9.7 billion by 2050, with Africa and Asia playing significant roles in this growth. This surge necessitates increased crop production, highlighting the importance of effective pest control to ensure food security. India, facing an annual crop loss of about 30% due to pests and diseases, emphasizes the urgency of maintaining ecological balance in natural ecosystems. The diamond back moth (Plutella xylostella L.) poses a substantial threat to cruciferous plants globally, causing severe yield losses of 50–80% in infested cabbage. Addressing this challenge is crucial for minimizing crop losses and securing successful harvests. Our study aimed to analyze the emergence and abundance of small, medium, and large-sized larvae before and after applying treatments. Materials and Methods: A study with five treatments, including Nirgundi-chakramardha biopesticide and a control (Cypermethrin), was conducted. Each treatment was replicated four times, and the entire experiment was set up using a randomized block design. Results: After chemical application, all treatments displayed significant differences. The biopesticide in our study produced notable results within trial groups. Notably, the control group exhibited excellent results compared to the other treatments. Conclusion: The Nirgundi-chakramardha Biopesticide exhibited insecticidal activity against Diamondback moth pests, specifically targeting medium-sized larvae. Although not statistically significant compared to the control group, its efficacy in pest control, especially during the larval stage, indicates its potential as a viable pest management option. Further research and optimization could improve its effectiveness in combating Diamondback moth infestations
Molecular interactions of plant-derived inhibitors from Euphorbia hirta against binding sites of HPV E6 and E7 oncoproteins - An in-silico analysis
Although no cure for Human Papilloma virus (HPV) exists at the moment, effective vaccines are present that can prevent the most harmful strains of the virus from infecting people. While potential cures like therapeutic vaccines, immunotherapy, and gene therapy are still in the early stages of development and may take years to become widely available, we focussed on using traditional Siddha-based medicines (phytochemicals of Euphorbia hirta L.) as a prospect through in-silico docking studies. Twelve phytochemicals from Euphorbia hirta L. were selected to investigate the antiviral properties against HPV. These ligand structures were obtained from PubChem database, prepared for docking with two major HPV targets i.e., E6 and E7 oncoproteins obtained from PDB, using AutoDock tools. The analysis revealed the potential of lobeline and euphol ligands effectively binding to the active sites of E6 and E7 proteins respectively. Using the ADMET lab 2.0 server, the ligands were evaluated for their commercial drug potential by considering their absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity properties
Ayurvedic Management of Overweight child with Panchagavya Therapy – A Case Report
Childhood obesity is a widely spreading public health condition specifically after the COVID pandemic. It is also a risk factor for the onset of various non-communicable diseases. Obesity in childhood period does not only affects the growth and development in children but also has a life-long impact if neglected. This article encompasses management of an overweight child having complaints like Exertional dyspnea, Perspiration, increased appetite & thirst. The treatment protocol was based on Panchagavya. Both the methods of management of sthaulya were practiced viz. Shodhana (Purification therapy) in the form of Gomutradi Asthapana Basti & Shamana (Pacifying therapy) in the form of oral medication. Panchagavya is the group of five sacred elements obtained from the Indian cow, from which Gomutra has been said to be useful in treating Sthaulya in adults. Strict emphasis on Nidanparivarjana (Avoidance of causative factors) was also considered. Marked improvement in the BMI from 25.4 (Before treatment) to 22.9 (After treatment) and the clinical symptoms from grade 2 to grade 0 was observed. Modification in the oral administration of Gomutra in the form of Gomutra arka was found to be palatable considering the age of the child. Gomutra via both Asthapana Basti and Oral route helped in the breakdown of the Pathology of Sthaulya. Diet restriction also helped in the process
Effect of Meshashrungi Patra vati and Ajashrungi Patra vati in management of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus-A Randomised, Single blind, Clinical Study
India is known as the Diabetic capital of the world due to the increasing Diabetic population. Diabetes is increasing day by day because of lifestyle changes. As per the WHO statistics around 2 million deaths occur each year because of diabetes. Hence there is a serious concern to find an effective and safe medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Many herbal drugs have been researched and found to be effective in controlling the diabetes. One of such herbs is Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.) R.Br. ex Sm. (GS). It is equated with Meshashrungi, mentioned in the Ayurvedic texts. Ajashrungi (Pergularia daemia (Forssk.) Chiov.) (PD) is also taken as a substitute for Meshashrungi. So, to find out the efficacy of both the drugs in the management of diabetes, the present work is taken up. It was a Prospective, Randomised, Single blind, Comparative Clinical Study. A total of 40 subjects were randomised into two groups with 20 subjects each. Group A were administered Meshashrungi patra vati and Group B were administered Ajashrungi patra vati for a period of 60 days with a follow up for every 15 days. Assessment was done based on changes seen in subjective and objective Parameters. Significant changes were observed in both the groups before and after the treatment, but when compared between the groups there was no significant difference. This indicates that both the drugs are equally efficacious in the management of diabetes mellitus. Hence, both the drugs can be used as substitutes for the management of diabetes mellitus.
The Role of Yogic Practices in Psychological Alteration: A Comprehensive Review
This review explores the role of yogic practices in the physiological mechanisms and psychological alterations, focusing on the mental health benefits of yoga, particularly in managing stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation. Yogic practices such as asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation are gaining recognition as complementary therapies for psychological well-being. Asanas help in reducing physical tension, promoting relaxation, and improving overall emotional regulation by fostering a mind-body connection. Pranayama techniques, through controlled breathing, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol levels and inducing a state of calm, which helps alleviate anxiety and stress. Meditation, which encourages mindfulness, enhances emotional resilience by increasing self-awareness and promoting a non-judgmental attitude toward one’s thoughts and feelings. These practices collectively contribute to a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression, while also improving cognitive function and emotional stability. While the existing literature strongly supports yoga’s role in mental health, future research is needed to assess the long-term effects of yoga on psychological well-being. Additionally, studies should focus on integrating yoga into traditional mental health care approaches, providing an accessible, holistic strategy for improving emotional regulation and overall mental health outcomes. In this review we majorly describe that Yoga, through asanas, pranayama, and meditation, enhances emotional regulation, reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, and improves cognitive function. The findings suggest that yoga contributes to improvements in emotional balance, mental clarity, and stress reduction. Future research should explore its long-term effects and integration into mental health care
Ayurvedic and Modern Nutritional Approaches for the Impact of Probiotics on Human Health: A Review
Background: Human are unique reservoir of diverse and highly living community of microorganisms which collectively forms the human microbiome. The human gut is home to more than 100–1000 different types of microbes, all of which have a profound impact on host health by modulating the internal environment of the host. These organisms are essential for good digestion, anabolism and catabolism. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria are commonly used probiotic cultures. They play important role in maintenance of good health, immune system. In Ayurvedic classical text, Dadhi (Curd) and Takra (Buttermilk) are considered as the source of Probiotic, which is beneficial for the gut health. It is beneficil for the diarrhoel disease, constipation, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome. Aims and Objectives: The purpose of the study is to highlight the various impact of probiotics on human health through Ayurvedic and Modern nutritional aspects. Method and Materials: This paper has been taken from various research paper from PubMed, Google scholar etc. Discussion & Conclusion: The microbiome diversity is likely important in health maintenance, and it is likely that broad-spectrum probiotics may increase the effectiveness of treatment. They have an important role in the maintenance of immunologic equilibrium in the GI tract through direct interaction with immune cells. Probiotics are useful and friendly microbes. There is a relationship between disease, health, the immune system, and changes in the microbiota. They are able to compete with the bad microbes and colonize our digestive system. They are also able to ferment our food to simpler by products and could promote our health by many different mechanisms. In Ayurveda, there are many Ahara Kalpana are mentioned, which are prepared by using Dadhi and Takra and those Kalpana are ensured as healthy microbiome
Efficacy of Integrated Ayurveda Treatment in Type 2 Diabetes mellitus with special reference to Prameha: A Randomised controlled Trial
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is marked by persistent hyperglycemia, often due to insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) constitutes 90% of cases and shares similarities with Prameha, a disorder characterized by frequent urination. Aims and objectives: This study aimed to compare Integrated Ayurveda Treatment (IAT) with standard diabetic treatment for Prameha. Materials and methods: A randomized, controlled open-label trial involved 200 T2DM subjects with HbA1C above 7%, taking metformin (≥1g /day). They were assigned to Standard Dietary Treatment (SDT) or IAT. SDT comprised metformin, dietary, and lifestyle modifications, while IAT included metformin with Ayurvedic medicine, specific Ayurveda diet, and yoga. Observation and result: Observations favoured Ayurveda treatment over standard diabetes treatment for most Prameha preliminary symptoms (purvarupa). Regarding Prameha rupa (symptoms), IAT significantly outperformed than SDT. Also, Ayurveda treatment group, led to improvements in HbA1C, fasting and postprandial blood sugar, and insulin resistance parameters compared to standard treatment group. Conclusion: Integrating Madhumeha ghana vati, ayurveda diet, and yoga with standard treatment yielded positive subjective and objective outcomes for Prameha, without significant adverse events. This suggests the potential benefits of combining Ayurvedic approaches with conventional care in managing prameha.
Phytochemical analysis, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Screening of Shoot Extracts of Viola odorata linn. from Shikari Devi Wildlife Sanctuary, Himachal Pradesh, India
The traditional healers made significant use of the Viola odorata of the Violaceae family for its many ethnopharmacological uses. The phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of solvent extracts from Viola odorata shoots were studied, and the antibacterial potential of the optimized extract was also examined. The Soxhlet apparatus was used to extract phytochemicals from shoots in four different solvents, including n-hexane, butanol, methanol, and water. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyze the stigmasterol profile of V. odorata shoots. The extracts were found to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, and phenolics, all of which were found in significant amounts in the methanolic extract. The methanolic extract also showed the highest radical scavenging activity (79.23 ± 0.44 %). TLC and HPLC profiling of methanolic extract revealed a considerable amount of stigmasterol in the shoots of Viola odorata. HPLC analysis of the methanolic shoot extract of the plant revealed the presence of 0.009 µg mL-1 stigmasterol. Optimized Methanolic extract showed respectable in-vitro antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis (2.6 ± 0.41 mm zone of inhibition), E. coli (3.4 ± 0.71 mm zone of inhibition), and Candida albicans (3.5 ± 0.48 mm zone of inhibition). The outcomes demonstrated that the methanolic shoot extract of Viola odorata from Shikari Devi Wildlife Sanctuary, Himachal Pradesh, India, is a valuable herb for further screening and might be prepared for in-vivo animal studies
Leech Therapy-aided recovery: A case study on accelerated healing of Decubitus ulcers in paraplegic patients
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are localized skin injuries that can extend to underlying structures like subcutaneous tissue or muscle due to prolonged pressure on a specific area of the body. This pressure impedes blood supply, depriving the affected tissue of nutrients and oxygen, leading to tissue breakdown and ulcer formation over time. Immobilized patients, confined to bed due to various conditions, are highly susceptible to developing pressure ulcers, with approximately 85% attributed to prolonged sitting or lying down. Pressure ulcers near the rectum pose particular challenges as the tissue in this area is prone to acute ischemic injury from external factors like shear forces and compression. Treating pressure ulcers requires a multidimensional approach, focusing on relieving pressure with specialized support surfaces such as pressure-relieving mattresses or cushions, along with regular changes in patient posture to alleviate continuous pressure. Maintaining proper hygiene and wound care is essential to prevent infection, with advanced techniques like dressings, topical medications, and occasional surgical interventions for severe cases. Adequate nutrition and hydration play a vital role in supporting the healing process. Collaborative efforts from healthcare professionals specializing in wound management, nutrition, and physical therapy are often necessary to address the complex nature of pressure ulcers. Prevention through regular assessment, implementing preventive measures such as proper positioning, optimizing nutrition, and providing education to patients and caregivers on skin care and pressure relief techniques are crucial in mitigating pressure ulcer development
