Not Very Welcoming: A Survey of Internationally Educated Nurses Employed in Canada
Get PDFCountries around the world are struggling to cope with a shortage of nurses and are increasingly relying on internationally educated nurses to fill the gap. Internationally educated nurses represent 9% of the Canadian nursing workforce, but this is expected to grow as the shortage continues. This study aimed to identify and understand the experiences of internationally educated nurses who came to Canada to seek nursing work. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of a random sample of internationally educated nurses was conducted. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the survey responses. The survey also included an open-ended question about experience with the move to Canada to work as a nurse. Responses to the open-ended question were content analyzed and triangulated with the survey data. Results: A total of 2,107 internationally educated nurses responded to the study (47% response rate). Most were female (95%) and married (80%), and almost half were from the Philippines (49%). Professional (e.g., salary & benefits, 60%) and personal (e.g., quality of life, 56%) reasons drove migration to Canada, but 76% reported no recruitment incentives, and most (56%) relied on friends and family for information about nursing in Canada. Significant barriers to practicing in Canada included the licensure exam (75%), and obtaining information about different types of practice in Canada (56%). Conclusions: The findings from this study provide important information about internationally educated nurses’ perceptions and experiences of coming to Canada to obtain work in nursing. Improving the means for seeking employment by overseas nurses is a key area that regulatory agencies, health managers and policy leaders need to understand and address. Strategies to improve the barriers nurses face, particularly those related to licensure are important considerations

Get PDFThe term, Mental Optometry, is newly developed concept that can be used to describe the interplay between mind, brain, and sensory interpretations. Taken from the premise of behavioral optometry and research explaining body orientation to physical field of vision, what we see or perceive with our mind’s eye, emotions and behaviors will also follow in the same manner. While not explicitly referred to in such a manner, cognitive, cognitive behavioral, and cognitive bias formation theories imply such a concept as being foundational to their systems. Mental Optometry arms the theorist and practitioner with a neurobiological empowered understanding of mood, emotion, thought, and interpretations of visual stimuli such that therapeutic interventions can be developed to assist patients in recognizing and altering skewed interpretations of what they think they see (the mind’s eye) – imagery that may deleteriously support negative cognitions leading to negative mood states
The Influence of Health Information Orientation, E-Health Literacy, and Anxiety on Health Behavior among Parents with School Age Children: Focusing on MERS Prevention Behavior
Get PDFThis study was conducted in order to examine how health information orientation, e-health literacy, and anxiety influence MERS-related health behavior in parents with school age children. A total of 146 subjects living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were used as valid data. According to the results, the parents’ socio-economic status such as education level and monthly income level, health information orientation, e-health literacy, and MERS-related anxiety explained about 15.4% of variance in MERS infection prevention behavior. In particular, e-health literacy and anxiety about MERS infection in themselves and their families were found to be the most influential factors. Based on these findings, interventions should be designed to manage people’s e-health literacy and anxiety in response to the outbreak of an unknown infectious disease like MERS
The Financial Collapse of Local Bodies: the Case of the Municipality of Taranto
Get PDFThe present work aims to offer a contribute for the evaluation of the opportunity to adopt strategies based on state support or, alternatively, on the managerial autonomy of local bodies in financial trouble. The research, after analyzing the main guidelines at European level and mentioning possible solutions currently laid down in Italian legislation, presents the results of an empirical investigation on the economic effects produced on the local economy by the collapse of the Municipality of Taranto. The choice of the city of Taranto is due both to the significant magnitude of the ascertained debt, which was one of the highest in the history of Italy, and to the considerable economic effects caused by the recovery procedure. Specifically, have been firstly examined the reasons which led to the collapse of the local public authority and the main aspects characterizing the administrative management of the passive mass besides the possible solutions for the definitive implementation of the recovery plan
Impact of Microcredit on Gendered Poverty: Women’s Participation in Urban Microcredit Programs at Slum Areas of Dhaka City, Bangladesh
Get PDFThis paper examines the impact of microcredit on gendered poverty and wellbeing in selected slum areas of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. It is a qualitative and feminist epistemological study that used triangulation of data using in-depth-interview, focus group discussion and participatory rural appraisal. The testimonies of participants were the heart of the study to explore women’s lives experiences. Such testimonies have not been used in many similar studies. It appears that microcredit programs do not create opportunities for the majority of women because men’s presence at home constrains women from participating in paid livelihood. Overall, it can be said that microcredit has limited capacity to alleviate poverty but it contributed to keeping poverty only at a tolerance level by affecting one or two of the most significant wellbeing indicators

The post liberalization period has seen a tremendous growth in India's corporate sector with lakhs of companies emerging and running successfully. According to Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the total number of registered companies in India stood at 13, 94,819 in March 2014. There are about 1 l, 235 companies listed in RSE while the number of companies listed on BSE is 5,626. The rest are unlisted companies. These numbers prove that Indian companies have increasingly been able to access newer and larger markets around the world. The reason is that India has become one of the fastest emerging nations to have aligned itself with the international trends in Corporate Governance. This article focuses on the need for Independent Directors in the Indian context. The evolution of Institution of Independent Directors and its impact has been discussed as well. Authors have also made an attempt to enlist the strengthened role of Independent Directors under the Companies Act, 2013

The more pluralist democracies, which are open to several competing interests, witness higher degree of interest groups functioning. Such ubiquity, however, is coupled with an increasing crisis in terms of declining public legitimacy, transparency and accountability. As a global practice, legal regulation is employed as the fundamental approach to bring the requisite transparency and legitimacy to the lobbying process. India, as a transitional political economy, witnesses substantive deterioration in its public sphere and legislative activity. Lobbying comes across as a taboo in debates around the workings of the Indian polity. The paper proposes recognition and regulation of lobbying as the next generation reform to revive the declining standards of policy debates

This paper examines the interplay among these seemingly distinct variables in a society marked by such sensitive issues as hunger, unemployment, injustice, political brigandage, massive corruption and profligacy. Cloud computing can help us to create a platform for delivering cloud services to teachers, administrators, and students, and can also assist us to connect with other clouds and automate management tasks. In this research work we are introducing our architecture of Cloud Computing for education and discuss the impact of our chosen architecture on learning. We are presenting here and demonstrating the advantages and impact analysis of our proposed architecture.Â
