    Stable flies (Stomoxys spp.) are common pests of livestock in the peri-urban rangelands of Vina Division of the Adamawa Plateau. No documented information is available on their diurnal dynamics in relation to physiological age and landscape. The main aim of this study was to determine the trap apparent density (ADT) of Stomoxys and associate it to their diurnal activity rhythm and landscape. Vavoua traps (n=12) were used for Stomoxys collection. Trapping was carried out for seven days i.e. three days consecutively in August and four days consecutively in October, 2016.Three traps were pitched in each of the three biotopes (river, cattle corral and gallery forest) of the four study sites (Galim, Mbidjoro, Velambai and Soukourwo). All female Stomoxys captured underwent ovarian dissection for the determination of their physiological ages (parous or nulliparous). A total of 218 Stomoxys were caught and identified into four species (S. niger niger, S. omega, S. calcitrans, and S.xanthomelas) with an overall ADT of 2.59 flies per trap per day and Stomoxys niger niger (1.13 s.n.n. per trap per day) recorded the highest ADT. Species richness was study site dependent.Higher catches of females 113 (51.83%) were made than that of their male 105 (48.17%) counterparts. Galim recorded the highest Stomoxys apparent density (4.90) as compared to other sites with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The proportion of parous 87 (59.30%) was higher than that of their nulliparous 46 (40.71%) counterparts. Parity differed with landscape and capture periods. S. n. niger was the most frequent in all biotopes and Galim recorded the highest ADT. The population of female flies was made up of adults (parous) with a bimodal diurnal activity rhythm whereas males had a unimodal activity rhythm.

    Impact of Climate Variability on Reservoir Based Hydro-Power Generation in Jebba Dam, Niger State, Nigeria

    This study examined impact of climate variability on reservoir-based hydro-power-generation in Jebba dam, Niger State of Nigeria. Data of rainfall, temperature, evaporation, reservoir inflow and outflow and power output for thirty-one years were obtained from Jebba Hydropower Station [JHP]. The Man-Kendall and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) were used to establish the influence of weather parameters on the reservoir inflow and outflow. Findings showed increased electricity generation during dry season than wet season. The highest annual mean amount of the electricity generated was in 2016 having mean of 689.12mwh, dry season (352.26mwh) and wet season (336.86mwh). Reservoir inflow showed negative trend with severe fluctuations in 1998 (1436.42M3/Sec), 1999 (1581.08M3/Sec) and 2010 (1641.08M3/Sec) with steady increase in 2016 (1556.0042M3/Sec), 2017 (1556.4242M3/Sec) and 2018 (1635.7542M3/Sec). The reservoir outflow pattern showed tremendous and negative trend in fluctuation with increase in 1998 (1421.75M3/Sec) 1999 (1581.58M3/Sec) and 2010 (1641.16M3/Sec) and a steady increase in 2016 (1535.00M3/Sec), 2017 1558.83M3/Sec and 2018 (1632.00M3/Sec). Thus, rainfall and reservoir inflow had strong relationships with the amount of power generated than temperature and evaporation. Therefore, the government should increase the water carrying capacity of the reservoir construction by storing water to be used during dry periods

    Effect of Metformin on Lactate Metabolism in Normal Hepatocytes under High Glucose Stress in Vitro

    Objective To study the effect of metformin on lactate metabolism in hepatocytes in vitro under high glucose stress. In vitro LO2 cells, liver cells were randomly divided into blank control group, 25 tendency/L glucose solution, 27 tendency/L glucose solution,29 tendency/L glucose solution, 31 tendency/L glucose solution, 33 tendency/L glucose solution,35 tendency/L glucose solution treatment group, the optimal concentration of 31 tendency after L, use 30 tendency for L metformin solution, and then divided into blank control group, the optimal concentration of glucose solution, normal liver cells + metformin solution normal liver cells. The optimal concentration of glucose solution normal liver cells + metformin solution respectively in the 12 h, 24 h,48 h on cell count plate to calculate the number of liver cells, and using lactic acid determination kit the optimal concentration of glucose solution + normal liver cells and normal liver cells + the optimal concentration of glucose solution + metformin solution respectively in the 12 h, 24 h, 48 h of cell cultures of lactic acid value. There was no significant change in the lactic acid concentration but significant increase in the number of surviving hepatocytes in the highglycemic control group compared with that in the high-glycemic control group without metformin. Metformin has no significant effect on lactic acid metabolism of hepatocytes under high glucose stress in vitro, and has a protective effect on hepatocytes under high glucose stress. Based on this,it is preliminarily believed that metformin is not the direct factor leading to diabetic lactic acidosis

    Selection of High-quality Sperms by the Nanotechnological Method of Magnetic Activation in Brazilian Cervids

    Cervids show a high degree of abnormalities in their sperm cells. Thus, this study aimed to select high-quality spermatozoa using magnetic-activated sperm sorting (MASS) compared to density gradient centrifugation (DGC) by assessing the post-selection cell quality. Semen from six Mazama deer was collected by electroejaculation after chemical restraint. The semen was analyzed in four samples: Fresh, DGC, SEMgood - non-apoptotic fraction,and SEMpoor - apoptotic fraction. The material was analyzed for motility and vigor (light microscopy), concentration (Neubauer chamber), semen morphology (phase contrast), and supravital staining test (eosin/ nigrosine).The DGC method used 20 x 106 cells in 90% and 45% percoll® gradient.The MASS used 10 x 106 cells with 20 μl of iron nanoparticles attached to Annexin V and filtration in a magnetic separation column. Both processing methods (DGC and MASS) were effective in producing high-quality spermsamples, with a marked reduction in abnormalities from 41.83 ± 10.25 (fresh) to 14.83 ± 3.17(DGC) and 12 ± 3.01 (SEMgood), with 80.3% ± 2.06 livings cells. These findings suggest that this nanotechnological method,using nanoparticles, effectively produces high-quality semen samples in cervids for use in assisted reproduction

    Earlier we have been reviewing the etiopathogenesis (EP) of obesity, type2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM), Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), Non Alcoholic Fatty Acid Liver Disease (NAFLD) non alcoholic steatohepapititis (NASH), along with its propagation to Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in addition to their therapies exhaustively. T2DM continues to be a major health issue with reaching epidemic to pandemic proportions. Liver disease includes a spectrum of liver injury varying from isolated steatosis known as Non Alcoholic Fatty Acid Liver Disease (NAFLD) to HCC. Clinically it has been observed that the coexistence of NAFLD as well as T2DM is prevalent. T2DM aids in the biological events that results in escalation of robustness of NAFLD that constitutes the primary etiology of chronic liver diseases. In the past 2 decades the incidence of nonviral NAFLD/NASH, obtained HCC has been escalating at a fast pace. In view of no appropriate agents for therapy of NAFLD/NASH, a thiazolidenedione group of drug pioglitazone used for T2DM therapy is utilized occasionally.Thus here we conducted a systematic review utilizing search engine pubmed, google scholar; web of science; embase; Cochrane review libraryutilizingtheMeSHterms like T2DM; MetS; NAFLD; NASH; HCC;WAT; BAT; VisceralAT; Obesity; BMI; Adipocytokines; adiponectin;leptin; resistin; visfatin; irisin; Hepatokines; angiopoietin like protein 2; hepatosscin; retinol binding protein 4; treatment like pioglitazone;liraglutide; elafibranor CVC (cerviciroc); obeticholic acid; aramchol;selonosertib; simtuzumab; Oxidative stress(OS); insulin resistance (IR) from 1980’s to 2021 till date. We found a total of 1050 articles out of which we selected 236 articles for this review. No meta-analysis was done. Hence diagnosis avoidance in addition to treatment of the generation as well as propagation of NAFLD/NASH are significant areas needing tackling. Thus here we have summarized the EP of NAFLD/NASH, as well as NAFLD/NASH, obtained HCC along with the present advantageous therapies under trial,for NAFLD/NASH. Moreover how adipocyte obtained adipokines along with liver obtained hepatokines might work as both diagnostic in addition to therapeutic targets from NAFLD to HCC

    The Loss of Heterozygosity of FHIT Gene in Sporadic Breast Cancer

    The loss of heterozygosity (LOH) is a genetic event that can change gene function. FHIT is a potential tumor suppressor gene.  Although the precise FHIT molecular mechanism of action is not well understood, evidences suggest that Fhit protein reduced levels are involved in mammary carcinogenesis.  The aim of this study was to investigate if FHIT LOH could influence on sporadic breast cancer (BC) biological behavior, through its association with prognostic factors for sporadic BC.Tumor tissue and peripheral blood samples were analyzed using the microsatellite marker D3S1300. The findings were associated with clinicopathological parameters including overall survival. LOH was detected in 31.1%(52/167) of the informative BC’ cases. Considering clinical and pathological characteristics we have found no significant association with FHIT LOH status. The mean follow-up time was 80 months. After the Cox regression analysis two parameters remained associated with BC’s risk of death: TNM stage III and IV - HR = 3.74(95% CI, 1.16-12.1) P=0.027 and disease relapse HR = 3.14(CI 95% 1.26-7.80) P =0.014. This study shows that FHIT LOH by itself is not a prognostic factor for sporadic BC.  Further researches are required to elucidate the functional role of FHIT LOH concerning to BC.

    Spectrum of Pediatric Malignancies: An Observational Single Center Study from Western India

    Cancer is a leading cause of death for children and adolescent worldwide. The cure rates in low middle-income countries are dismal (20%) in comparison to high income countries (80%). The first move is to assemble precise data on epidemiology of pediatric cancer across the country and its region wide variation. This study attempts to provide spectrum of pediatric malignancies from a tertiary care hospital in the state of Rajasthan, India. A total of 140 cases were studied retrospectively over a period of two years (April 2018-March 2020). Patients, 0-18 years of age that are diagnosed as a case of malignancy were included in this study. The records of these patients were retrieved and analyzed. Patients were stratified in 4 groups; 0-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years and 15-18 years. Most of the patients fell in 15-18 year group (35.7%), followed by 5-9 year group (28.5%). Majority of cases, 67.8% were male. The male to female ratio is 2.1:1. Leukemia (40%) was the most common malignancy followed by lymphoma, retinoblastoma and malignant bone tumors. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia comprises majority (35/56) of leukemia. Retinoblastoma was predominant malignancy among <5-year children. In all other groups, leukemia was predominant. This study gauges the trend of pediatric malignancies at one of the largest tertiary care hospitals in Rajasthan, which is important in the planning and evaluation of health strategies. As we lack a dedicated pediatric cancer registry, such epidemiological studies play a significant part for this small but distinguished group of patients

    Assessment on Radiation Hazard Indices from Selected Dumpsites in Lafia Metropolis, Nasarawa State, Nigeria

    This research reports an assessment of ionizing radiation in some chosen Dumpsites in Lafia Local government area of Nasarawa State. Ionizing radiation measurement was conducted at four Dump sites. The survey was done using a radiation survey meter (Radex one Outdoor 55130719 NA). Radiation exposure rate in micro sievert per hour (μSvhr-1) was measured. Readings were taken by placing the detector at gonad level about 1 meter above the ground. Result showed that the average annual effective dose rate in the selected dumpsites were 0.22 mSv/yr for Lafia modern market, 0.17 mSv/yr for dumpsite opposite governor Isa house, 0.15 mSv/yr for Timber shade Lafia and 0.20 mSv/yrfor Science School Lafia respectively with a mean value of 0.19 mSv/yr for all location, while the mean calculated excess life cancer risk (ELCR) is 0.65 x 10-3.Dumpsites yearly absorbed dose rate and their corresponding ELCR values did not exceed the 1.0 mSv/y Basic Safety Standard set for the masses by International Council on Radiation Protection (ICRP, 1999) and mean world average ECLR value of 1.16 x 10-3. Based on these results there are no radiation consequence to the scavengers, dumpsite workers and residents living around the dumpsites
