An Innovative Ayurveda Approach to treat the Idiopathic Edema: A case report
Background: Idiopathic edema is a complex medical condition with limited understanding and challenging choices for treatment. Regarding the Ayurvedic care of idiopathic edema, there aren\u27t many published case reports or clinical trials on PubMed despite the disease\u27s widespread prevalence. In this case report, we propose an important Ayurvedic perspective that takes into consideration the exact location of the manifestation in addition to its origin while selecting methods to treat idiopathic edema. Methods: A 63-year-old male patient complained of persistent right leg edema and blackish discoloration for 18 months while he visited the outpatient department of Kayachikitsa Government Ayurved College & Hospital, Nagpur. In previous times, the patient had sought treatment from doctors who practiced modern medicine without receiving any improvement. The patient was diagnosed as having idiopathic edema after a comprehensive investigation of all possible causes and was then treated according to the Ayurvedic concept of Shoth, which is linked to the origin of Pakwashaya (gut). Along with oral medications, the treatment included Basti (a medicated enema). Results: Interestingly, the patient\u27s quality of life significantly improved, and the edema completely disappeared after the course of treatment. Conclusion: This case study provides insightful information on the importance of disease origin and manifestation sites in the Ayurvedic management of idiopathic edema. It also emphasizes the significance of further research on the role that the gut plays in the pathophysiology of idiopathic edema.
Physico-chemical Analysis of immune modulatory formulation R9 vati
Introduction: The concept of well-being has evolved to include health beyond disease absence. Rasayana refers to the nutritional essence reaching all body tissue components to nourish and replenish them. It enhances longevity, intelligence, health, youth, skin, voice, and motor and sensory strength. Rasayana herbs are used in decoctions or powder to achieve this, enhancing various dhatu (tissues) and promoting overall health. Ashwagandha, Pippali, Guduchi, and Yashtimadhu are herbs known for their anti-oxidant properties. Rasasindura, a rasashaudhi used to treat various illnesses, is a kupipakwa preparation with shuddha parada and shuddha gandhaka. These Rasaushadhi are effective in small doses and can enhance the efficacy of herbal drugs when added to formulations. Method: In this study a tablet (R9 vati) was prepared with and without rasasindura. The prepared samples were subjected to various physico chemical analysis. Observation and result: Increase in the value of Total ash, Alcohol and Water soluble extractive, uniformity of weight, Hardness, and decrease in the value of Loss on drying, Water soluble ash was observed in R9 vati prepared with rasasindura. HPTLC result shows 8 peaks in both samples of vati at Short UV, 6 peaks in both samples of vati at Long UV, and 4 peaks in both samples of vati at Post derivatization. Result of Microbial analysis shows absence of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in both the samples of vati.
Documentation on traditional medicine used for Menstrual Disorders among The Poumai-Naga Women in Senapati District, Manipur
Menstruation is a natural and biological phenomenon in women of reproductive age. It is often associated with certain disorders. Millions of women across the globe are challenged with social stigmas and taboos related to menstruation. This paper aims to assess and compare the menstrual health information between rural and urban areas and explore the herbal medicine used by the Poumai-Naga community to combat menstrual disorders. Respondents included 5 traditional medicine practitioners and 230 women. An interview and survey questionnaire were employed to meet the objectives. After cross checking from literature published in menstrual disorders from different states of India and abroad, nine medicinal plants were noted to be extensively used by the people. Rhododendron arboreum Sm. was not found to be reported in any of the literature to treat menstrual disorders. Results also showed that women heavily rely on and prefer traditional medicine and home remedies over modern medicine. Though Traditional Herbal Medicine is used globally, it may come with undocumented risks. And therefore, it is recommended to test and validate every potential herb passing through the proper channel for proper and safe use
A Practical and Analytical Study of Yoga Therapy Techniques for Back Pain
Background: Yoga has garnered considerable public interest and attention across various countries worldwide, frequently being suggested as a means to enhance one\u27s health. It encompasses more than mere physical exercises, incorporating a distinct philosophical outlook and psychological processes. This aspect is crucial when integrating exercises into today\u27s unique cultural milieus. Aim: To determine the effect of selected yoga postures in treating backache. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was chosen to substantiate the objectives of this study. Seven different postures were considered; eight respondents recorded their responses after the yoga therapy. A purposive sampling technique has been followed to acquire the data. The data were screened and analysed using a one-sample t-test to signify the effectiveness of the yoga postures. Moreover, ANOVA is used to analyse posture comparison and compute whether all participants obtained the same relief. Furthermore, twelve cohorts participated in an awareness seminar and took part in thirteen different treatments; the effectiveness of such treatments was gauged via t-test. Results: Significant levels of relief were identified. However, the extent of relief among participants was different. Conclusion: This study adds to the literature related to the effect of yoga in reducing back pain. The study results can be used to create awareness of providing conventional treatment substitutions
Evaluation of the physiological and pathological status of Stanya (Breast milk) based on the Ayurveda principles and Physico-chemical analysis- A Cross-sectional study
Background: In Ayurveda, Stanya Dosha was described by almost all Acharya stating the Dushti of breast milk which is not accepted by modern sciences as they perceived that breast milk is exclusively advised to all neonates and there is no such description to examine the abnormality of breast milk. As Ayurveda literature is Shaswat (eternal) which gives us a reason for the need to provide evidence or scientific explanation to support our literature. To make the world aware of Stanya Dushti, scientific evidences must be provided for other scientific systems to embrace the notion. Aim: To assess the quality of Stanya by examining its features as told in Ayurveda literature and its physicochemical properties. Objectives: To establish assessment criteria to assess Stanya Dushti through basic sciences. To assess the Stanya by observing the organoleptic property. Experiment with its physicochemical properties of protein estimation, viscosity, pH, value, and density. To assess the Dosha of breast milk by Jala pariksha(Dispersion method). Materials and methods: Observational study on breast milk of 60 lactating mothers collected from mothers coming for vaccination & OPD of MGACH&RC, PHC Salod, Wardha. Observation: 38.3% were Shuddha and 61.7% were Ashuddha with 11.7%Vatapitta, 25% Kaphapitta, 11.7%Vata, 5% Pitta,and 8.3% Kaphadominance. Mean values of pH, viscosity, density, and protein were found as 6.91, 1.64 cP, 1.02 gm/cc, and 1.72% respectively. Result: The breast milk of Shuddha stanya part was 38.3% and that of Dushti was 61%. The dominance of Dosha shows highly significance with Prakriti. The infants with Stanya Dushti show significant risks of developing clinical symptoms of GIT and the respiratory system
Establishment of quality and safety markers for the identification of Amomum seed and Cinnamon leaf
A crucial and essential prerequisite is the standardization of crude drugs for the purpose of authenticating their effectiveness, safety, and quality. To ensure the scientific significance of two traditional medicinal plants, standardization and quality assessment of two traditional medicines have been done in the current work. The Pharmacognostical evaluation, microscopy, HPTLC profiling, and safety assessment of Amomum subulatum Roxb seed and Cinnamomum cassia Blume leaf have been carried out. The evaluation was carried out by using standard World Health Organization (WHO) protocol along with HPTLC profiling of different extracts by developing suitable solvent systems. Microscopy has been carried out using advanced techniques. The quantitative estimation of harmful heavy metals and aflatoxins is also achieved by using prescribed protocol. The outcomes have been collated and set up in a tabular format for HPTLC profiling and physicochemical evaluation of Cinnamomum cassia and Amomum subulatum. Both the drugs underwent for safety assessment by estimating aflatoxin (B1, B2, and G1, G2) using HPLC, and heavy metals (Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic) by applying atomic absorption spectrometer, whereas pesticidal residue were estimated by using recommended GC-MS method the results have been compared with reference values and discussed, respectively. All the procedures repeated thrice and the average reading with standard deviation has been represented. The recommended standardization methods are valuable for ensuring the scientific significance of herbal drugs. The study demonstrated the microscopic cellular identification of both the plant species, TLC profiling is an acceptable technique to know the phytoconstituents present in particular extracts (polar or non-polar), whereas safety assessment by performing heavy metals, aflatoxins, and pesticide analysis which all collective work can be remarkable for ensuring the quality
A Siddha Management of Kaalaani (Corn Foot) using Uloga Suttigai (Heated Metal Cauterisation): A Case Report
Corn foot is nowadays a common skin problem among people who are subjected to pressure and constant friction from repetitive actions on their feet. It causes psycho-somatic stress on the affected individuals due to the changes in their walking style. On March 16, 2023, the client, a 46-year-old female, came to the Outpatient Department with complaints of thickened skin over the plantar aspect of the right foot, severe pain present while walking for 4 years, and another area of thickened skin appearing over the plantar aspect of the right big toe without pain for 1 year. Through clinical examination, the skin lesions were confirmed to be corn foot. After the diagnosis, the client was advised to do the surgical procedure, heated metal cauterisation (Uloga suttigai), as in Siddha. A heated metal robe was strongly held in one hand and applied over the periphery of the lesion site, then towards the center. Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. pulp was placed over the burn site. Using the surgical instruments, the burned tissue was removed until the healthy tissue became visible. Finally, the ulcerated area was cleaned with padikaara neer (alum water). Dressing was done with matthan thylam. After a regular bandage of the wound for a week, the corn foot completely healed, along with all related symptoms. The recurrence did not happen in the course of a one-year follow-up. To summarize, the case report exhibited that the heated metal cauterisation used in the Siddha is very effective in the management of patients with corn foot, relieving their stress at an affordable cost
A Novel Topical Approach Using Carica papaya and Cellulose Sulfate for STIs Management: A Promising Prevention and Treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections
Objective: This study explores the efficacy of a novel topical formulation containing Carica papaya extract and cellulose sulfate as a potential prevention and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The aim is to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of this combination and its safety for topical use in the prevention and treatment of common STIs. Materials and Methods:A topical formulation was prepared using Carica papaya extract and cellulose sulfate, chosen for their antimicrobial and protective barrier properties. The formulation was tested invitro against common STI pathogens, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Herpes simplex virus (HSV). Cytotoxicity assays were performed using human epithelial cells to assess the safety of the formulation. In addition, animal models were used to test the efficacy of the formulation in preventing infection. Results and Discussion: The in vitro results demonstrated that the combination of Carica papaya and cellulose sulfate effectively inhibited the growth of bacterial and viral STI pathogens. The formulation showed a significant reduction in infection rates in the animal models, particularly for Chlamydia trachomatis and HSV. Cytotoxicity assays revealed no significant adverse effects on human epithelial cells, indicating the safety of the topical application. The synergistic effects of the antimicrobial properties of Carica papaya and the protective barrier formed by cellulose sulfate suggest that this formulation could serve as an effective, non-invasive treatment option for STIs. Conclusion: The study demonstrates the potential of a topical formulation containing Carica papaya and cellulose sulfate for STI management. It offers a promising alternative for the prevention and treatment of STIs, with minimal cytotoxic effects and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity
Case Report: Effect of Physiotherapy and Asana on Scoliosis
Background: Scoliosis, characterized by a lateral curvature of the spine, often leads to functional limitations, pain, and impaired quality of life. Conventional treatment options include bracing, surgery, and physical therapy. Recently, the role of integrative therapies, particularly physiotherapy combined with specific yoga postures (asanas), has shown promise in managing scoliosis. Objectives: This case report explores the impact of a structured physiotherapy regimen alongside targeted asana practice on the spinal curvature, pain levels, and functional outcomes in a patient diagnosed with scoliosis. Methodology: The physiotherapy interventions focused on strengthening, mobilization, and postural corrections, while the asanas emphasized flexibility, balance, and alignment. Over the course of two months, objective measures, including Cobb angle and spinal range of motion, were assessed along with subjective parameters such as pain and quality of life scores. Results: Cobbs’s angle of patient was 12.9 degrees before treatment after treatment it reduces 8 degrees after 45 days of Intervention. Results indicated a significant reduction in pain, improved postural stability, and enhanced functional capacity. The findings support the potential of an integrative approach combining physiotherapy and asana in managing scoliosis, providing a foundation for further research and clinical application in scoliosis rehabilitation
An Ayurvedic Approach to Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy: A single patient study
Benign prostatic hypertrophy is benign enlargement of adenomatous part of prostate gland. It is present in patient in the 5th or 6th decade of the lives due to changes in the hormonal patterns in adult males chronic cripples the day to day activities. This is a case report of a 55 year male patient who presented with increased frequency of urination since past 5 months. Considering the symptom complex the case was diagnosed as a case of Vata astheela. The a course of ayurvedic medication such as Chandraprabha vati, Mustadi kalpa as internal medicine and lifestyle changes were advised for 4 months followed by a review after 7 months. The patient was also scored on measuring guidelines of which were seen to be promising
