Archaeology versus Urban Development in Cartagena

    No full text
Archaeology has taught us what our origins are, but frequently it works in an independent way, avoiding any kind of collaboration with other disciplines such as Urban Development. Most often, archaeologists, managed by different government bodies, tend to work independently of urban planners. This system has led to archeologists getting the recognition for their discoveries while at the same time depriving society of the knowledge of the cities origin. As a consequence, urban development cannot fulfill its role. The fact that archeological and urban development projects are carried out separately is the main reason for the absence of any relationship between current town planning in the cities and old and buried urban planning. As a result, society is the loser in a battle in which there are no winners. In Cartagena (Spain), Pedro A. San Martín (1921-2013), an architect, a member of the Department of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture, Local commissioner of Archaeological Excavations and Director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena, developed a multi-layered approach (technical and urban) in the pursuit of one central objective: the revaluation of the city in its entirety. He tried to be an architect among archaeologists, learning the methods and ways in which archaeologists worked, and also an archaeologist among architects, trying to explain to them how they had to coordinate their discoveries in order to achieve a viable relationship between the old and the new city in Cartagena. His efforts are a great example of how both disciplines should be combined

A Framework for the Implementation of Secure Bare-Based Web-Email System

    No full text
Webmail systems have being developed fordifferent OS-based platforms. These OS-based systemspresent their own benefits and treats. Framework and whitepapers for developing these systems are available but there isno specific framework available for the implementation ofsuch systems on Bare PC. Implementation of such systems ona Bare PC poses daunting challenges and innovativeopportunities that are revolutionary in server designs.Building such systems for security could even be morechallenging. Secure Webmail systems are complex, large andrequire intricate components to develop. As a result, a leansystem was developed for this research. The lean concept alsohelps to build small protocol suite, intertwining of protocols, limited requirement space, simple user interfaces andminimal design options. The paper provides a detailframework for the design and implementation, experimentalsetup and the results of experiments conducted. Performanceis evaluated by measuring the processing time, throughput, the CPU Utilization and load distribution. The results showthat the performance of the Bare PC Webmail server issignificantly better than that of the OS-based servers

Security Awarness Program for Customers Using Online Banking

    No full text
Due to the increasing demand on electronicpayments, fraud methods are also increasing which has resultedin the loss of millions of dollars worldwide each year in thebanking sector. Several studies have been conducted to counteragainst fraud in the banking domain and to come up with waysto secure online payments. None of these studies, however, have resulted in a comprehensive awareness program which targets customer banking. The purpose of this research is to propose an awareness program, Information Security Awareness Program, dubbed ISAP. We believe that such a program is needed for the following reasons: a) in order to enhance the level of trust in online banking, b) to protect each customer’s personal information and c) to comply with the online bank requirements. We have identified several online frauds, and then we recommended some best practices for online protection in the following areas: online shopping, online protection, password protection, operating system protection, identity theft protection, and debit/credit card protection

The Ontology and Developmental Root of the First-Person Perspective

    No full text
Many philosophers take for granted the distinction between the first-person and third-person perspectives. They employ this distinction in a variety of philosophical debates including those concerning self-consciousness, phenomenal properties, subjectivity of phenomenal consciousness, and conceivability issues. This paper aims to explore the developmental root of the distinction in question. Through several analyses, the paper attempts to show that infants in the early childhood are exposed to cognitive, behavioral and experiential processes that are constitutive of the first-person perspective. The striking conclusion that can be derived from the analyses is that the first-person perspective is not possessed inborn. Rather, it gradually develops through certain experiential processes and interaction with other human infants in the early childhood. This potentially implies that if conditions had been properly designed, infants would have possessed an “inter-subjective self†that lacks the first-person perspective as we traditionally know. The paper additionally hints that serious philosophical consequences occur if the above conclusion is tru

An Ethical Assessment of Human Enhancements based on Michael J. Sandel’s Ethics of Giftedness

    No full text
Having found the familiar moral vocabulary about ethics, bioethics, or moral philosophy inadequate to address philosophical challenges like genetic engineering or human enhancements, Michael J. Sandel proposes his ‘ethics of giftedness’ to find out what is exactly at stake in the biotechnological debates on these issues. The central focus of the paper is to analyse the validity of Sandel’s “Ethics of Giftedness†argument and to investigate the viability of the normative significance of human nature. In the first part, we analyse the reasons for Sandel’s unease with human enhancements, which led him to appeal to the ethics of giftedness. We discuss and evaluate how human enhancements affect three main features of the moral landscape, namely, humility, responsibility, and solidarity. The second part constitutes a critical investigation of Sandel’s giftedness argument from various perspectives by examining the viability of Sandel’s ethics of giftedness only to propose that Sandel’s argument is likely to become more forceful if it leaves space for the inclusion of the distinction between the “gift†and the “given.†Finally, based on Sandel’s concerns about human nature that are likely to be affected by human enhancements, we investigate whether human nature has any normative significance in the ethical appraisal of human enhancements, and we argue for the latter based on human vulnerability that is an inevitable and distinctive property of human nature

The Role of Syllable Representation in Korean Script A Connectionist Modeling

to understand the syllable representation in Korean script ‘Hangul’, modeling study was conducted. Two types of models were constructed by the existence of syllable representation. These models were trained and tested through the same stimulus list. As the result, whereas the model, which did not have the syllable layer, can only simulate the word frequency effect, the model, which had the syllable layer, can simulate the both of word frequency and syllable frequency effects. This result proposed the syllable representation contributed the stabilization of representation

Interfirm Structure and Buyer-Salesperson Behavior Impact on Relationship Outcomes

    Get PDF
The individual level interaction between the buyer and salesperson can best be understood in the broader framework provided by the inter-firm relationship. Very little research has been conducted that examines both firm level and interpersonal level constructs in the context of business relationships. The primary purpose of this study is to design and test a theoretical model that examines the effect of inter-firm structure and buyer-salesperson behaviors on relationship outcomes. The results suggest that in established relationships, the external environment plays a role in determining the how buyer-seller firms structure their relationships. The way in which the relationship is structured plays an important role in determining how the buyer and salesperson interact. Both inter-firm structure and buyer-salesperson behaviors, in turn, influence buyer satisfaction

Optimation of Energy Efficiency by Integrated Design of Folding Wall-BIPV and Users Behaviour in Office Building at Surabaya

    No full text
Efficiency of BIPV measured by comparing electricity output and electricity demand. Electricity output generized by BIPV depends on the amount of solar radiation received by PV panel. Some factors that affect the amount of radiation received are the tilt angle and the orientation angle of PV panel. This research try to rise electricity output by collaborating this factor with orientation principle in folding concept. The collaboration results in bigger surface area to receive radiation. Meanwhile, the reducement of electricity demand will be described in relation with users behaviour, both individual behaviour and communal behaviour. As the object taken in this research is an office building, communal behaviour will take more impact to reduce energy demand. Policies and strategies related to energy efficiency made by central operational management in office building will control communal behaviour

This study aims to determine the factors that affect the performance of mutual funds, especially equity mutual funds. There are several factors that considered affect the performance of mutual funds such as: Asset Under Management (AUM), fund age, past performance, asset allocation, Turn of the Year effect, equity funds with blue chip or non-blue chip stocks, equity funds owned by insurance or non-insurance, external factors such as the rupiah against the US dollar (exchange rate), and investors behavior factor. In this study the researchers have collected data from January 2008 to December 2014. For the purpose of the study the researchers have selected 30 sample of equity mutual funds are still active from 2008-2014. The results are processed using Sharpe ratio to measure the magnitude of risk premium for each unit of risk taken. The result shows that all variables has significant influence on the performance of equity mutual funds. Partially, Asset Under Management (AUM), fund age, asset allocation, Turn of the Year Effect, exchange rate, and investor behavior have significant influence on the performance of equity mutual funds. While another variables such as past performance, Blue Chip and Non-Blue Chip Mutual Funds and insurance and non-insurance company don’t have significant influence on the performance of equity mutual funds in Indonesia. All of variables studied have great contribution on the performance of equity mutual funds. This finding can guide the investment managers in formulating an appropriate investment strategy for investors who want to put their funds into equity funds. This finding can guide the investment managers in formulating an appropriate strategy for investors who want to put their funds into equity funds. Through this study also the authors give a recommendation about the optimal portfolio strategy for the investors.
