The Potential for Ground-Source Cooling of Buildings in the State of Kuwait: Investigation of Subsoil Environment and Properties

    No full text
In most countries, developing hybrid coolingtechniques to reduce domestic cooling demand is a key objective, but also poses a particular challenge in desert climates such asKuwait. Ground cooling, which is a passive cooling technique, could help meet this objective. However, the purpose of thepresent paper is to investigate the environment and properties atseveral points below the ground surface to a maximum depth offive meters deep. The results showed a reduction in subsoiltemperature during the summer season of about 81 °C,concerning maximum average ambient air temperature. Thismay be shown to have the potential for ground cooling energy forunderground buildings in the desert climate or the use of theground cooling application, such as Earth-Air Heat Exchanger

APRT – Another Pattern Recognition Tool

    Get PDF
Understanding and using Design Patterns improves software quality through better comprehension of programs for both experienced developers and relative novices. Often design patterns are learned through simplified “toy†programs and exemplars that foreground the structure of the pattern. In production code the objects and methods that comprise the pattern can be hidden within a complex mesh of intracode relationships. This paper introduces APRT, an ANTLRbased tool that recovers the structure of both static and dynamic patterns from large codebases so that they can be studied in context

    Visualising Volumetric Fractals

    Get PDF
Fractal images have for many years been a richsource of exploration by those in computer science who also havean interest in graphics. They often served as a way of testing theperformance of new computing hardware and to explore thecapabilities of emerging display technologies. While there havebeen forays by some into 3D geometric fractals, the 3Dequivalents of the Mandelbrot set have been largely ignored. Thisis largely due to the lack of suitable tools for rendering these setsexcept perhaps as isosurfaces, a rather unsatisfactory and limitedrepresentation. The following will illustrate the application ofGPU based raycasting, a now relatively standard approach tovolume rendering, to the representation of volumetric fractals.Leveraging existing software that has been designed for generalvolume visualisation allows the interested 3D fractal explorer tofocus on the mathematical generation of the volume data ratherthan reinventing the entire volume rendering pipeline

Ground level ozone gives intensively concern of itsadverse effects towards human health and environmental.Increasing numbers of vehicles which also known to be one of thesources of its precursors that emitted from vehicle exhausts leadsto the production of ground level ozone. Meteorologicalconditions are also affecting the production of this pollutant.Feedforward Backpropagation models were developed by usingartificial neural network to predict ozone concentrations nearbyselected schools area by considering the relationship with itsprecursors and meteorological parameters. From the results, thebest hidden nodes found for all FFBP models for SSH, SSN, SSTand STR were 17, 12, 15 and 14, respectively. SSN found to hasthe best FFBP models with the highest accuracy measures of IA,PA and R2 which are 0.9832, 0.9686 and 0.8674, respectively ifcompared to other schools. SSN also recorded the lowest errorfor RMSE with the value of 3.3327. However, STR found to hasthe lowest error of NAE with the value of 0.1004. Nevertheless, the value of NAE for SSN can still be considered as loweramongst all schools

The levels of knowledge and the levels of practice were categorized as very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. Results: Nurses had low levels of knowledge and high levels of practice regarding the prevention of CS-SSI in Indonesia. Conclusions: Nurses' knowledge and practice in certain areas of the prevention of CS-SSI need to be improved. Education and training programs should be conducted in Indonesia to improve nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding CS-SSI prevention using evidence-based practice

Balanced Abstract Web-MVC Style: An Abstract MVC Implementation for Web-based Applications

    Get PDF
The features and the capabilities of web applicationsare growing rapidly, and the complexities and difficulties ofweb applications engineering are also growing in parallel. Ifthe architectural formalism of these advanced web applicationsis well realized, the complexities could be understood, thus thedifficulties could be reduced. Model-View-Controller (MVC)has been recognized as a well-formed architectural style, andhas been widely used in web applications engineering invarious forms of implementations. These MVCimplementations are heavily dependent on specific set oftechnologies and/or some other facts; hence, they do notprovide an abstract realization to be used in a wider range ofweb application engineering. We propose an implementation ofMVC in more abstract form, which – we think – will increasethe realization of the advanced web applications, thus lower theengineering complexities and difficulties of web applications. We believe that this implementation is more applicable in awider range of environments and technologies, and will upturnthe architectural properties like performance andmodifiability. Based on this implementation we introduce anMVC based architectural style for web applications. In future,we expect to improve this further towards supporting RichInternet Applications

Being a writer, translator, critic and social activist, SuManshu was one of the few scholars at his time preoccupied withIndian literature together with the European. He practiced theinterlingual communication carefully during the trans-culturalactivities and also adopted diverse genres and stylistic strategiesin the intralingual reservoirs of his native language. Theintertextual performances render cultural conflicts andconvergences creative potency in Su Manshu’s fictions andcontextualize the pensées of the writer. The perspective ofintertextuality enables the researcher to surmount thepreviously-assumed barriers between fiction and nonfiction andto probe into the dimensions and constituents of these“hypertexts.â

Collapsible Tabular Visualization of Aspects in Object Oriented Programming

    Get PDF
Due to its implicit invocation nature ofAspect Oriented Programming (AOP), locating a jointpoint for executing aspect is extremely difficult. Hence,it becomes difficult to understand the application’sflow and behavior. Current AOP visualization tools havelimitations such as high dependency on other tools, confusing and excessive use of color to represent aspectsand using an outdated version of AspectJ. In thispaper, we propose a new approach collapsibletabular visualization tool to visualize and represent AOPfeatures to aid the programmers in betterunderstanding AOP applications. We have come outof traditional color-based aspect visualization and developeda web based tool: AspectViz that visualizes the aspects ina simple collapsible table. A questionnaire containingfour different questions related to aspects visualizationwas developed to compare AspectViz with currentvisualization tools. 20 graduate students andprofessional software developers were invited to participatein the test experiment as well as the survey. We havecompared its performance with existing AOPvisualization tools i.e. the AJDT and the AspectMaps andshowed how it outperformed in many cases, which is nocolor confusion, simple tabular visualization of aspects, nodependency on third-party software, easy to understand andthe time it took to find a particular aspect was less etc.Collapsible tabular visualization enhanced the usability andperformance of aspect locating in aspect-orientedprogramming

Self or Others: Exploring the Role of Truancy as the link between Personality Traits and Peer Influences found in Truant Students

    Get PDF
Current research aims to investigate the role truancy plays between personality characteristics of a adolescent and the kind of peers they affiliate with, it adds to existing knowledge by evaluating the extent to which a truant life style lures the right personality to seek peers that can help initiate and/or maintain it (Allen, Chango, Szwedo, Schad, & Marston, 2012; Oetting & Beauvais, 1987). Most previous research has ignored the glamour and adrenaline- inciting quality that a life of truancy holds for the youngsters. Specifically the study investigated whether a clear meditational pathway can be traced between personality traits and peer influence and truancy. This study utilized contrasting groups (that of truant and punctual students) to study the mediation. Personality traits were characterized by Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ; Naqvi, 2007) which measures personality in terms of extraversion, introversion, lie, neuroticism, and psychoticism. This research concentrated on general, interpersonal relations with peers and the specific interpersonal incitation for drug use. Previous research considers truancy as the cause of criminal activities and antisocial lifestyles. Therefore exposure to ill-treatment, abuse and exploitation by adults and institutions in the civil government are blamed for exposing vulnerable children to a life of crime or delinquency. On the contrary, the current research is an attempt to investigate if the children themselves set out to a world of opportunity, free of monotony and chances of finding a breakthrough to better financial conditions or a secret for personal growth. In that the current research sees, truancy as a life choice, or a life choice that causes certain personality types to seek order and experienced peers who can aid their chances of getting involved and doing something exciting; the research is centred around the assumption that when majority of a country’s population live near the poverty line, chances of truancy and related activities may be a choice rather than a chance factor. Employing purposive sample of 200 boys, the study found that the truant students were more predisposed towards the extrovert-introvert traits of personality than punctual students. It was also found that peer influences are influenced by extrovert-introvert traits of personality. Results revealed that truancy (truant & punctual students) is partial mediator between extrovert-introvert of personality traits and subscale of peer Influence. Recommendations of the study are that both truant and punctual can equally be benefitted by an intervention addressing peer influence however, truant students can get more benefit by addressing personality traits. This study would be helpful for pedagogical and clinical setting for truant school students. It also gives education policy makers food for thought to introduce activities in educational institutions for reduction of truancy

The Missing Link Between Student Capabilitiesand Motivation: Perceived Self-Efficacy

    Get PDF
In recent years, the lack of students’ motivation has become critical all over the world because of the decrease in work opportunities for young people without general or vocational secondary education. Currently, there is an interest in the ways in which teachers in youth education can foster students’ development of competencies and motivation. This paper explores the premise that teachers should move beyond competencies and motivation and consider the perceived self-efficacy that represents the ‘missing link’ between the two student characteristics. The paper deals with two research questions: how can teachers generate knowledge about perceived self-efficacy, and which aspects of the perceived self-efficacy are the most important in relation to learning outcome
