Collocations and contextual semantics of the ethnonyms leiši and lietuvieši ‘Lithuanians’ in the text corpus of modern Latvian language

The aim of this paper is, by using Computational linguistics method to analyse collocations of ethnonyms leiši and lietuvieši ‘Lithuanians’ in “Balanced Corpus of Modern Latvian” (Līdzsvarots mūsdienu latviešu valodas tekstu korpuss), compare contextual semantics of both ethnonyms. Comparing the frequency of use of the lexemes lietuvieši and leiši ‘Lithuanians’ in the modern Latvian language text corpus, the prevalence of the ethnonym lietuvieši is evident, therefore, the ethnonym leiši, regardless of its use as synonymic designation (sometimes in one and the same text), can be considered as an obsolete word. The desemantisation cases of the ethnonym leiši, detected in the corpus, show its oldness and varied functionality in Latvian language. The evidences to prove the statement of the “Modern Latvian Language Dictionary” (Mūsdienu latviešu valodas vārdnīca) that the lexeme leiši nowadays “carries slightly pejorative stylistically expressive colouring” were not found in the text corpus. In general, the image of a Lithuanian reflected in the modern Latvian language text corpus is rather positive – mostly in historical, language, culture and sports contexts, yet in the context of economics and emigration rather negative impression of Lithuanians is expressed.Key words: corpus linguistics, semantics, ethnonyms, Lithuanians.doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/rh.v23i0.179

ON THE AUTHENTICITY OF TWO MYTHICAL FRAGMENTS DESCRIBED BY MATTHAEUS PRAETORIUS IN DELICIAE PRUSSICAE OR PRUSSIAN THEATER: RETOLD, RECORDED OR FICTIONAL?

The analysis of the pre-Christian Baltic culture, in the centre of which there is a pagan religious logic, reveals the issue of credibility of its records. Therefore, the article attempts to review and to verify mythical material directly related to fir tree and pear tree, described by Matthaeus Praetorius (Matthäus Prätorius) in his manuscript “Deliciae Prussicae or Prussian Theater” (Deliciae Prussicae, oder Preussische Schaubühne, the end of the17th century). In parallel with this, the article discusses interpretations by more significant researchers of the 19th–21st centuries who were concerned with Praetorius’s mythical material on fir tree and pear tree. The context of the researches of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries has shown that the researchers of earlier periods did not consider the question of reliability of Matthaeus Praetorius’s mythical material. The present research also allowed to trace the varying tendency of reliability of Praetorius’s described mythical data directly related to fir tree and pear tree.KEY WORDS: Matthaeus Praetorius, fir tree, pear tree, authenticity, Baltic religion and mythology.doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/rh.v22i0.163

The article by Ukrainian ethnomusicologist Marharyta Skazhenyk (Маргарита Скаженик) deals with winter rite tunes of the Middle Polissya, which are based on the rhythmic figure of the ascending Ionic. These melodies belong to the children’s repertoire. They are performed on the eve of the “old” New Year and are called “shchedrovki”. The variety of the rhythmic, pitch and composite embodiment of the rhythmic formula is determined by the location of the studied traditions on the periphery in relation to the main zone of its distribution (Ukrainian-Belarusian borderland in the Ubort river basin).Key words: “shchedrovka”, Middle Polissya, ascending Ionic, rhythmic form.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/td.v13i0.169

This article investigates the relationship between musicians and dancers in the mid-20th century village social dance tradition and the 21st century traditional dance club movement. The two dance trends are named the “first” and the “second” dance traditions in accordance with social folk dance classification used in Lithuania and internationally. The two traditions existed in different socio-cultural contexts, which had significantly determined their respective differences. Semi-structured interviews with 36 individuals and answers to an online survey from 45 respondents were used for comparative analysis, which explored the general attributes of the two dance traditions, as well as the differences in musician-dancer relationship and their causal relations. The analysis revealed several similarities between the traditions, yet most aspects are only partially similar or wholly different: the features of a good dancer and good musician are rather similar, but privileges attached to those positions are different; meanwhile, dance order and giving comments to the musicians are similar in both traditions. It was also exposed that the musician-dance relationship differences between the two traditions are most affected by the dance repertoire, remuneration for performances, professionalization of musicians, fulfilment of dancer’s wishes, and the group responsible for organizing dance events.Key words: ethnochoreology, dance anthropology, social dance, social folk dance, „first“ and „second“ dance traditions, traditional dance club movement, mid-20th century village dance tradition, dance repertoire, remuneration for performance, good dancer and good musician.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/td.v13i0.170

In this article is investigated ethnic musical and cultural identity of Dovydas Pivoriūnas, a third generation traditional fiddler of Lithuanian and Italian descent. He perceives it as (re-)creatable, connecting own primordial heritage with the ethnocultural knowledge and values discovered and chosen by himself (in the direction from USA to Lithuania and backwards). He pursues to (re-)create his ethnocultural identity as completed as possible and is feeling solid, very self and native, when is involved in the ethnic activities with members of one nationality, especially when is being in the native land of his grandparents. The core of Dovydasʼ ethnic musical identity is fiddle, hammered dulcimer and traditional dance music making. As Lithuanian community became dispersed, in 2005 Dovydas with his wife started consolidating them with Latvians and Estonians and founded a joint traditional music group “Baltic US”.Key words: Lithuanian-ness in the USA today, ethnic musical and cultural identity, traditional instrumental music making, Baltic dance music groups.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/td.v13i0.1701
