    Efficacy of Herbal Medicines in Management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: A Scoping Review

    Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is most frequently stated gynaecological and metabolic disorder. Many pharmacological drugs have been used to treat PCOS with numerous side effects, which have resulted in the selection of alternative treatments from natural sources. Hence, this review aims to investigate the efficacy of medicinal herbs in regularising ovulation, hyperandrogenism, and other metabolic condition in PCOS. To conduct this review, extensive literature was searched between 2010 to 2021, from PubMed, Scopus, Google scholar, and ProQuest. Based on the keywords “polycystic ovarian syndrome” or “medicinal herbs” or “ovarian cysts” or “hyperandrogenism” or “insulin resistance”. Irrelevant studies were excluded from the database. Twelve clinical studies and nine animal studies were included in the review paper. Treatment included herbs such as “Cinnamomum zeylanicum Meism, 1864”,“Curcuma longa L. 1753”, “Tribulus terrestris L. (1753)”,“Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt., 1818” and “Vitex agnus-castus (1753)”. These bioactive compounds have shown to reduce luteinising hormone, progesterone, oestradiol and fasting insulin levels. The evidence supports Vitex agnus-castus and Cimicifuga racemosa have a synergistic impact in management of amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea, infertility, and ovulation. cinnamon spp. and Curcuma longa improve insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Tribulus terresitris alone and in combination with “Withania somnifera Dunal, 1852” & “Nardostachys jatamansi (D.Don) DC, 1830” has shown promising effects but in the latent stage. Based on the evidence, it may be suggested herbal medicines are effective, alone or in alternative form, in amelioration of the symptoms of PCOS

    Assessment of polyherbal formulations in managing diabetic retinopathy: An in-vivo experimental model study

    Background: Chronic hyperglycemia induced oxidative stress may leads to many complications in diabetic patient i.e. nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy, stroke, ischemic heart diseases etc. The present study was designed to find the protective effect of polyherbal formulation in rat model of diabetic retinopathy. Material & Methods: Healthy 36 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups namely normal control (n=6), diabetic (n=10), standard metformin (n=10) and test drug (n=10) consisting Triphala (Haritaki, Aamlaki, Bibhitaki), Devdaru, Daruharidra and Musta After induction of diabetes with streptozotocin (45mg/kg), rats were kept without any treatment for period of three weeks for induction of diabetic retinopathy followed by treatment with test drug (540mg/kg) for further 8weeks. HbA1c level was tested. Eye tissue homogenates were subjected to biochemical analysis to evaluate the aldose reductase (AR) activity, oxidative stress parameters namely Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LPO). Histopathological analysis of retinal tissue was conducted. Results: Test drug showed significant reduction in HBA1C level equivalent to standard metformin. Significant reduction was observed in AR and LPO levels and non-significant reduction in SOD, GSH were observed. Histopathological evaluation indicative of restoration and enhancement in cellular stability of retinal tissues. Conclusion: The herbal formulation showed potent hypoglycemic and antioxidant effect. It can be used as an adjuvant medication in prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy

    Ayurvedic intervention as an adjunct therapy in Non-union 5th metatarsal fracture: A case report

    Proximal 5th metatarsal (MT) fractures are a common sequel of foot injury and painful nonunion is one of its well-described consequences. The purpose of this study is to present the manifestation and determine the effectiveness of ayurvedic healing measure for symptomatic 5th MT non unions. Here we narrate a case study presented with the painful nonunion of 5th metatarsal bone following failure of conventional management. The subject was investigated for following parameters: (1) injury mechanism; (2) time to solid radiographic union; and (3) time to resume usual activities. The subject was monitored until there was a clear clinical and radiological union. The mechanism of injury in this case was a fall over forefoot with plantar flexion, inversion and abduction. The nonunion was demonstrated in radiograph even after 3 months of fracture. “Sarivadi lepa” (therapeutic application of drug) was used as external application and bandaging to reduce pain, inflammation, and compliment healing process of the fracture along with immobilization. By the end of 60 days, radiograph showed evidence of callus formation and solid radiographic union was demonstrated. The subject resumed to his usual activities after complete union and maintained well till last follow up. Thus, we can claim that Sarivadi bandhana (bandaging) is beneficial in subsiding pain, swelling and to facilitate healing of fracture along with immobilization. We recommend further study on Sarivadi Lepa in larger sample to establish its assistance in fracture healing action

    Development of stability indicating RP-HPLC method for Quercetin estimation in Nanostructure liquid crystalline dispersion

    An attempt has been made to develop stability representing the reverse-phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) method for quantitative estimation of quercetin Nanostructure liquid crystalline dispersion. HPLC method was developed by C-18 column with the mobile phase comprising of 0.4% orthophosphoric acid [OPA]: Acetonitrile [ACN] (45:55, v/v), isocratically pumped with a rate of flow 1 mL/min and 255 nm detection wavelength. The method validation of HPLC parameters and degradation tests was analysed by International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines. The developed HPLC method was found to be specific, linear (r2>0.999) over the selected range of concentration 2-14μg/mL, precise, with the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) as 0.021 and 0.064μg/mL respectively. The entrapment efficiency of quercetin for prepared Nanostructure Liquid Crystalline Dispersion (NLCD) was observed to be 94.55 %. The developed HPLC method was applied for the quantification of quercetin in NLCD. The quercetin peak was completely resolved without any disturbances from degrading products and additives. The developed HPLC method was found to be specific, sensitive, and adequate for the regular assay of marketed products, and NLCD nanoformulation containing quercetin

    Effect of Pranayama and Meditation on Emotional Intelligence among Undergraduate Students: A Randomized Controlled Study

    Introduction: Emotional intelligence (EI) manages emotional disturbances, thereby making a substantive contribution to cognitive aptitude and mental health amelioration among university students. Mindfulness yoga enhances the positive connectivity between mind and emotion, thereby enhancing mental and emotional well-being. The objective of present study is to determine the effectiveness of pranayama and mindfulness (vipassana) meditation on EI among undergraduate (UG) students. Methods: One hundred fifty university students (aged 18-23 years) were employed for this randomised control trial. The students were randomly allocated into two groups: experimental (n=75) and control (n=75). The experimental group practiced daily 60 min intervention of pranayama and mindfulness (vipassana) meditation for 10 weeks. The control group carried out their daily routine activity.Data were analysed through SPSS 24.0, and the repeated measures ANOVA test followed by Bonferroni adjusted post hoc analyses were applied. The participants were accessed for emotional intelligence, anxiety, depression, and stress using standard measures. Results: The findings of the study showed that pranayama and mindfulness (vipassana) meditation practices enhance the level of EI (p<0.001) and manage mental health by decreasing the level of anxiety (p<0.001), depression (p<0.001) and stress (p<0.001) in UG students.These effects were observed within and between groups comparison following the 10 weeks intervention period. Discussion: The study findings emphasise the potential of pranayama and mindfulness (vipassana) meditation practices in positive effects on emotional coping behaviour and mental well-being in students. Conclusion: The study suggests that pranayama and mindfulness (vipassana) meditation can be useful to enhance EI and reduce anxiety, depression, and stress in UG students

    Development and validation of a tool to assess Rukshatha in healthy individual

    In Ayurveda Ruksha (Dry) Guna (Property)which is one among Gurvadi Guna(Biological qualities) cause dryness. The property of Ruksha Guna (Dry property) is increaseVata and normalizes Kapha and also decreases body Strength and normal colour of body. The main objective of study is to find out tool for assessing Ruksha guna in healthy individual. Based on theoretical reference, FGD and IDI conducted among experts 35 items are generated in two domains (Physical and Psychological). From this 29 items are selected for final administration on selected sample for validity and reliability assessment. Each item is scored using 4 point Likert scale -no, rarely, often, every time with scoring 0, 1, 2, 3 respectively. Subjective question assessed by interrogation and objective parameter dryness of body parts are also assessed by this scoring method. Total 100 samples are selected for final administration of sample. The tool with 29 items gave a Cronbach’s Alpha 0.745 (n=29) showing high construct validity and internal consistency. After the reliability and validity assessment 1 items  deleted from the  administered tool in the selected sample. Finally there are 28 items are included in the Ruksha Guna assessment tool.

    A report on ethnomedicinal plants used for the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis by the tea tribes of Morigaon district of Assam, India

    The present study deals with the documentation of ethnomedicinal plants used against rheumatoid arthritis by the tea tribe community of Morigaon district of Assam. The tea tribes of the district still rely on herbal remedies for curing rheumatoid arthritis. To document the plant species used by tea tribes against rheumatoid arthritis, frequent study field surveys were conducted in different places of the district. A semi-structured questionnaire on traditional knowledge was used to elicit information from the concerned tribe of the study area. The documented data was evaluated using quantitative ethnobotanical indices like Use Value (UV) and Fidelity Level Percentage (FL %). From the study, a total of 33 plants belonging to 32 genera under 24 families were documented. The data was evaluated using quantitative ethnobotanical indices like Use Value and Fidelity Level Percentage. Five species were found having the highest use value and four species showed fidelity levels of 100 %. Further research is required to investigate the pharmacological effects and the chemical constituents present in the plant species that could be the basis for developing some novel product in the future

    A Study to find the association between Obesity and Osteoporosis according to distinct fat depots - A survey study

    Medodhara Kala is the zone of transition between Meda Dhatu (Adipose Tissue) and Asthi Dhatu (Bone Tissue). So, any pathology in Medodhara kala is responsible for deprived Asthi Dhatu (Osteoporosis). Obesity is the condition where there is abnormal built-up of Meda Dhatu (Adipose tissue) altering the osteogenic potential of Adipose tissue. Among the various types of Obesity based on the fat accumulation at different fat depots, abdominal obesity is identified as the risk factor for the lower bone mineral density and resulting fracture. The present study aims to find the prevalence of osteoporosis among various types of obesity like generalised obesity, abdominal obesity, isolated Abdominal Obesity etc. Cross sectional survey was designed in which 100 subjects fulfilling inclusion criteria, willing to participate were enrolled in the study after obtaining informed consent. Participants were divided into two groups i.e. 50 Medoroga (obesity) patients and 50 non-obese volunteers between age group of 20 and 50 irrespective of genders. The collected data comprising Waist Circumference, Waist Hip ratio, BMI classification and other anthropological measurements and T-score was analysed using GraphPad InStat Version 3.6 software. Chi-Square test showed significant association (p<0.05) of osteoporosis or osteopenia in patients of generalised with abdominal obesity and isolated abdominal obesity, indicating that the prevalence of osteoporosis rises with increasing waist circumference. Significant association between visceral fat depot (Abdominal Obesity) with the bone mineral density, suggesting the osteogenic potential of Medodhara Kala which gets minimised with increase BMI (Body mass index)

    Assessment of the Efficacy of Indigenously Prepared Azadirachta Indica Mouthwash on P. Gingivalis in Chronic Periodontitis Patients: A Microbiological Study

    Aim: The present study aimed to compare and evaluate the antimicrobial effect of Azadirachta Indica (Neem mouthwash) to chlorhexidine mouthwash on P. gingivalis. Materials ans Methods: The subjects were divided into 2 groups. Group I included 5 subjects who used self-prepared neem mouthwash, and Group II included 5 subjects who used 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. Subgingival plaque samples were taken at baseline and the 15th day after using the mouthwash and subjected to microbiological evaluation. Results: The colony forming unit (CFU) of P. gingivalis was calculated at baseline and on the 15th day after using mouthwash using the digit colony counter. A comparison of the total CFU of both mouthwashes revealed that the neem mouth was effective in reducing the microbial colonies of P. gingivalis from baseline to the 15th day. Conclusion: It was concluded that the self-prepared neem mouthwash was effective in reducing the colony-forming unit of P. gingivalis in the sub-gingival plaque samples and showed better results than the commercially available chemical-based chlorhexidine mouthwash.

    In Vivo Efficacy of Advanced Drug Delivery System Loaded with Different Medicaments For Regenerative Endodontics

    Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of an advanced drug delivery system loaded with calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate for regenerative endodontic procedures. Materials & Methods: Preparation of Drug Delivery System: A biocompatible carrier material hydrogel is prepared which is capable of encapsulating calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate particles. Characterisation: The drug delivery system is characterised for its morphology and release kinetics. Animal Study: In vivo studies are conducted using animal models of pulpal injury or infection. The drug delivery system is applied in root canal procedures, and the regeneration of pulp tissue and formation of hard tissue barriers are assessed using histological and radiographic analyses. Results & Discussion: Sustained Release Property: The drug delivery system exhibits potent endodontics regeneration property with sustained release of calcium hydroxide contributing to effective bacterial elimination. Tissue Regeneration: The incorporation of calcium silicate promotes dentinogenesis and facilitates the formation of hard tissue barriers, leading to enhanced tissue regeneration within the root canal space. Conclusion: In conclusion, the advanced drug delivery system loaded with calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate shows great promise for enhancing regenerative endodontic procedures. Its ability to provide sustained release of medicaments, promote tissue regeneration, and improve treatment outcomes makes it a valuable tool in modern endodontic practice
