The IS research community has accumulated a criticalmass of studies on IT business value, but the questions of howand why IT creates business values remain understudied. In thisstudy, we focus on the role of network centrality and conjecturethat network centrality moderates the effects of IT initiatives onfirm performance. We collected data of 26 public companiescross 19 industries over a period of 1994-2008 (15 years) andconducted a multiple-level analysis. The results of data analysisshow that IT initiatives are significantly, positively related to firmperformance only in the high network centrality situation

Content Based Cross-Domain Recommendation Using Linked Open Data

A recommender system, irrespective of theapproach that has been used to implement it suffers fromthe cold-start situation. Not being able to predict items to anew user due to not having access to his previouspreferences, and not being able to recommend a new item tousers due to not having any prior ratings on theparticular item is the two cold-start problems. Even thoughcontent-based recommender systems are immune to itemcold-start problem, they are comparatively less used due tolack of up-to-date data sources that provide item featuresand also due to the high amount of pre-processing requiredwhen using existing data sources for retrieving meta-data.In this paper we present a content-based cross domainrecommendation system using Linked Open Data toaddress the issue of cold-start situation. The evaluationproves that this approach can be used as a solution to a coldstartsituation and also the prevailing issue of content-basedrecommender systems which forced them to take thebackseat will no longer be applicable when Linked OpenData is used

National Identity in The Multicultural State

    No full text
The concept of national identity has been conceived and used in different ways and for different purposes, especially within the context of a multicultural state. In the first instance, its primordialist interpretation, which sees national identity in terms of ‘blood relation’ can be used by politicians and technocrats to subvert the unity that is paramount to a multicultural state. On the other hand, the social constructivist view, which sees the concept as an ‘artificial contrivance’ can be used by a vicious leadership as a weapon of repression against dissenting voices. In this paper, we shall argue for a middle ground between the primordialist and social constructivist conceptions of identity. This middle ground position suggests that national identity is a dynamic and transformative concept and in the hand of a visionary and committed leadership, national identity is a tool for establishing unity, cooperation, solidarity and development in the multicultural state

Improving Thermal Comfort through Vertical Greeneries in Transitional Spaces for the Tropical Climate: A Review

    No full text
This paper reviews the potential of transitional space inbuilding for improving thermal comfort by using VerticalGreeneries System (VGS). Transitional space could be defined asa space that is indirectly occupied, located in between the interiorand exterior environment. This place acts as both buffer spacesas well as the circulatory routes. In reality, transitional space iscommonly used for communal area in public building andutilised for domestic purposes in residential building, such as inbalcony. Based on this issue, balcony could be optimised forreplacing the greeneries on the ground level since thedevelopment of infrastructure in the urban areas hassignificantly reducing the quantity of green spaces. To overcomethis issue, integrating vertical greeneries in building is apromising solution although there space is limited. In order tomaximise the VGS performance, multi-layer plant canopyconcept could be introduced. It is believed that multi-layer plantcanopy could improve the thermal quality instead of using singlelayer plant canopy
