Comparing Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Soil Layer from Sag Pond near Lembang Fault, West Java, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Electrical and magnetic properties have been used in soil characterization for various types of soils except for soil originated from sag pond sediment. Formed near fault line, sag pond provides a unique environment for sedimentation. In this study, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of soil samples obtained by coring process were measured to find out how these two properties were related. A 364 cm core was obtained in a sag pond located next to Lembang Fault in West Java, Indonesia. The core covers two different layers that are differ not only on their coloration and texture but also showed variations in their electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. In the first layer, termed silty loam (above 165 cm), electrical conductivity correlates positively with magnetic susceptibility whereas in the second layer, termed silty-clay (below 165 cm) the correlation is negative. These differences are probably due content of magnetic minerals that is high in silt but low in clay. The results of this study infer that correlation between electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility could then be used as a tool to delineate soil layers.  Â

Oakland, California Oakland, [email protected] [email protected]—Neonatal mortality is an important global health indicator of a country. Nigeria has one of the highest neonatal mortality rates in the world. Rural portions of the country have higher rates of neonatal mortality, compared to urban areas. Problems related to asphyxiation result because resuscitation training is not targeted to the correct provider. Neonatal resuscitation training was given in three clinical sites in rural Nigeria, from October 23, 2015 to October 28, 2015. Seventy (70) participants aged 19-60 completed a 17-item questionnaire about neonatal knowledge and completed a 38-item hands-on skills checklist to measure their neonatal skill abilities. Training was given to community health extension workers (CHEWs), auxiliary nurses, traditional birth attendants (TBAs), nurse midwives, student nurse midwives, and nursing officers. To compare the mean scores between a pre-test and a post-test for both the knowledge questionnaire and the skills test, a dependent samples t-test was performed. For knowledge, the average score on the pre-test was 12.43±2.98, p<.0001 and the average score on the post-test was 14.74 ±2.16, p<.0001, meaning that the average knowledge score increased by 2.31 points, after the training. For skill, the average score on the pre-test was 21.87±6.58, p<.0001 and the average score on the post-test was 34.67±4.50, p<.0001, meaning that the average skills score increased by 12.8 points, after the training. The implementation of a neonatal resuscitation training program in rural Nigeria, can improve neonatal resuscitation knowledge and neonatal resuscitation skill ability amongst TBAs and other birth attendants. This has the potential to reduce the high neonatal mortality rates in rural communities

Economic Fluctuations and the Role of Monetary Policy: An Investigation of an Agent-based Model

    Get PDF
The merit of ABM comes directly from removing set of unreal assumptions that are commonly assumed in standard models. Not only can ABM regenerates macroeconomics regularities at the same level as the traditional models without introducing any exogenous process but also displays the ability to capture microeconomics dynamics. Simulation results conform to standard monetary economics theory—expansionary monetary policy can be used as a stabilization tool and leave no permanent impacts to real variables. When an economy experiences growth, an increase in money supply is required to stabilize price level, otherwise, severe deflation is expected as well as high fluctuations in unemployment level. Simple monetary policy can be used to stabilize such fluctuations and would reduced economy-wide default risk, which may have positive economic impacts in the long run. Provided that agents do not hold assets in this model setup, the study supports Friedman’s K-percent rule as it performs the best in term of output improvement. The asymmetric effects of monetary policy are found in number of aspects: impact to GDP, impact duration, and impact to unemployment level. Less flexibility in downward price adjustment is the reason behind such asymmetric responses

International Financial Reporting Standards Adoption and Financial Reporting Information Overload: Evidence from Nigerian Banks

    Get PDF
The wide adoption and implementation ofInternational Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS)principally hinges on the notion that it promotes theproduction of high quality financial information forinvestor’s decision making in the current globalizedworld. However, IFRS adoption is stated to beassociated with the problem of information overload. This paper examines this assertion within theNigerian banking industry. Data is generated fromthe financial reports of thirteen banks quoted on theNigerian Stock Exchange as at 31st December, 2014,two years pre and post-IFRS adoption. Descriptivestatistics is utilized to analyse the data and the pairedsampled t-test statistics to test the hypotheses. Thedescriptive results reveal that on average, IFRSadoption cause a 31.6% increase in the length offinancial reports with the accounting policies segmentincreasing by 95.3%, income statement by 84.6%,notes to the accounts by 70.2%, managementdiscussion and analysis by 23.2%, cash flow statementby 13.3%, and statement of financial position by9.7%. Only the others segments of the financialreports decrease by 10%. The results of the paired ttestshows that there is a significant difference in theoverall length of information disclosed by Nigerianbanks in the pre and post-IFRS adoption periodsimplying IFRS adoption led to information over loadin the financial reports of Nigerian banks. Furtherinvestigation reveals that notwithstanding theincrease in information disclosure, post-IFRSreporting is more decision relevant. The paperrecommends that investors seeking investmentopportunities in the post-IFRS regime shouldpatronize financial analyst to guide their decisionmaking and the regulatory authorities especially theCentral Bank of Nigeria should discourage companydirectors from disclosing unnecessary information byregulating on the maximum number of pages inannual reports and accounts

Early Railway Suburbs and Their Links to Contemporary Transit-Oriented Developments

    No full text
Since the late 1980’s, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has emerged as a sustainable interpretation of neotraditional community design that promised to address a myriad of spatial planning issues. Being first introduced in North America, the concept highlighted the importance of integrating land use and transport systems with the aim of decreasing automobile dependency. Although, urban planners and transportation scholars have raised TOD’s profile in practice, the origins of this concept go back much further. There are some remarkable examples of large-scale real estate developments across North America, established on properties owned by transit companies, with the aim of generating revenue for the transit company and the government. One of the most successful Canadian examples of this type of development is the Town of Mount Royal located in Montreal. This suburban development, which emerged at the dawn of the twentieth century, predates, by almost a century, the contemporary concept of TOD. This paper looks at this development comprehensively and discusses the lessons learned from it. Additionally, using several recent Canadian TODs the study compares old and new developments and challenges faced within their design and operation process. By evaluating the first generation of transit-oriented development, the paper is meant to serve as a guideline for further work that seek to define the origins of TOD and propose standards of practice for the next generation of projects

Effect of Aggregate Size on the Engineering Properties of Palm Oil Clinker Concrete

    No full text
In developing countries, abundant agricultural and industrial wastes are discharged; these wastes can be used as potential materials or replacement materials in the construction industry. Malaysia is the world’s largest producer of palm oil in the industry. Since palm oil clinker is abundant, lots of attempt have been made to investigate the possible use of this material, especially in the field of construction more so, as concrete is one of the most versatile construction materials. This agricultural waste, being referred to as Palm Oil Clinker Incinerated By-products (OPIB), can totally replace the stone aggregate in concrete mixtures. In this research, the focus is on the strength development of OPIB concrete. Tests have been conducted to investigate the effect of using OPIB aggregate, on the engineering properties of concrete in order to determine the optimum mix proportion of lightweight concrete, using different OPIB of aggregate size. In the tests, the aggregate is graded and then, the mix proportion of this lightweight concrete is determined by a trial of the mix. Finally, the properties of fresh and hardened concrete tests were determined

Need to conserve the Built Environment -A case study of Aligarh Muslim University

    No full text
Environment is very wrongly taken as political agenda these days. The constructions have a major role while maintaining the quality of environment. So, it is important to give attention towards the building of any age. This can be done by conservation of built environment which is the planned management of the resources. It is also essential in order to understand the nation's cultural heritage and is an environmentally responsible practice too. Existing buildings can often be energy efficient through their use of good ventilation, durable materials, and spatial relationships. Aligarh Muslim University, one among the Heritage Universities of India, which was founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875 is also passing with the same fate. Now, with the passage of time (after more than hundred and thirty years), the built environment of the beautiful monuments constructed in its early phase were getting effected. This is not happening only with this complex but it is a common practice with all the heritage Institutions of national importance
