Private Equity-Backed Firms’ Corporate Strategy: An Explorative Study from a Dynamic Capability Perspective
Get PDFThis paper explores the case of Toys “R†Us in order tounderstand the strategy of private equity-backed firms. It is a firstattempt to investigate the target firm’s strategy from a dynamiccapability perspective. The paper shows that the acquired firmmobilizes resources after acquisition in order to improve itscompetitive strategy within the traditional business. The paperconfirms that the concerns about leverage buyouts areexaggerated because the acquired firm mobilizes resources togenerate long-term growth. Moreover, the paper discussespossible improvements of the corporate strategy implemented byprivate equity-backed firms. After acquisition, private equitymanagement could help push the target firms into developing theresource potentialities in the direction of their diversification.Future quantitative researches could verify the results of thisqualitative work on a larger sample
Cultural and Intuitive Intelligence of SME’s Leaders

For SME’s to be considered a success with thecontinuation of global processes the skills and competencies ofthe individuals determining the final verdict will ultimately bethe decision makers. The following study examines individuals tosee whether or not cultural intelligence (CQ) and intuitiveintelligence (IUQ) will improve once included in their SME’scurrent international process. In 2015 a survey was issued inSwitzerland, of which a total of 75 were returned. The surveyswere then sifted through to make sure that they were completed,of all the surveys 53 were finished and eligible to be used for theanalysis. Pinpointing the gist of the empirical study it can beshown that the cultural intelligence profile and the decisionsmade by SME’s leaders will end up having a higher – but notsignificantly higher – level of these leaders’ intuitive intelligence(IUC) and a significantly higher level of cultural intelligence(CQ)

Breast cancer knowledge and participation in breast screening practices among Southeast Asian women living in Sydney
Get PDFObjective: This study explores the factors that influence breast-screeningparticipation in Southeast Asian (SEA) women living in Sydney. InternationallySEA women have displayed low participation in breast screening due to a lack ofgeneral breast cancer knowledge and knowledge regarding available screeningpractices. Ethnicity, socio-demographic and acculturation variables often shapeperceptions regarding preventative health behaviour (breast screening) andimpact on health belief measures, however the influence of these variables in anAustralian setting is unknown.Design: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted on a sampleof 183 SEA women specifically Filipino, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. Dataon socio-demographic variables, knowledge and participation in breastscreening were analysed using quantitative techniques in SPSS.Result: Filipino women demonstrated more knowledge than the other threeethnicities; however all ethnic groups demonstrated poor to average knowledgeregarding breast cancer. Knowledge regarding breast cancer symptoms wassignificantly related to participation in mammography for each ethnic group.Notable barriers to breast screening included pain, being too time-consuming,lack of a GP recommendation and fear of cancer detection.Conclusion: The low participation demonstrated in these communities’highlights the immediate need to initiate culturally sensitive health interventionsfor SEA women in Sydney, which can be used for other ethnic groups similar tothe ones included in this study. It is essential to increase general breast cancerknowledge as it plays an important role in initiating breast screening

Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Anisakidosis in both European (Merluccius merluccius) and Lizard Head (Saurida undosquamis) Hakes
Get PDFThis study focuses on Anisakidosis as a disease caused by a number of Anisakid larvae including Anisakis simplex, Pseudoterranova decipiens, Hysterothylacium spp. and Contracaecum spp., through assessing the clinical signs and the clinical examination of the disease in 170 Lizard head (Saurida undosquamis) and 160 European hakes (Merluccius merluccius) during the period from April 2011 to July 2012. In addition, identification of the recovered larvae morphologically and using random modified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) technique. No obvious clinical signs were observed in the examined fish. The post mortem examination revealed the presence of free or encapsulated larvae within the body cavity, on the visceral organs and in the musculature. The seasonal prevalence of Anisakid larvae was the highest in spring and summer and its lowest level was in autumn in both examined fish spp. The highest intensity of larvae was observed in the organs and viscera rather than in the musculature. RAPD technique identified the recovered larvae using four arbitrary primers. It could be concluded that Anisakid larvae can be easily identified using molecular tools by its well characterized genetic finger print and that in turn will help in its diagnosis in parallel with the traditional tools

The Experimental Investigation of The performance of Phosphor Coating
Get PDFDifferent screen printing parameters have a distinct effect on the quality of coating that is created. This experimental work looked to measure these parameters. It is divided into two parts where the first part measured the surface wettability of various substrates Wettability measurement was performed through measuring the contact angle between the droplet and the substrate surface. Varying the UV exposure time by putting substrate in the UV ozone cleaner has a considerable effect on the wettability of the surface. Water was supplied to a PEDOT: PSS substrate via Fibro DAT 1100 which is attached to a camera and a computer for capturing and analyzing coatings for the spread of a water droplet on the substrate surface. From these analyses, the main aim is to measure the contact angle between the droplet and the substrate surface which indicates the surface wettability. Some factors may affect the wettability of the surface such as varying the UV time and varying the hold time. As a result, increasing these times will decrease the contact angle where a small contact angle indicates a favorable wettability. The second part measured the electrical resistance and transparency of the printed ink after various printing experiments such as implementing UV treatment, changing the ink and changing the mesh ruling. The Rheometer device was used to test the properties of the specimen. Where this device can be used to measure the properties of the specimen such as the shear modules, in this paper the plate was used to effect on the specimens, where different readings are recorded for these specimens. Also, 24 samples were prepared and the electrical resistance for these samples was measured in this paper. As a result, the electrical resistance for treated samples was greater than that for untreated samples; the electrical resistance of Elentan ink was greater than that for PEDOT at the same conditions. Changing the screen size from (61-64) to (40-100) increase the value of resistance at the same conditions. For the transparency measurements the Elentan ink had a higher transparency than PEDOT ink. Although many women in these places have attained greater heights, majority of women in these areas still find education and career development a struggle. In this study, we analyze the media portrayal of the educational qualification and career choices of the female characters of the soap operas. We consider soap operas broadcast by Hum TV during the prime time and analyze the extent to which gender biasing still exists in terms of education and career. We seek to highlight how a positive portrayal of women in soap operas can effectively change perceptions and promote the independence of women with respect to career and education in real situations

No full textThe study Digital Divide: A Gap In Interpersonal Communication Amongst Family Relationships seeks to find out how technology has affected the willingness of family members to engage in interpersonal communication in the family. The survey research design was adopted for the research and the structured questionnaire was employed as instrument of data collection. The study found that technology has created a gap in interpersonal communication amongst family relationships and that people lose interest in communicating interpersonally with family members due to constant engagement in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The study recommends that families should make concerted effort at adopting and integrating ICTs that will help enhance interpersonal communication in family relationships rather than engage with ICTS that will erode interpersonal communication amongst family relationships. Also, family centered activities that provide opportunities for family members to communicate interpersonally without the interruption or interference of any technology should be encouraged
