Urban sustainability as the result of a carefully integrated process: Case study of a new urban development on the Barcelona seafront
An in-depth understanding of the basis of urbansustainability in urbanisation involves tackling a carefullyintegrated process. By means of a holistic guiding conceptpushing the boundaries in the sustainable design of buildings,this article describes the development plan drawn up toreurbanise the seafront “Ãrea de las térmicas del Besós†inBarcelona. This combines residential and tertiary uses,infrastructure and also free areas for museum use in a greatindustrial building home to a former power station. The currentplan will add a kilometre of beach to be used and enjoyed by thecitizens of Barcelona. It will also provide the municipality of SantAdriá de Besòs with access to the sea.The plan’s most original contribution lies in its aim to collaboratetowards sustainable urban development. It sets out to do so byincorporating strategies not only on an urban scale, but also onan architectural scale and even introducing landscape and greenelements into the design. This methodology will facilitate thegeneration of urban growth with a minimum environmentalimpact and with low carbon emissions
Mapping Low-carbon Precincts in Residential Neighbourhoods:A comparative case study of the traditional and the modern types
Urbanization in the last century has created many serious problems including increased carbon footprint in cities leading to global warming and climate change. India being one of the fastest growing developing countries with rapid economic development and industrialization, the carbon footprint of Indian cities is expected to increase with much higher consumption patterns in the following decades. Developing a low carbon precinct in India is however a comparatively new genre of sustainable development. As the debate is still on about the chances and consequences of low carbon precinct in the country, green buildings are widely accepted as the upcoming solution of low carbon footprint. This paper outlines the idea of low carbon precinct, its relevance, and reviews its components and various tools and techniques that can be adopted for mapping and assessing low carbon precincts. The given paper concludes by making a comparative analysis of two different neighborhood clustering patterns, one traditional and organic and the other planned layout, in the Indian metropolitan city of Kolkata representing warm humid climate by simulating their outdoor temperatures in the outdoor thermal simulation and energy mapping software ENVI-met. The comparative study concludes the traditional, organically grown neighborhoods to have higher outdoor temperatures and hence contributing more towards the urban heat island effect as compared to the planned neighborhood layout in the given city’s context
Optimation of Electrical Energy Generation for Low Rise Office Building with Folding- BIPV Concept
BIPV is an architectural concept thatrelated to energy contribution. The system hasfunctions of producing electricity as well as buildingform giver. The effectivity of BIPV depends on solarradiation received. Meanwhile, the solar radiationreceived depends on numbers of solar receiving areaand environmental shading. Environmental shadingwill decrease the effectivity of BIPV. But, integratedconfiguration of folding-BIPV is expected to createmore numbers of solar receiving area. The integratedconfiguration of folding-BIPV will create optimumBIPV, both in electrical generation and building formgiver. Experiment to low rise office building intropical climate is done by giving folding treatment.The experiment also considers about environmentalshading. Evaluation is done by analyzing andoptimizing the numbers and uniformity of solarradiation received. Simulation with ARCHIPAK 5.1 isused as experimental research tool. The simulation isused to calculate annual radiation received (kWh/m²)from folding-BIPV configuration. Manual calculationis used to calculate total annual radiation received(kWh) and uniformity percentage. Gradient diagramis used to do the optimation. Exploring the Imageability of Walled City Jaipur
The city is an amalgamation of the utmost interactions of the built mass (form), open spaces and their spatial organization (layout) in a geographical area to obtain a holistic pattern and environment, generally based on socioeconomic conditions and lifestyle of the inhabitants, nature and character of activities and the available materials and technologies, which consequently shapes the overall form and thus image and identity of the place. The cities commonly have a large number of images based on the selective impressions of related realms of the surrounding forms assimilated by people through exaggeration of certain features and exclusion of the other based on the planning and layout of the various elements of the built forms. This paper attempts to analyze various elements of urban form (i.e. built form and unbuilt spaces) of the walled city of Jaipur which results in the formation image and identity of the city. Jaipur is a medieval city founded in 1727 to accommodate exploding population of Amber city, the capital of erstwhile Dhoondhar kingdom. It is known as Pink City for its predominantly pink/rose and complimentary colour schemes. The city has seen a huge transformation in the culture, life style, socioeconomic condition and technology over the ages, yet it is one of most accessible and functional medieval city in India. The study is based on field surveys and analysis of various literatures to ascertain the elements of urban form and overall planning of the forms, pattern and structure resulting into perception and formation of the image and identity of the walled city. The paper concludes with recommendation for the highlighted problems and discrepancies in perception of the overall image and form of the city due to the urban growth and development in the present context
A Digital Pre-Occupancy Architectural Toolset for Reducing Stress Levels in Urban Environments
This research examines the effects of the builtenvironment on human stress and anxiety levels, by measuringthe responses of participants as they interact with variousarchitectural design features using Augmented Realitytechnology. Architectural form-making is becoming moredynamic and expressive in today’s world, deviating fromtraditional designs, especially in urban contexts. Currenttechnology enables such forms to be created, but prior to theirconstruction there is no easy way to determine how they mightaffect the stress levels of the people who experience theredesigned environment. The physical geography of cities isalready known to have an effect on human well-being, andspecific design issues have been correlated with negative healthoutcomes, including increased levels of anxiety. However, thepositive or negative changes that can be induced through newdesigns are often just a matter of speculation. Our research helpsto address this issue by developing a prototype interface toevaluate human-experience factors during the design reviewprocess. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate biometric dataobtained from participants through an Augmented Realityexperience, and parsed that data with respect to the participants’personal backgrounds and other demographic information. Theprototype toolset was developed based on three differentarchitectural variables—shape, height, and visual pattern. Theresults from the experiment indicate there is a relationshipbetween these architectural forms and stress levels. This researchcontributes to design pedagogy and practice, and it helps to showhow continuous parametric form generation can be used to betterreduce anxiety levels in future urban environments
Urban youth in Botswana and their habitual practice of texting
In this article, I consider mobile phone consumption among urban youth in Botswana, focusing specifically on texting. During the course of this article, I demonstrate that due to the continuous need to connect with other people, as well as the inexpensive nature of texting on mobile phones, urban youth in Botswana have developed a penchant to texting on mobile phones. In particular, youth use text messaging on their devices to re-ensconce their traditional obligations of connecting with family, relatives and associates; and to link-up with their peers and other users through sms, chats, emails and online social networks. Despite this, much texting when other people are around is considered an ill-mannered activity among youth in Botswana. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that much texting, which is common among youth in Botswana is an indication that there is a close relationship between mobile phone use and the socio-economic challenges such as unemployment, poverty and rural to urban migration and that users of these devices face
A Game Engine based Networked Infrastructure to Create and Share 3D Abstract Art
Online communities have been proactive in producingcollaborative creative content such as music, games and othersocial interactions. Online collaboration has enabled contributorsto peer produce and share masses of creative content. Examplesrange from information sharing such as Wikipedia to opensource software and other specific art projects. Software vendorshave recently introduced low cost 2D and 3D content authoringtools allowing user communities to generate and share creativecontent. Emerging networking programming interfaces availableinside modern game engines allow contributors to implementmultiplayer or multiuser interaction relatively easily. This paperpresents a 3D art creation framework to be used over networkedinfrastructure in a multiuser environment. Contributors will beable to create 3D sculptures at runtime, share with other users ina common networked working environment and critique eachother’s work. Experimental work also involved evaluatingprocedurally generated meshes versus instantiation of primitivemesh objects. Saving and loading mesh information in anoptimum way is also explored
Skill Development: A Way to Leverage the Demographic Dividend in India
The world’s population is ageing fast and it is estimated that the global population aged 65 and above shall reach to 1.3 billion by 2040, which will be more than double of 530 million in 2010. Rapidly ageing population shall result in severe labor shortage across in the global market. The world’s largest economies like Germany, France and US are expected to suffer due to the acute shortage of skilled workers. According to a global study, presently India is one of the largest labor-surplus countries in terms of its working age group (15-64 years) populations worldwide. India is in demographic dividend phase and can generate skilled manpower for employment through effective use of vocational and skill development training. The present study is to examine how to create skilled labor force through effective use of schemes of Government of India, run by different ministries to facilitate its skill development mission target to train 500 million people by 2022
