Use of switching barriers to retain customers: Online retail stock traders in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
Why some customers decide to stay withexisting service provider after having thought of switchinghas apparently not been examined adequately in extantresearch. The purpose of this research is to identifyfactors relevant to building constructs to representswitching barriers in online retail stock trading industryin Hong Kong. Review of extant literature, development ofa questionnaire and focus group interviews are the threeprincipal methods used for this research. Four factors thatare relevant for measuring switching barriers areidentified: two positive barriers involve service recoveryand trust and two negative barriers relate to higherswitching costs and lack of attractive alternatives

Student Learning Outcomes Accomplishment through Design Project

In accreditation process, it is tremendously challenging in meeting all the SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) in a pure engineering course, as the SLOs generally consists of more than 50% of non-engineering attributes that to be cultivated for engineering graduate.  A pedagogy approach in supporting engineering courses to accomplish the SLOs that involves humanity, social science, management and economy is proposed and implemented in this work through design projects

Abstract—This study identifies the level of intellectual quality of pre-university students in Malaysia. A mixed method approach is adapted to acquire data and information from the samples and informans. A total of 500 sixth form pre-university students from 38 secondary schools in Penang was selected quantitatively. Classroom observations of pre-university classes of 8 students from 8 schools in Penang were done to obtain information for qualitative method. Data analysis using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used. The research findings show that the intellectual quality of pre-university students is at a moderate level with girls showing higher intellectual level than boys for all six dimensions of intellectual quality. Meanwhile, the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Problem Solving Skills dimensions have the most number of students at a high level compared to other dimensions. The study also showed that the students who major in religious studies  shown a higher  intellectual quality for all dimensions compared to those who major in science and arts. Information gain through qualitative study also found that students shows an interest in learning the subject when the teachers integrated the usage of ICT during teaching and learning session. This enhanced the students to apply HOTS as well as Problem Solving Skills.  Information gathered through this study will provide new understanding and knowledge to teachers and researchers related to intellectual thoughts and pedagogical practices that can be used to improve sixth form pre-university students intellectual quality and hence help improve students' intellectual capital to keep abreast with the rapid developing country in the 21st century

Experimental Study of Alumina Nanofluids Effects on Thermal Performance Efficiency of Flat Plate Solar Collectors

    No full text
Flat-plate solar collectors (FPSC) heaters are widelyutilized for heating water in residential buildings and othercommercial and industrial applications. The maindisadvantage of solar water heater is their low efficiency.Improving the thermal characteristics of the working fluid insolar water heater can dramatically increase its thermalefficiency. The aim of the present experimental investigation isto study the effect of using Alumina nanofluids as a workingfluid for the solar water heater on its efficiency. Triton X-100(Iso-Octyl Phenoxy Polyethxy Ethanol) was used as asurfactant and its stability and aggregation of the suspensionwas investigated. Outdoor experiments have been carried outin New Borg El-Arab city, Alexandria, Egypt according toASHRAE Standard 86-93. Two similar water heaters systemsusing pure water and the nanofluids were tested at the sametime, locations and similar conditions. The results showed thatusing nanofluid of 0.15% Alumina particles improves theFPSC thermal efficiency by 18%. More than concentration ofsurfactant were tested and the results showed that more stablenanofluid could be prepared to employ suitable surfactantconcentration and by sophisticating preparation protoc

China-US Trade in Advanced Technology Products

This paper explores the performance of China in exporting advanced technology products to the United Statesduring the 2002-2015 period. Advanced technology products include about 500 products representing lead- edge technologyand cover 10 broad groups. Findings reveal that China’s exports of high-tech products to the United States are heavilydominated by information & communications products and opto-electronics. Notable product groups for which China has acomparative disadvantage are aerospace and life science products

Citizen journalism: A South Asian perspective

    No full text
With the rise of internet literacy in the world, ordinary people are increasingly participating in the news media more than ever before. A common conception of the influence of citizen journalism imbues the news practice with an almost messianic ability to save both journalism and democracy. Analyzing the characteristics of news by ordinary people, this paper discusses the phenomenon of citizen journalism from the perspective of South Asia. The paper reveals that, whist their coverage of news includes a wide range of news issues, citizen journalists from South Asia focus more on political issues, and are determined to uncover misconduct by public officials. There are also visible trends toward collective news practices in the activities of marginalised groups. The main focus of citizen journalism is on issues of public concerns, promoting a diversity of political views

Traditionally, public sector agenciescommunicate to their publics to inform and resolveconflicts. By using a review of the literature, this studydescribes broadening the role of public sectorcommunications by moving beyond a traditional publicaffairs model to a more collaborative public relationsmodel utilizing two-way symmetrical communications.Technology and social media in today’s society can be anasset to public agencies in terms of communications thatallow for a collaborative model. Results of the studyillustrate public sector agencies using two-waysymmetrical communications can build strongerrelationships with their publics that can benefit theagency and their publics in building and maintainingcollaborative long-term relationships

This paper addresses the microstructure of Central European public financial markets. The aim of the paper is to justify the development and potential of high frequency trading (HFT) on transition economies regulated markets. The regression analysis is applied over neighborhood economies. The data consists of 642 firm-year observation over years 2010-2012. The evidences show that there is lack of responsiveness of the return on equity towards the stock exchanges co-location

A Review of Studies on Teachers’ Roles and Their Limitations in PBL Presentation Context

    Get PDF
At all levels of learning and teaching, it is known that teachers play important roles. A teacher’s role may be determined and studied from the functions he performs in different activities. These roles are often stereotyped but under the problem-based learning mode, they are flexible and deserve new studies since the transformation of the teaching and learning model entails a fundamental change of teacher role. As numerous research has been done on teachers’ roles, this paper intends to carry out a literature review of these studies and sort out the possible limitations in problem-based learning environment

Examining the Key Variables in Foreign Language Learning—A Case Study

    Get PDF
Learning variables such as motivation, aptitude, attitude, learning strategies, personality and learning environment are deemed by English Language Teaching (ELT) researchers as crucial in contributing to a learner’s language achievement. This study focuses on the interrelated nature of these variables and examines how they affect language learners’ learning outcomes. The main purpose of this study was to find out about the complex network of these variables as well as the individual differences among learners. The data for this study were collected through interviews. The participants were seven Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners who were residing in Canada. The study has yielded a number of interesting findings. One notable finding is that there seems to be some intricate interrelationships between learner characteristics (e.g., perseverance, attitude, motivation) and learner achievement. It appears that the role that learner perseverance and inner drive to learn play in their learning outcomes is as equally important as their learning environment and aptitude. Another conspicuous finding is that a correlation seems to exist between aptitude, motivation and success. Specifically, the higher aptitude learners exhibit, the more highly motivated they become and in turn, the more success they are likely to attain. The pedagogical implications from the study lies in the need to inform EFL teachers of the intricate interrelationships of the learning variables to help them better understand the complexities underlying the language learning process and enhance teacher training in how to make their teaching more truly communicative in nature
