Vegetation Changes in Alberta Oil Sands, Canada, Based on Remotely Sensed Data from 1995 to 2020
There are rich oil and gas resources in Alberta oil sand mining area in Canada. In the 1960s, the Canadian government decided to increase the mining intensity. However, the exploitation will bring many adverse effects. In recent years, more people pay attention to the environmental protection and ecological restoration of mining areas, such as issues related to changes in vegetated lands. Thus, the authors used the Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-8 OLI remote sensing images as the basic data sources, and obtained the land cover classification maps from 1995 to 2020 by ENVI. Based on the NDVI, NDMI and RVI, three images in each period are processed and output to explore the long-term impact of exploitation. The results show that from 1995 to 2020, the proportion of vegetation around mining areas decreased sharply, the scale of construction land in the mining area increased, and the vegetated land was changed to land types such as tailings ponds, oil sand mines and other land types. In addition, three vegetation indexes decreased from 1995 to 2020. Although the exploitation of oil sand mining areas brings great economic benefits, the environmental protection (especially vegetation) in oil sand mining areas should be paid more attention
Elderly Fall Detection by Sensitive Features Based on Image Processing and Machine Learning
The world’s elderly population is growing every year. It is easy to say that the fall is one of the major dangers that threaten them. This paper offers a Trained Model for fall detection to help the older people live comfortably and alone at home. The purpose of this paper is to investigate appropriate methods for diagnosing falls by analyzing the motion and shape characteristics of the human body. Several machine learning technologies have been proposed for automatic fall detection. The proposed research reported in this paper detects a moving object by using a background subtraction algorithm with a single camera. The next step is to extract the features that are very important and generally describe the human shape and show the difference between the human falls from the daily activities. These features are based on motion, changes in human shape, and oval diameters around the human and temporal head position. The features extracted from the human mask are eventually fed in to various machine learning classifiers for fall detection. Experimental results showed the efficiency and reliability of the proposed method with a fall detection rate of 81% that have been tested with UR Fall Detection dataset
Office Bullying in the Philippines and the Need for Public Policy
There is an urgent need to solve the problem of workplace bullying in both private and government sectors. Bullying at work creates serious negative consequences to the victims and the organization affecting their productivity. The magnitude of the problem necessitates state intervention to correct market and government failures. This policy paper studies office bullying and the need to legislate to realize efficient and effective allocation of government and private resources. It is guided by the Constitutional mandate that maintenance of peace, harmony, health and safety at work is an inherent duty of the State because of its inherent power to issue orders and command obedience to mitigate its effects. Using Cost Benefit Analysis, Institutional Analysis to policy making, and Rational-Decision making as tools for analysis, crafting and passing upon a statute is the most feasible means to address the problem of workplace bullying. The need to legislate a national policy on workplace bullying is necessary to mitigate its negative consequences both to employees and organizational productivity. Office bullying as a public issue also requires strict monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of similar or related laws may also address the problems cause by the same destructive behaviors but are inadequately explored in many researches
Effect of Employee Orientation on Employee Performance in Commercial Banks in Nigeria
This study examined the effect of employee orientation and employee performance. Survey research design was employed. A sampled of three selected commercial banks in Enugu State, Nigeria. Data for the study were collected through questionnaire administered to the respondents. Using regression analysis, the result shows that employee orientation has a positive significant effect on employee performance of commercial banks in Enugu state, Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study recommended that bank management be able to properly plan and get ready for new hire orientation training in order to satisfy their expectations and create a basis for long-term employee happiness

Exploring the Perception of Job Quality among Banking Professionals: The Case of a Small Island Developing State
The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of the Mauritian banking sector (MBS) professionals on job quality with respect to their current jobs using the OECD Framework (2015). It attempts to fill an existing gap in the Job Quality literature by providing empirical evidence on job quality in the banking sector in a small island developing state like Mauritius. Not many, if any, of the studies conducted in the banking sector concentrate on job quality in a small island development state (SIDS) context. This exploratory study therefore made use of the qualitative interpretive research paradigm using semi-structured, face-to-face interviews. The population comprised of banking professionals at supervisory and managerial levels across different banking institutions in the island. Purposive sampling method was adopted using the snowball sampling technique which used the researcher’s judgment in locating the type of people who would provide rich information pertaining to job quality. 15 banking professionals agreed to take part in the study. Findings revealed that banking professionals in Mauritius better perceived recognition rather than earnings quality, and the social rather than physical work environment as major determinants of their job quality. They also opined that their job security was however based on their performance and willingness to learn and grow in the organisation. Appropriate recommendations were thus provided in the light of these findings
Chitosan-based Nanosystems as Drug Carriers
The formation and application of polymeric nanomaterials is great demandin science, industry, biotechnology, and medicine due to the possibility ofachieving a significant improvement in the physicochemical, mechanical,and barrier properties of polymers and using them as drug carriers andfillers, which is especially promising for biodegradable polymers such aschitosan and their derivatives. The article presents methods for creatingpolymer nanostructures based on polysaccharides and, in particular,chitosan. Obtaining nanostructured samples of chitosan using theapproaches of chemical transformation and modification of polysaccharidesis an urgent scientific problem, the solution of which makes it possible toobtain new polymer systems of great practical interest. The medical aspectsof the use of polymer carriers based on chitosan for the treatment of variousdiseases are discussed. The unique specificity of the properties of chitosanand nanomaterials derived from it, with the properties inherent in thisnatural polymer, can serve as a promising future, especially in the field ofmedicine

Inclusive Methods in Art Classroom for Students with Autism in China
Cultivating professional knowledge and developing specific inclusive training has always been important for educators in China. Within the context of special art education in China, art educators are supposed to adjust the instruction effectively for students with a variety of disabilities. This qualitative study sought to gain insight of the strategies of modifying and adapting art instruction for children with autism. Data were collected and analyzed by comparative method through interviews with three art educators. During the interview, three participants addressed strategies they use when working with autistic students in art classroom and proved the ways to modify and adapt art instruction to enhance autistic children’s pedagogical skills. Art teachers can also identify students’ preferred art materials to engage autistic students in learning art. Beyond helping my educational practice, this study could further serve as an impetus to assist other educators in China thus expand teachers’ professional knowledge in teaching children with special needs
Comparison of locomotion problems and its economic impact on Cobb and Ross broiler strains
The rapid weight gain and fast muscle growth due to intense genetic selection and improved nutrition for additional breast muscle in broiler commercial strains affect chickens health. In order to compare the main locomotive problems in broilers of Cobb and Ross strains, two pens from a commercial farm in Veracruz, Mexico were used. The first pen housed 16,500 males and 16,500 females of Cobb strain and the second one 16,500 males and 16,500 females of Ross strain. Chicks were checked for locomotion problems from day one until their sale. Animals with problems were recorded and necropsies were performed to identify the pathology. Out of 1406 animals with locomotive problems (2.13% of the total), 58.9% were Cobb and 41.1% Ross (P <0.05). The frequency of locomotive problems was 2.51% for Cobb and 1.75% for Ross. Most common individual lesions were osteochondrosis (38.61%), inflamed joints with purulent contents (37.13%), and valgus (19.65%). Locomotive problems appeared since the first week, but its number increased as birds gained weight, particularly from the fourth week on. Problems occurred more in males than in females and in Cobb birds than in the Ross strain. Economic loss due to locomotion problems was higher for the Cobb strain
