An Assistive Technology Framework for Communication with Hearing Impaired Persons
This paper presents a novel assistive technology framework which provides an interface to support communication between hearing impaired person and ordinary person over the mobile phone. It converts the ordinary person's voice to text and afterward text to tactile feedback at the hearing impaired person’s end. The Morse Code tactile feedback have been identified as the most appropriate method for providing the tactile feedback at the hearing impaired person’s end, since it is a standard code which helps persons with impairments. The work addresses the challenge of using a set of Morse Code shorthand vibration patterns to translate the whole text message to tactile feedback to provide a simple, efficient and synchronous communication, rather than vibrating each and every character in text usingMorse Code characters. The user evaluation found that, most hearing impaired persons’ preferred method of conversation is the Morse Code shorthand forms with two or three character length rather than reading the entire text message. Due to less perspicuity of a hearing impaired person’s voice, the study comes up with the conversion of the hearing impaired persons’ voice to text and sends it to the ordinary person synchronously as a voice reply. The results of the evaluation experiment shows that the assistive technology framework facilitates by improving the quality of communication of hearing impaired persons over a mobile device
Controlling A Robot in Unreachable Places with GPS and Ultrasonic Sensors
Guiding and navigating a robot through obstacles can be integrated into many applications; such as guiding visually impaired people, or driving the robot through an unknown terrain. As such developing a reliable robot which, in addition to being remotely navigated, can analyze its’ path and concludes the best-unobstructed route is required. The use of Neural Networks to analyze received data from sensors to decide on the best path provides high reliability as well as fast routing. This will also help in preserving robot’s motors’ power. This research implements a Festo-Robotino robot that has six ultrasonic sensors to navigate through a multi-obstacle path to decide on the best route to take. This system is also equipped with a GPS to locate it and remotely control it if necessary
The Lived Experiences and Challenges Faced by Male Nursing Students: A Canadian Perspective
Background: Despite the impending shortage of nurses inCanada and globally, the recruitment and retention of malesto the profession has been a challenge in the new millenniumdue to a variety of social barriers and negative stereotypespropagated by the mass and social media, and in part byschools of nursing themselves.Purpose: To examine the lived experiences of male nursingstudents in Ontario, Canada and their perceptions ofreported educational and practice barriers, and socialstereotypes.Design: A phenomenological approach was employed toexamine the lived experiences of 37 male nursing students. Methods: Purposive and snowball sampling techniques wereemployed to recruit male students from a mid-sizeduniversity school of nursing. In depth, face-to-faceinterviews were conducted and guided by semi-structuredopen-end questions. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, coded and thematically categorized to make sense of theessential meanings. Results: Barriers to recruitment and retention of males inschools of nursing included the feminization of nursingcurriculums; reverse discrimination by female nursingstudents, faculty and nursing clinical staff; a lack of positivemale role models in academia, and negative socialstereotypes including that men in nursing are effeminate, gay or are labeled as inappropriate caregiversConclusion: The active recruitment and retention of malesinto schools of nursing may help to address, in part, thepredicted global shortages facing the profession, while alsohelping to promote gender diversity and social equity in thiscritical health care profession
Comparing the Effect of Stigma on the Recognition of Suicide Risk in Others between Australia and Brazil
Few studies have considered how suicide is perceived and impacted by stigma across cultures. A sample of 478 participants from Australia and Brazil was used to investigate cross-cultural perceptions of suicide and the impact of stigma on the recognition of suicide risk in others. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide framed a mixed method within and between groups design. English and Portuguese versions of an online survey were developed to assess perception of thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, acquired capability for suicide, suicide stigma, and demographic characteristics. A significant model was identified predicting recognition of suicide risk in Australia and Brazil. However, not all constructs contributed uniquely. Suicide stigma was found to blind perception of suicide risk in others across cultures. Theoretical implications and future directions for research are outlined

Critical Discourse Analysis of Female Consciousness in the Novel Orlando from Transitivity Perspective
This paper adopts transitivity system approach tomake a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of femaleconsciousness in the novel Orlando written by Virginia Woolf. The novel depicts the transformation of the protagonist Orlandofrom a man to a woman. Most previous researches on Orlandohave been carried out from a historical perspective by layingstress on feminism and androgynism indicated from the text. While this research integrates transitivity system and CDAtogether to systematically investigate ideology and social powerresided in the text. Thus, two linguistic aspects are taken as thetheoretical framework. One is CDA which focuses on socialinequality and injustice (Fower, 1981) by revealing ideologicaldominance and power hidden in the discourse. The other one istransitivity system which comes from M.A.K.Halliday’sSystemic-Functional Grammar. As for the methodology of thisresearch, quantitative analysis as well as qualitative analysis areused. The purpose of the study is to uncover the relationshipbetween language and society by performing a critical analysison the novel
The Experience of A First-time Online Cultural Studies Instructor: A Case Study
With enrollment in online courses continuing to rise, student learning and satisfaction have become the focus of a growing body of research. However, the first-time online instructor experience has not been as widely investigated. This study examines the experience of Pamela, a first-time online Cultural Studies instructor, through a series of interviews conducted throughout the semester in order to track her progression at four points in the semester. It also seeks to determine what factors the first-time online instructor perceives to have the greatest impact on course creation and teaching strategies, namely the nature of the Cultural Studies course as implemented online, Pamela’s digital immigrant mindset and growth throughout the semester, best practices and constraints in distance education, and the results of best practice
Preparation of FeCo/Cu Core Shell Magnetic Nanoparticles
FeCo/Cu core shell structure with FeCo as a core andcopper as the shell has been successfully synthesized bydisplacement reaction. The morphology, grain size, lattice strain, and magnetic properties of all the samples were examined byusing transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Annealingtemperatures and its effect on magnetic properties of theFeCo/Cu core shell particles was investigated. A maximumcoercivity (Hc) of 398.84 Oe was recorded for the sample heattreated in magnetic field. The blocking temperatures (TB) andsquareness (Mr/Ms) of the sample gradually increased due to theinfluence of temperature and magnetic field
