    Virtual Machine Performance upon Intensive Computations

    The Virtual Machine (VM) technology has increased considerably within the last two decades and the performance of VMs seems closest to the host machine. This has motivated the use of VM in High Performance Computing (HPC). Running a scientific computation on VMs can severely impact the performance of applications. In addition, choosing the proper VM to run a specific application while minimizing the lost of performance is not an easy task. However, several virtualization solutions have been proposed. This paper presents the result of a comparison of the performance of the most commonly used VMs solutions: OpenVz, Linux-Vserver, LXC, XEN, KVM and VMware ESXi. The performance of these VMs are evaluated with the NAS benchmark, Lmbench, IOzone and Intel ® MPI Benchmark taking into account the consumption of resources such as CPU, memory, latency, disk and network communication. The result shows that some virtualization solutions present better performance in consumption of some of the previously mentioned resources than others. This work aims at helping a scientist in selecting the VM suitable to compute a specific task without a significant overhead on applications performance

    Empowering Users to Game Development Platform for Visually Impaired Students

    Computer-exercise game is well served for visually impaired students to engage their physical and mental health exercises. However, these type of games are increasingly unchallenged for long-term usage due to apathy patterns and restricted contents. In this paper, we describe how such drawbacks can be avoided by offering the game development platform. The platform provides a service-based architecture, which empowers teachers to build or to customize numerous game designs for entertainment and learning purpose without jeopardy. Based on our evaluation study, we found evidence that teachers of visually impaired students are satisfied with the game development approach in terms of system reliability and software usability. In addition, the teachers also have very good perception in the aspects of trust, responsiveness, applicability, usefulness and enthusiasm toward the game development approach

    A Conceptual Framework for Barriers to the Recruitment and Retention of Rural CVD Participants in Behavior Intervention Trials

    Rural residents diagnosed with cardiovascular disease (CVD) or with CVD-related risks are underrepresented in behavioral intervention trials based on an extensive review of published studies. The low participation rate of rural residents weakens both the internal and external validity of published studies. Moreover, compared to urban residents, limited research exists to describe the unique barriers that limit the participation of rural residents in behavioral intervention trials.Objective: The purpose of this review is to identify a conceptual framework (CF) underpinning common barriers faced by rural CVD patients to enroll in behavioral intervention trials.Methods: We conducted a literature review using several electronic databases to obtain a representative sample of research articles, synthesized the evidence, and developed a CF to explain the barriers that may affect the research participation rate of rural residents with CVD or related risks.Results: We found our evidence-based CF well explained the barriers for rural CVD patients to take part in behavioral intervention trials. Besides contextual factors (i.e. patient, community and research levels), other common factors impacting rural patients’ intent to enroll are lack of awareness and understanding about behavioral trials, limited support from their healthcare providers and social circles, unfavorable attitudes, and the lack of opportunity to participating research.Conclusion and Implication of result: the findings demonstrate the evidence-based model consisting of interlinked multi-level factors may help our understanding of the barriers encountered by rural CVD patients participating interventions to promote behavioral change. The implication for researchers is that identifying and developing strategies to overcome the barriers precedes conducting studies in rural communities

    Effect of Nutrition Therapy Dates for Short Term Memory of Students at Elementary School 060 886 and 060 889

    Improving the ability of short-term memory can be a variety of things one of them with nourishing food and drinks that contain enough sugar to the body. Sugar is safe for children and can be directly used for metabolism, namely in the form of a disaccharide sugar. Dates have a fairly high sugar content and are generally derived from the type of glucose and fructose. The research objective was to determine the effect of nutritional therapy palm against short-term memory fourth grade students in Elementary School No. 060 886 060 889 Elementary School and Medan. Quasy experimental research design using pre post design. There are two groups of respondents, intervention and control. Purposive sampling technique. In the intervention group were given nutritional therapy dates every day 100 g for 6 days. On the first day before the given therapy short-term memory measured using the test digit span forward and backward Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) after 15 seconds a child was told to repeat. On the day after consuming the nutrients dates -6 done the same test (post-test). In the control group was also done the same thing only difference was not given nutritional therapy dates. Analysis of the data used paired t test and independent t test. The results showed the average short-term memory after the students in the intervention group were given nutritional therapy dates = 25.33 seconds, SD = 20.61 seconds. The average short-term memory sisiwa posttest control group = 43.18 seconds, SD = 50.41 seconds. Mean difference = 17 850 seconds. Statistical test results obtained value of p = 0.041 (<0.05), it can be concluded that there are significant differences posttest score in the intervention group and the control (no treatment effect Nutri palm against short-term memory

    3-Level Integrated Telemedicine Network for Improving Healthcare Access to Rural India

    In a country like India, with its huge population, diverse landmass and where there is a shortage of qualified health workers and specialists in rural areas, telemedicine is going to be the most optimal solution to deliver expert advice from a central part to remotest corners of the country. In addition, as Indians spend most of their out-of-pocket health expenses on travel and accommodation in order to receive specialty treatments, Telemedicine will turn out to be the cheap and fast, as well as bridge the rural–urban health divides. With its huge strides in the medical field and expertise in ICT, India holds a great promise to become a leader in the field of telemedicine. There have been various efforts by disparate entities like ISRO, C-DAC, DRDO, and Apollo Hospitals and so on, which now needs a uniform, coordinated efforts and a larger participation from other players in the field of medicine and ICT.     Natural Products as Sources of Potential Antiamyloidogenic Agents

    Natural products have played a dominant role in the discovery of leads for the development of drugs aimed at the treatment of human diseases. Moreover, they may serve as lead compounds for the synthesis of potential therapeutic agents against several diseases. In this study, we present an integrated approach towards the evaluation of the antiamyloidogenic activity of isolated components from the stigmas of saffron, combining isolation of bioactive components from saffron, real-time in vitro screening for noncovalent association with Aβ by ESI MS and cell viability assays. This is a suitable approach for selecting compounds for the ensuing in vivo studies, and it may provide insights into the design and synthesis of novel compounds for the prevention, or treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)

    Useful Activities for Improving the Attitudes and Characteristic of Student Groups in Programming Course

    In a programming course, lectures were given using a slideshow, and syntax and example programs from a textbook were explained. Afterward, students received worksheets with example programs and problems for practicing syntactic elements, and the professor explained the worksheets. The students then performed an exercise where they created a program based on example programs as an assignment. They were instructed to finish as much of their program as possible during class and to submit their program file and a report file over an e-learning site. They could learn either in class or through lecture slides uploaded to an e-learning site. Students' attitudes were assessed before and after the course. The attitudes and activities were analyzed with cluster analysis. Useful activities for improving the attitudes in a programming course were found by chi-square analysis of cross-tabulation of attitude and activity clusters. Principal component analysis of attitudes was conducted. Students were classified based on principal components of attitude scores. Characteristic of student groups is explained. The findings are reported in this paper

    Interpreting the Interpersonal Grammatical Metaphor in Nobel Speeches in Literature

    This paper intends to analyze the use of interpersonal grammatical metaphor in Nobel Speeches in Literature. 29 speeches are downloaded from the Nobel official website as data. The occurrences of the metaphors of mood and metaphors of modality are counted, summed up, and listed; the frequencies of each are calculated as well. Our research results show that interpersonal grammatical metaphor does exist in these speeches and indicate that the metaphors of modality are used more widely than metaphors of mood in speech style. They serve such functions as helping the speakers convey their thoughts successfully and making the thoughts be accepted by audience easily

    Challenges of Interior Decoration Using Low Formaldehyde-Emitting Materials in Taiwan

    Regardless of material regulations at the supply source or post-construction quality inspection systems, certain levels of model management systems have been developed. However, in the hospital waiting room, the measured formaldehyde concentration in the air reached 0.99 ppm, which is 12 times higher than that of the standard value. The formaldehyde emission rates measured in the building materials of the private housings or hospital waiting room ranged from 158 to 238 μg/m2∙h, which exceed both the ABSL and BSMI standards. Moreover, the decoration locations, construction staff, and construction behaviors varied despite their claims of using low formaldehyde-emitting materials. This study compiled the current objectives and regulations established by various supervising authorities and implemented a supporting management system in material grading, amount of material usage, ventilation path control, and ventilation effectiveness for facilitating the promotion of healthy indoor air quality, thereby enhancing public health
