Impact of Yoga Therapy for the Management of Type-2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review
Background: The most prevalent type of diabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), accounts for more than 90% of cases of diabetes globally. As of right now, 425 million adults worldwide are believed to have type-2 diabetes; by 2045, that number is expected to increase to 629 million. The main cause of T2DM is the deterioration of the regular functioning of pancreatic (β-cells) and insulin resistance. Yogic therapy is a proven method of stabilizing an individual from a metabolic disorder, and lifestyle disorder. Through asanas and pranayama, we can control the blood sugar level. Objective: To assess Yoga Therapy\u27s effectiveness for managing Madhumeha (Diabetes mellitus-II) in the review article. Design: The PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched from January 2022 to February 2023 for eligible RCTs using the keywords ‘Yoga Therapy’ and ‘Type-II Diabetes Mellitus’. Intervention: Treatment with any regimen of Yoga Therapy or Yogic Intervention (Asana, Pranayama). Outcome Measures: The number and results of the studies were identified and presented as a systematic review. Result: This systematic review resulted in understanding the different mechanisms by which Yoga Therapy works in type-2 Diabetes Mellitus. Which include Asanas and Pranayama, were effective in regulating fasting blood sugar (p < 0.05), Postprandial Fasting blood Sugar level (p < 0.0001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), Triglyceride ((p<0.05), Low-Density Lipoprotein (p>0.05) and High-Density Lipoprotein (p<0.05), BMI Body Mass Index (p < 0.001), BP Blood Pressure (P= 0.072), Serum (p-value <0.0001) relative to the control group
Therapeutic Effect of Ayurveda Medicines in the Management of Post-Hemicolectomy Case of Adenocarcinoma of Ascending Colon – A Case Report
Life on earth has been modernized with new avenues of modern science and technology. This luxurious life also leading to worries and tension and in consequence a number of life style related disorders like cancer, renal diseases, AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, Auto-immune disorders, SLE etc. Cancer is more serious concern because of its increasing incidence with high mortality and morbidity rate. In Ayurveda we found many conditions which mimic the symptoms of cancer and detailed knowledge regarding its management also available. Colon cancer is third leading diagnosed type of cancer. Different treatment protocols available for management depending on the stage of cancer. Treatment modalities most commonly used are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, the disadvantage of radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the development of therapy related temporary and permanent adverse effects. Here a case of 42 years old male patient post hemicolectomy for adenocarcinoma of right colon who refused for chemotherapy, treated with Ayurveda medications having Rasayan, Jeevaniya, vatahara properties like Sanjivani vati which have shown remarkable results and also gained 8 kg weight during treatment is discussed here
TORCH Infection and Ayurveda Treatment: A Blessing to Infertility
Pregnancy and childbirth are the most important phases of a woman\u27s life. In India, approximately 15% of couples are affected by infertility. There are many reasons contributing to infertility and bad obstetric history (BOH), among which TORCH infection is most common. The overall TORCH infection rate was 61.1%, while 32% of neonatal mortality was associated with multiple TORCH infections. Women who have the ability to get pregnant but are unable to continue their pregnancy may also be considered infertile. According to Ayurveda, at the time of the formation of the foetus (Garbha), due to vitiated blood (Shonita), the product of conception expels repeatedly before attaining viability, which is known as Putraghni Yonivyapad. So it is important to achieve a full-term pregnancy with healthy progeny. It is evident that maternal infections play a vital role in the loss of pregnancy. In this article, a 28-year-old patient with two abortions earlier and a TORCH IgG positive was treated with pure herbal medicine for 4 months. The patient conceived after that and attended a full-term pregnancy. During the whole duration of pregnancy, Ayurveda medication for healthy growth and full-term delivery was also continued. Thus, this article represents an example of successful management of TORCH infection through Ayurveda and also emphasises the potential of herbal management in TORCH infection with medicines like dalachini churna, kuberaksha vati, sariva-manjistha phant, and Shatavari churna.
Guava leaf extract - Phytochemical therapy for periodontitis patients
Introduction: Periodontitis is one of the most prevailing diseases associated with the oral cavity. It is important to treat the disease effectively as it results in tooth loss and also affects the host extensively. Treatment of periodontitis includes various surgical and non-surgical modalities. Non-Surgical modalities include Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), Local Drug Delivery (LDD), laser and HMT therapy. In the present study, the effect of guava leaf extract gel as a local drug delivery agent for the treatment of chronic periodontitis is evaluated. Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the efficacy of guava gel extract as a local drug delivery agent in patients with periodontitis following scaling and root planing (SRP). Materials and method: A randomized, controlled study was conducted in 21 systemically healthy patients suffering from moderate periodontitis with isolated pockets (pocket depths 45mm). Clinical parameters GI, PI and PPD were recorded at baseline and subsequently after 7th, 14th and 21st day. The study design consisted of three groups, each group having 7 subjects, allocated in these groups randomly. Group A - Guava leaf extract gel (7), Group B – Chlorhexidine group (7), Group C - Control group (7). Results: Both the groups, Group A and Group B showed similar reduction in Gingival Index, Plaque Index and Probing Pocket Depth values when compared at baseline and on 21st day but the differences failed to reach the level of significance. Conclusions: The results suggest that Guava leaf extract gel as a local drug delivery is highly effective and comparable to gold standard.
Development and Evaluation of Lavangadi Vati in the Form of Suspension- A Polyherbal Novel Liquid Dosage Form
Introduction: The demand of the herbal medicine is increasing worldwide due to its lesser toxicity and side effects. Though so many formulations are there in ayurveda, the patient compliance for its palatability and acceptability need to consider. The present study focused on the modification of lavangadi vati into suspension, a liquid dosage form, which is effective in prana vaha sroto vikaras (disorders related to respiratory system) and standardising its quality parameters. Aims: To develop lavangadi vati suspension from the classical lavangadi vati dosage form and standardising the process by the evaluation of the micrometric properties, quality control parameters and TLC finger printing. Materials and Method: Among the six trials, the suspension containing lavangadi vati churna in a dose of 1gm/5ml and 4% sodium CMC as the suspending agent with a specific formula and using suitable excipients were selected as master formula. Result: As per the criteria lavangadi vati shown with particle size of 433.7nm, Haussner ratio with 1.06, Carr’s index about 6% and angle of repose with 28. 770.Lavangadi vati suspension shown a pH in the normal range about 6.28 and having high sedimentation range and good redispersibility. Both the vati and modified suspension almost shown similar bands in TLC. Conclusion: After the evaluation of the various quality control parameters, prepared suspension having appropriate properties of a standard suspension without deviating from the classical lavangadi vati formulation
Qualitative and quantitative analysis of siddha herbal Formulation Kabasura kudineer in various concentrations
Introduction: Siddha system is one of the ancient systems coming practised in southern part of India, North and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka. The Siddha medicines are categorised as Aga marundhugal (Internal Medicine) and Pura marundhugal (External Medicine).One among them is kudineer (Decoction). Kabasura kudineer chooranam (KSK) is a polyherbal formulation and it contains 15 ingredients. It is indicated for Iyyasuram and it used for fever with Respiratory disease. Objective and Methods: To analyse the presents of different phyto constituents, develop HPTLC fingerfrint and quantify the amount of phenols and alkaloids in Kabasura Kudineer prepared at 1/4 (sample A), 1/8 (Sample B) and 1/16 (Sample C) reduction concentrations. Result: Phytochemical analysis of Kabasura Kudineer revealed the presence of alkaloid, phenol, flavonoid and tannin in Sample A, B and C. The Rf value obtained by TLC and HPTLC fingerprint for Sample A are 0.02, 0.04, 0.79, Sample B is 0.04, 0.80 and Sample C is 0.04, 0.43, 0.051 and 0.71. The amount of Alkaloid present in Sample A, B, C 1.61 ,1.03,1.44 and phenol present in Sample A, B, C 17.62 ,19.71,18.60 Conclusion: The Analytical parameters along with TLC photo documentation, HPTLC fingerprinting profile and UV Spectrophometer in various concentration of Kabasura Kudineeer are different in different reduction concentration ratio. Further specific chemical markers can be quantified using HPTLC and the therapeutic efficacy can be explored in further studies
Clinical Efficacy of Padabhyanga in Simple Myopia - A Pre-Test & Post-Test Study
Around 253 million people worldwide live with some form of visual impairment. The leading causes of vision impairment are uncorrected refractive errors (e.g., myopia) and untreated cataracts. Padabhyanga (foot massage) is known to promote Nidrakara (good sleep), Drishtiprasadana (improve vision), Shramahara (relieve fatigue), Deha Sukhakara (comfort to the body), and induce Pada Supthinut (sound sleep). There are two Pruthu Siras (large veins) in the central part of the foot that are directly connected to the eyes. Protecting the feet through Abhyanga (oil massage) and Dhavana (cleaning practices) is important for the overall well-being and protection of the eyes. Aim: To develop a simple and cost-effective remedy for simple myopia. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of Padaabhyanga with Moorchita Tila Taila (special sesame oil) in simple myopia. Method: Padaabhyanga with 20ml Moorchita Tila Taila at 400C on both feet for 14 days of 20 minutes duration. Results: A significant improvement in eyesight and eye-related problems in myopic disorder. Conclusion: This trial may provide evidence of the efficacy of the treatment in myopic syndrome.
Evaluation of Anti-vitiligo properties through an In-silico Computational screening of Selected Herbal Bioactive Components with the target protein Tyrosinase
Background: Vitiligo is one of the most hypopigmented disorders of the skin, it can be correlated with Swetha kuttam or ven kuttam or ven pulli mentioned in Siddha classical literature. Current therapeutic management available for vitiligo is only moderately effective in controlling further severity of symptoms. Hence in recent times, people rely most on alternative complementary treatments for the management of vitiligo. The research articles have shown the following bio-active compounds present in the selected herbs Kaempferol, Quercetin, Anacardic acid, Glabridin, Isovitexin, Aristolochic acid and Hydnocarpin which is already mentioned in the Siddha literature for the management of vitiligo(venkuttam). Objective: This research article attempts to carry out the molecular docking analysis of the chosen herbal bioactive components against the target enzyme Tyrosinase in Vitiligo. Methods: Docking calculations were done for the obtained bio-active compounds including Kaempferol from Indigofera aspalathoides(Vahl.), Quercetin from Smilax china(Linn.), Tinosporide from Tinospora cordifolia(Willd.)Hook.f.&Thoms, Anacardic acid from Semecarpus anacardium (Linn.), Glabridin from Glycyrrhiza glabra(Linn.), Isovitexin from Psoralea corylifolia (Linn.), Oleic acid from Nigella sativa(Linn.), Aristolochic acid from Aristolochia bracteolata (Lam.) & Hydnocarpin from Hydnocarpus laurifolia (Dennst.) Sleumer against Tyrosinase(PDB)-1WX3, the intended protein. Results: Nine bioactive compounds have been screened in total, the following leads as Quercetin, Glabridin, Isovitexin and Hydnocarpin which interact with target to form four interactions with 70–100% binding effectiveness with the protein – Tyrosinase enzyme. Conclusion: The computational analysis led to the conclusion that the bioactive molecules present in the chosen herbals had significant binding efficacy and may exert promising anti-vitiligo properties
Efficacy of Medohar Arka in Sthaulya (Overweight) – A single blind placebo controlled clinical study
In Ayurveda, Sthaulya is santarpanothha vyadhi caused by excessive accumulation of Meda resulting in pendulous appearance of Sphik, Udara and Stana. It can be correlated with overweight or obesity. Obesity is characterized by abnormal growth of adipose tissue due to enlargement of fat cell size or number which is expressed in BMI, 24.9 kg/m2 to 29.9 kg/m2 indicates overweight and >30 kg/m2 indicates obesity. Studies have been conducted on medications like medohar guggulu, navaka guggulu but Medohar Arka was relatively unexplored. It is a low cost medicine described by Ras Tantra Saara and Siddha Prayoga Sangraha for sthaulya. Material and Methods-Study comprised of 66 participants between age group of 20-50 years, either sex, having B.M.I. between 25-30 kg/m2. Group M was treated with Medohar Arka 15ml twice daily before food with equal amount of water whereas Group P was treated with Placebo 250 mg twice daily before food with equal amount water for 90 days. Pathyapathya and vyayama was advised to both groups in the form of Ahar (Diet) and Vihar(30 min brisk walk). Assessment was done on day 0 and day 90 (completion of treatment). Participants were assessed for objective parameters like Body Mass Index, Waist Hip Ratio(WHR) and Mid Arm circumference(MAC). On comparing both the groups, statistically significant improvement was observed in Body Mass Index, Waist Hip Ratio, Mid Arm circumference in Medohar arka group. Conclusion- Medohar Arka was effective in managing overweight. Further study could be conducted on obese patients for generalized use of this medicine
Anti- adipogenic actions of Cyperus rotundus L. in 3T3L-1 Cells
Obesity can be described as the "New World Syndrome". It is a multi-factorial disorder, which is often associated with many other significant diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, osteoarthritis and certain cancers. The management of obesity will therefore require a comprehensive range of strategies focussing on existing weight problems and obesity complications. Herbal drugs are an integral part of the traditional medicines due to presence of wide range of nature made bioactive compounds. Musta (Cyperus rotundus L.) is one such drug practiced for management of obesity in Ayurveda and other traditional system of medicines. The present study reports the cytotoxicity and anti-adipogenic effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of C. rotundus in 3T3L1 cell line at concentration 1, 10 and 100 μg /ml. MTT (3-(4,5-dimetrhylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium) assay revealed non-toxic nature of both extracts. Inhibition of lipid accumulation in cells was observed significant in ethanolic extract. Significant reduction in lipid accumulation at 100 μg /ml concentration was observed in ethanol extract sample. The anti-adipogenic effect of the Musta is attributed to the reduced expression of PPARg (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma), and increased expression of GLUT4 (Glucose transporter protein type-4) in 3T3 L1 cells as assessed by the RT-PCR. The Cyperus rotundus L. in ethanolic extract proves a potential herb for the management of obesity and related non-communicable diseases.
