Health Care in Ghana: A Study of Health Care Opinion Leadership
Ghana is a developing sub-Saharan country in West Africa and it struggles with delivering health care within the universal health system. The primary barrier to medical care is the lack of access. The government of Ghana subsidizes universal health insurance for all of its citizens, but lacks technology, workforce, and more importantly access to sanitation and clean running water. Access to health care remains a challenge in Ghana, especially in rural areas. In this research, we studied opinion leadership for health care in Ghana using two surveys conducted in May, 2014. Student investigators administered a survey to explore who was identified as the health care opinion leaders by local community members. The respondents were asked to rank seven categories of health care providers by how often they spoke to the health care provider about their health, from most often to least often , including medical doctors, chemical sellers, herbalists, prayer camps, family members, midwives and shrines or voodoo priests. The study surveyed 157 respondents from local community members, including 51 people in cities, 65 people in rural villages and 41 people in Kpanla, a remote isolated island on Lake Volta. Student investigators also gave a self-designating survey to 61 health care providers to measure their health care opinion leadership. The results of these two surveys were consistent. Local community residents preferred to talk to medical doctors about their health care when medical doctors were accessible. Health care providers’ responses to the self-designating opinion leadership survey supported their strong opinion leadership for health care
Engaging Older Adults to Build Social Capital
Countries are considering the healthcare implications as the proportion of older adults increases, including rising healthcare costs and resources needed as more adults want to "age in place" or continue living in the community. More in home resources and support services will be needed for older adults to continue living independently at homes. Older adults are an incredibly untapped resource with a continuing need to contribute to society and a willingness to help others. Older adults are working longer than ever before, so they have the potential to build their own social capital for meeting the needs of aging colleagues. This paper will explore the changing demographics of older adults globally, examine the capacity and potential of older adults for providing in home resources and supportive services for other adults in needs, and discuss the health policy implications of engaging older adults to build social capital. Singapore will be used as an example for illustrating how building social capital among older adults could have a positive impact on older adults and Singaporean society
The Condemnation of the Italian State for Viola-tion of the Prohibition of Torture. Remarks on the Ruling passed by the European Court of Human Rights, Section IV, 7th April 2015, Application no. 6884/11, case of Cestaro v. Italy
This paper analyzes the European Court of Human Rights’ ruling in the Cestaro v. Italy case, focusing specifically on the conviction for violation of Article 3 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamen-tal Freedoms by Italian criminal law, whose framework does not recognize torture as a crime and does not provide instru-ments of deterrence to effectively prevent the execution and the recurrence of such acts. Currently, the Italian Parliament is discussing a draft amend-ment to the Criminal Code and aims to introduce the concept of torture as a crime; however, in the light of comments made by the European Court of Human Rights, this project questions whether the proposed solution will be able to prevent a repeat of events similar to those that occurred in 2001 after the G8 Summit in Genoa
Three Vessel Disease with Left Main Involvement: A Rare Manifestation of Takayasu’s Arteritis
Background: Takayasu’s arteritis is a chronic vasculitis of unknown etiology affecting large vessels. Coronary involvement is rare and myocardial infarction as a presenting symptom has only been described in case reports. Case: We report a case of a 19 year old female diagnosed with Takayasu’s arteritis 2 years prior who came in due to chest pain and heart failure symptoms. ECG showed diffuse ischemia with ST elevation of the inferior wall. Coronary angiogram showed 3 vessel disease with left main involvement. Patient was started on high dose steroids. She then developed an acute stroke in the right posterior cerebral artery territory. She improved with Methylprednisolone pulse therapy and oral methotrexate. She was discharged on Prednisone, Methotrexate and cardiac medications and is stable on follow up. Diagnostics: Coronary angiogram showed ostioproximal stenosis of the distal left main segment, the proximal left anterior descending artery and the proximal left circumflex artery, with the right coronary artery being totally occluded. Two dimensional echocardiogram showed an ejection fraction of 38 percent with multisegmental wall motion abnormalities. CT aortogram showed segmental narrowing of the infrarenal abdominal aorta with multiple ostioproximal stenosis of several aortic branches with extensive collateral formation. MRI showed acute infarction in the right thalamus, right medial temporal and occipital lobes and right cerebellar hemisphere and vermis Conclusion: Takayasu’s arteritis can present with a myriad of vascular complications. The reported incidence of coronary involvement is low. This case highlights the progressive and unpredictable nature of this disease. A high index of clinical suspicion, as well as a meticulous search for the extent of disease severity allows the clinician to individualize treatment options for these patient
The Development of VMeet based on Evaluation Result of Online Model Blended Learning with LMS Moodle in Universitas Padjadjaran
VMeet is software which is developed to facilitate video conference activity, equiped with account and user name. Currently, Unpad has had VMeet facilities that can be used by lecturers for learning activities. In order to implement VMeet in learning activities, it is required input data related to the opportunities and lecturers’ interest. The data used was based on the evaluation result of online learning process by applying VMeet trial. Besides LMS Moodle, at this time, Unpad also uses other softwares such VMeet, which is recently tested for managerial and then developed further for learning process. The result from four departments in Unpad, showed that VMeet had not yet performed effectivelly in online learning process. This due to technical factors, there were many obstacles in learning with VMeet, also many features that were overlap with LMS Moodle. Nevertheless, VMeet will continue to be tested broadly and optimal
Metahistorical Contexts of Demetillo’s Barter in Panay: An Epic
The Philippines, a treasury of oral folk epics, gives us opportunities to research epics in transition, which implies documenting epics and introducing them to a wider audience. The losing of living epic tradition attracts national and international attention, and becomes a concern of the state and the educational system. This study is focused on the metahistorical contexts of the epic Barter in Panay authored by Ricaredo Demetillo (1961) who gathered his materials from the Maragtas, a semi-historical, semi- legendary record of the Bornean settlement in Panay. The study is anchored to E.A. Manuel’s theory of Philippine ethnoepics. It aimed to prove the value of the text as an ethnoepic. Specifically, the study aims to answer: What is the narrative structure of the epic Barter in Panay? How the characterization and narration revealed the metahistorical contexts of the epic? How Barter in Panay is defined through its literary devices? Barter in Panay as an ethnoepic reflects the “sweetness and light†of the Filipino identity that lays me to embrace my unique genetic origin and rich traditions. The voice in the epic sketches the community beyond the spatial and projects itself into the future that will continue his legacy to the young who will listen to the tales. The epic contains historically self-aware characters providing an integral engine to the Filipino identity
A Mismatch between Curriculum Intentions and Textbook Design An Assessment of Mathematics Textbooks for Lower Secondary School in Kosovo
This paper discusses the functionality of mathematics textbooks for lower secondary school in Kosovo, as representations of the curriculum. A summary is given of the main orientations and aims of the current Kosovo curriculum for mathematics in lower secondary school. This is followed by an assessment of the level of implementation of the main curriculum objectives within textbook design and an analysis of the nature of the key elements of textbook content that enable curricular objectives to be met. These elements include the use of motivational factors, real and interdisciplinary application of mathematical concepts and content in the expository parts of the text, worked – out examples, the use of real and interdisciplinary contexts in the tasks for students to work through individually, problems and problem-solving procedures and strategies, as well as the inclusion of a range of individual and group learning activities. The results of the analysis indicate a huge mismatch between the main curriculum objectives and textbook design. The conclusion is that Kosovan students in lower secondary school are not given adequate opportunities for developing critical mathematical skills and abilities in accordance with the orientations of the national curriculum

Content Delivery – Auto or Manual? An Extension to Online Learning
Electronic devices are widely used in the content delivery and one of the most common practice is showing the slide using computer projection. However, it may not be the most effective way of course content delivery, in comparison to writing on board in real time. An action research is carried out to investigate the preference of showing slide versus writing on board. The survey results show that most student prefer writing on board teaching style as it is as easier to follow, less revision time is required after the lesson and etc. The implementation of writing on board in online learning is also presented. The online learning in this work does not require dedicated setup and the cost is kept to a minimum
An Alternative Infrastructure Optioneering Methodology Techno-Economic Assessment Tools for Urban Development Projects
Cities around the world are in transition seeking to achieve some level of sustainability and considering various low carbon and water sensitive urban renewal scenarios. This paper studies and compares the techno-economic assessment tools that can be used to identify and select alternative infrastructure options for urban water cycle systems, energy efficiency and generation, waste management and resource recovery in cities. The strengths and weakness of numerous decentralised technology options are investigated along with various assessment tools. An early and simplified assessment tool will be derived from various socio-technical and economic techno-assessment methods. The tool will then applied to the proposed Canning city centre project, an urban renewal project in the Perth metropolitan area of Western Australia
