Management of skin disorders through ayurvedic dermatology and internal Ayurvedic medicines
Background: Skin (Twak in Sanskrit) is the largest organ and covers the entire body surface. It acts as a chemical barrier and protects the body from various external hazards. Ayurveda emphasizes that prolonged ingestion of food during indigestion, use of Viruddha Ahara (food–food interactions, food processing interactions) and restricted dietary habits i.e. intake of sour, salty, curd, fish etc. excessively are the main causative factors of skin disorders. These causative factors vitiate the Tridosha (Vata, Pitta & Kapha) and affect tissues of Twak (skin), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscles), and Ambu (lymphatic tissue) of the body. These seven factors are pathogenic materials of skin disorders. Objectives: The present review is assessed Skin disorders can be managed using Ayurvedic dermatology and internal Ayurvedic medicines. Methodology: Literature available in authoritative Ayurvedic texts, and the research articles published in the journals indexed in Google Scholars, PubMed etc. are the main sources of information for the present review. Result: In Ayurveda, the concept of dermatology is very well addressed. Skin diseases are described under the chapter of Kushtha Roga (minor and major). The drugs used in the management of skin disorders possess the properties of Raktashodana, Raktaprasadhak, Rakta Shamana, Vishagna, Krimighna, Kandughna and Rasayana. Pharmacologically, these drugs are identified as antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial as well as cosmetic agents which not only use in the treatment of skin infections but also for beautification of skin. Conclusion: It is concluded that a good number of herbal and compound medicines are mentioned in Ayurvedic texts for skin care, and management of skin diseases. Most of the dosage forms, including Churna, Kwatha, Vati, Rasashaushadhies, Ghrita, Rasayana, Bhasma, and others, are being administered internally as an ailments of skin disorders
Cadaveric Study on Kurcha Sharir along with its modern perspectives
In Ayurveda, Rachana Sharir examines the embryological and structural organization of the human body. One of the branches of Rachana Sharir that describes a certain body structure is Paribhasha Sharir. Literally, Paribhasha signifies terminology. The first step in understanding any given subject is to grasp its basic terminology and main concepts. Kurcha is among such unexplored topics that come from the sannipat of dhamani and snayu. Kurcha is examined in this study from the perspective of modern anatomy, contrasting its location and related elements with knowledge from both Ayurvedic and Modern medical literature. The purpose of the cadaveric dissection method is to investigate the anatomical structures related to the kurcha and to evaluate the applicability of traditional Ayurvedic concepts, such as those described by Sushruta, in the context of modern medical understanding.
Phytoestrogen: A protective shield for post-menopausal symptoms and breast cancer risk
Menopause is a physiological unavoidable condition in women’s life which leads to vasomotor, psychological, urogenital and chronic diseases collectively termed as post-menopausal symptoms (PMS). Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is conventional line of treatment for treating PMS in which estrogens replacement is major choice for better therapeutic efficacy against symptoms like hot flushes, osteoporosis, hormonal balances, insomnia, obesity etc. However, estrogen is reported risk factor for breast cancer. The review discusses Ayurveda based strategies for management of PMS with phytoestrogen herbs, diet, lifestyle modification, de-addiction measures, yoga, aroma therapies etc. supported by evidence-based documentation.Herbs namely Dhanyaka (Coriander sativum), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia L), Chandana (Santalum album L), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera L. Dunal), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi DC), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus L), Kumari (Aloe vera L), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra L), Haridra (Curcuma longa L), Triphala (Combination of fruits of Haritaki, Bibhitak, Amalaki in the proportion 1:2:4), Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris L), Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna L.), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia L.), Ela (Elettaria cardamomum L), Narikela (Coccus nucifera L), Masha (Phaseolus vulgaris L), Mudga (Vigna radiata L). Shunthi (Zinziber officinale Roxb), Methika (Trigonella foenumgraecum L), Tila (Sesamum indicum L) are the natural sources of phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogen don’t exert side effects like synthetic estrogen molecules. These herbs are useful for management of various symptoms of PMS. Having anti-cancer potential against breast carcinoma these are useful for prevention of risk of breast cancer
Management of Scalp Psoriasis through Ayurvedic Modalities – Case Report
In ayurveda skin diseases are described as Kushta Rogas. Kushta Rogas are of two types mahakushta and khudrakushta. Ekakushtha is a type of Kshudra Kushtha. Ekakushtha, as described by Sushruta, presents with distinct clinical features. These include a lack of sweating or dryness (Aswedanam), widespread coverage across the entire body (Mahavastu), and a scaly appearance resembling fish scales (Matsyashakalamam). The skin coloration observed in Ekakushtha can vary, ranging from a dark hue to a pinkish-red tone, according to Sushruta\u27s observations..Psoriasis is a long-lasting skin condition marked by red, scaly patches that are itchy and tend to come and go. These patches can appear anywhere on the body, but they\u27re most commonly found on the elbows, knees, and scalp. Scalp psoriasis specifically causes raised, red patches on the scalp that may be thin or thick and can cover small areas or the entire scalp.The global prevalence of psoriasis varies from 0.12–8%, indicating that it is a common dermatosis.Many treatments are available in modern science but they have various complication & side effects.Here in this case we used ayurvedic shodhan and shaman therapies & successfully treated the case.A 29 years male came in the OPD with chief complaints of red, scaly patch with severe itching and with burning sensation on lower occipital and neck region since 8 months.The patient was treated with Shodhan and Shaman Chikitsa.Patient got complete relief after the completion of therapy with no reoccurrence. Thus it can be concluded that Shodhana(Vamana and Virechna) followed by Shamana Chikitsa with pathya pathya described in Ayurveda is effective in the management of Ekakushtha (Psoriasis)
Formulation and Evaluation of Moisturising Cream containing Coriandrum sativum (Coriander) extract
Aim: To formulate and evaluate a moisturising cream containing Coriandrum sativum (Coriander) extract. Method: The extract used for preparing the cream was obtained by extracting the coriander leaves by maceration followed by Soxhlet extraction method. The extract was evaluated for phytochemical analysis to determine whether chemical constituents were present. The extract was evaluated for anti-bacterial test to check for zones of inhibition using disc diffusion method. Anti-solar activity of the extract was also studied to check for sun protective effect by using UV-Spectrophotometer in the range of 200-400 nm. For the development of cream, the oil and water phases were melted separately into which coriander extract and a suitable preservative was added with continuous stirring. The oil phase was gradually combined into the aqueous phase while continuously stirring to achieve the ideal semi-solid consistency, and an appropriate perfume was used for a pleasing smell. The prepared formulations were evaluated for parameters like organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, type of emulsion, skin irritation test. Results: Phytochemical analysis of coriander extract was performed, and it was concluded that terpenoids, sterols, carbohydrates, alkaloids, tannins, and flavonoids were present and saponins was found to be absent. The diameters of the zones obtained for the anti- microbial activity of the extract was found out to be 18 mm and 14 mm for dapsone. The extract showed good antimicrobial activity against dapsone and methanol. The UV absorption spectra showed a strong absorption at 4.00 AU at 205 nm. SPF values were calculated using normalized product function and mean of absorbance, and the obtained SPF value was found out to be 8.2. The prepared formulations were found to be smooth and dark green in colour with a pleasant odour. All the formulations were checked for other parameters like optimum pH, viscosity, spreadability and it was found out that formulation batch F3 showed better results as compared to other batches
Tridax procumbens L. Extracts: Ethnomedicinal Wound Healing Investigation
This research aims to assess the wound healing activity and antimicrobial potential of various extracts (Methanol, Ethanol, n-Hexane, Chloroform, and Aqueous) derived from Tridax procumbens, a plant traditionally used in wound treatment by tribal communities. The study includes evaluating the antimicrobial activity of the extracts using the agar well diffusion method and preparing plant extract-infused gauze and ointment. Different solvents were used to extract the plant compounds using the Soxhlet apparatus. Antimicrobial activity of the extracts was tested against microorganisms isolated from infected wound samples, cultivated on various media (Nutrient agar, Cetrimide agar, Blood agar, MacConkey agar, and MRSA). Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined using the agar well diffusion method, identifying the antimicrobial efficacy of the plant extracts. The ethanolic extract of Tridax procumbens exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, among other test organisms (Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Proteus sp.,) isolated from the infected wound samples. Phytochemical tests were conducted to identify bioactive compounds responsible for wound healing, which were subsequently isolated using column chromatography and purified via thin layer chromatography. FTIR analysis was performed to determine the functional groups present, and HPLC was conducted for further characterization. The presence of flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids in the plant extracts was identified as the active ingredients responsible for wound healing. Furthermore, a gauze infused with plant extracts was prepared to facilitate wound healing and an ointment was formulated using the ethanolic extract of Tridax procumbens and an ointment base.
 
Preliminary Physicochemical Evaluation of Madhumalini Vasant Ras tablet – An Ayurveda Herbo-mineral Formulation
Introduction: As per WHO reports, 170 WHO member states have been practicing various indigenous traditional medicines. For the global reorganisation of Ayurvedic drugs advanced standardisation techniques may be involved to maintain quality assurance. Madhumalini Vasant Ras (MVR) is a well-known Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation used in the treatment of IUGR (Intra Uterine Growth Retardation). This formulation is not mentioned in the Ayurveda Formulary of India and there is no data on the quality standards of MVR available. So in this study, preliminary data on physicochemical analysis along with HPTLC evaluation of Madhumalini vasant Ras is generated. Aim and objective: To evaluate and generate data on the physicochemical parameters of the MVR tablet. Materials and Method: The raw drugs were authenticated by experts of Dravya Guna and Rassastra Bhaishajya Kalpana departments and tablets (125 mg) were prepared at the pharmacy, Parul institute of Ayurveda, Vadodara. Then the physico-chemical parameters and microbial limits were checked and HPTLC analysis was done. Results: While evaluating the physicochemical parameters, the pH value was 4.19, LOD 6.01%, Total ash value 11.54%, Acid insoluble ash 8.70%, water-soluble extractive value was 22.20% w/w, alcohol soluble extractive value was 13.40% w/w, HPTLC at 254 nm and at 366 nm showed five common spots. The Microbiological analysis shows that the formulation is free from microbes. Conclusion: Preliminary data on organoleptic characters, antimicrobial evaluation, various physicochemical parameters and HPTLC of MVR tablet is generated. These data can be used as a standard for future standardization studies

The review emphasizes the potential advantages of polyherbs, such as synergistic effects, reduced side effects, and natural origin, making them promising candidates for cough management. Furthermore, the article highlights the importance of evaluating dosage, formulation, and bioactive components to optimize therapeutic outcomes. This comprehensive review contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of polyherbal remedies in the treatment of cough-related disorders
Role of Yogic Practices and Panchakarma on Irritable Bowel Syndrome
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of an 8-week intervention combining yogic practices and Panchakarma treatments in alleviating symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and improving overall quality of life. IBS is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements, which can significantly affect both physical and psychological well-being. Traditional management strategies primarily include dietary modifications, medications, and stress reduction techniques, but these do not always provide comprehensive relief. In this context, the study explored the potential benefits of integrating holistic approaches, specifically yoga and Panchakarma, as complementary therapies for IBS. Participants underwent an 8-week program involving daily yoga practices designed to reduce stress and improve digestive function, alongside Panchakarma treatments aimed at detoxification and balancing the body’s internal energies (Doshas). The study assessed changes in IBS symptoms, including pain, bloating, and bowel irregularities, as well as overall quality of life. Data were collected through self-reported symptom diaries, questionnaires, and clinical assessments. Results indicated significant improvements in IBS-related symptoms and a notable enhancement in participants\u27 physical and emotional well-being. The findings suggest that combining yogic practices with Panchakarma therapies may offer a promising alternative or adjunct to conventional IBS treatments, offering a holistic approach to managing this complex condition
