    Photosynthesis of Submerged and Surface Leaves of the Dwarf Water Lily (Nymphoides aquatica) Using PAM Fluorometry

    Dwarf Water Lilies (Nymphoides aquatica (J.F. Gmel) Kuntze have floating and submerged leaves. Some submerged aquatic vascular plants have a form of CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) called Submerged Aquatic Macrophyte (SAM) metabolism. Blue-diode based PAM technology was used to measure the Photosynthetic Oxygen Evolution Rate (POER: 1O2 ≡ 4e– ). Optimum Irradiance (Eopt), maximum POER (POERmax) and quantum efficiency (α0) all vary on a diurnal cycle. The shape of the POER vs. E curves is different in seedling, submerged and surface leaves. Both Eopt and POERmax are very low in seedling leaves (Eopt ≈ 104 μmol photon m–2 s–1, PPFD; POERmax ≈ 4.95 µmol O2 g–1 Chl a s–1), intermediate in mature submerged leaves (Eopt ≈ 419 µmol photon m–2 s–1 PPFD, POERmax ≈ 38.1 µmol O2 g–1 Chl a s–1) and very high in surface leaves (Eopt ≈ 923 µmol photon m–2 s–1 PPFD, POERmax ≈ 76.1 µmol O2 g–1 Chl a s–1). Leaf titratable acid (C4 acid pool) is too small (≈20 to 50 mol H+ m–3) to support substantial SAM metabolism. Gross daily photosynthesis of surface leaves is ≈3.71 g C m–2 d–1 in full sun and as much as 1.4 gC m–2 d–1 in shaded submerged leaves. There is midday inhibition of photosynthesis

    Psychological Health of Wives’ of Patients with Chronic Illnesses

    ABSTRACTObjectives: Chronic illnesses are more prevalent in males. The expectations of caregiving, thus falls on the women. Role expectations from women, increases stress, strain and the possibility of Psychological health concerns. In this paper, we explore the psychological health, as well as the levels of marital and sexual satisfaction of women caregivers.Method: The sample consisted of 35 women, whose husbands were diagnosed with, and undergoing treatment for a chronic illness (Coronary Heart Disease (CHD); Diabetes; or Cancer). Three standardized questionnaires, the Index of Marital Satisfaction (IMS), Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21 (DASS 21) were used.Results: Correlational and predictive analysis were conducted on the data. Clinically significant marital and sexual dissatisfaction were found. Wives’ also reported moderate levels of depression and anxiety, but severe levels of stress. Depression and Sexual satisfaction were found to be significant predictors of marital satisfaction.Discussion: Women caregiver are impacted by the illness status of their spouse. The additional stress of caregiving, along with societally ascribed roles and responsibilities on women creates a more difficult, stressful environment, which affects psychological health and well-being

    Psychological Complaints at Psychological Emergency Service Associated with Referral to Extended Screening in a Psychology School Clinic

    The Psychological Emergency Service (PES) at psychology school clinics is an unscheduled and free psychological service to meet urgent demands. From this service, some patients whose complaints require more time for clinical work are referred to the Extended Screening (ES), a modality composed of six extra appointments. This study aims to analyze the sociodemographic profile of patients seen on PES in a Brazilian Psychology School Clinic, and to identify the demands that motivated referral to the ES, for better qualification of the care offered. This is a descriptive analysis research, carried out based on data from the medical records of 46 patients who went through the PES and were referred to the ES at the institution, between the years 2019 and 2021. Sociodemographic data were collected and, from the session reports, a content analysis of the thematic analysis modality was performed to identify the complaints. The participants’ age ranged from 18 to 65 years, with a mean of 32.28 years (sd = 10.95). There was a predominance of female participants (71.74%), that completed High School (39.14%) and had an income from one to two Brazilian minimum wages (32.61%). The most frequent complaints were depressive symptoms (56.52%) and difficulties in interpersonal relationships (32.61%). The results obtained, besides allowing the survey of the social and demographic profile of the clientele of the PES at the Psychology School Clinic, and demonstrating its social relevance by providing free psychological care, also show to be of great importance for the definition of more accurate criteria for referral to the ES of patients seen on PES

    Psychometrics of the SDQ-I for Palestinian Adolescent Students

    The Self-description Questionnaire–I (SDQ–I) is a multidimensional instrument that measures eight self-concept facets hypothesized in Shavelson’s hierarchical model. This study investigated self-concept in a sample of Palestinian adolescent students using an Arabic version of the SDQ–I. Three-hundred sixty adolescents (163 girls and 197 boys) aged 13 to 16 years (M = 14.3, SD = .87) participated. The 72-item SDQ–I was administered in four Palestinian schools to assess the psychometric properties of the SDQ–I. This included the factor structure and the internal consistency reliability of the SDQ–I subscales and mean score responses of Palestinian self-concept. Factor analysis results, which accounted for the majority of the variance, supported an underlying general self-concept factor structure that demonstrated the eight factors that the SDQ–I is designed to measure. This is consistent with previous studies in similar age groups and the SDQ– I reliabilities were similar to those reported in the literature. Students perceived total self-concept positively (mean = 3.71). Three facets of self-concept (parent relations, reading, and general self-concept) indicated high positive selfconcept. Correlations among the different dimensions were consistent with the hierarchical structure in Shavelson’s model. Overall, the findings provided compelling support for Shavelson’s model, and the structure validity of Western self-concept measure. Interpretations were provided for the discrepancies regarding the Palestinian-Arab culture

    Spatial-temporal Evolution and Its Influencing Factors of Tourism Eco-efficiency in China

    Eco-efficiency is an invaluable indicator for the measurement of the relationship between production activities and environmental depletion. This study measures the tourism eco-efficiency of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2020 based on the super-efficiency SBM model, and explores its spatial-temporal evolution characteristics using the kernel density function, standard deviation ellipse, and center of gravity model. Then, the influencing factors of the tourism eco-efficiency in China are analyzed by Tobit regression model. The results show that the tourism eco-efficiency of China is generally fluctuating upwards, but has not yet reached the maximum production possibility frontier. The kernel density curve shows a unimodal-bimodal-unimodal pattern, while the inter-provincial differences have been decreasing and becoming more balanced. The center of gravity of tourism eco-efficiency is located at the junction of Henan and Hubei province and generally moves to the south (slightly to the southwest). Meanwhile, it is revealed that the level of economic development and the tourism eco-efficiency has a significant inverted U-shaped relationship. The level of economic openness, traffic conditions, and tourism eco-efficiency is positively correlated. The environmental regulations and industrial structure have a negative but limited impact on tourism eco-efficiency. Finally, recommendations and suggestions for policy formulation to promote quality and sustainable development of the tourism industry are put forward, such as increasing investment in ecological protection and governance in tourism development, improving capacity-building in allocating green and low-carbon technologies and resources, strengthening tourism infrastructure construction, and enhancing environmental governance systems and mechanisms

    What Influences Family Migration Decision of China’s New Generation Rural-urban Migrants? A Multilevel Logistic Regression Analysis

    The massive scale of new-generation rural-urban migrants in China has attracted extensive scholarly attention in recent years. While previous studies on China’s rural migrant workers focus on migrants’ individual settlement intentions, migrant’s family migration decision-making and the intergenerational differences between the old-generation migrants and new-generation migrants are underexplored. Based on the data of 2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey, this paper adopts a multilevel logistic regression approach to explore family and destination factors influencing family migration decision of China’s new generation rural migrant workers. The empirical results reveal that both the migrants’ family and destination attributes significantly influence their family migration decision. The demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of family have been pivotal factors underlying family migration decision of China’s new generation rural-urban migrants, while 16.9% of the chances is explained by between-destination differences. Self-employed migrants with housing properties in host cities, long migration duration and high-income level are more likely to migrate with their family members. Yet, the possibility of family migration is found to be significantly and negatively correlated with the age, education level, number of children and inter-provincial mobility of the new generation migrant workers. In addition, new generation rural-urban migrants’ family migration is more likely to be found in cities with service-oriented industry structure, better environmental quality, and higher hukou barriers which is possibly related to more job opportunities. These research findings not only complement the existing literature on China’s new generation rural-urban migrants, but also have important policy implications for reforming hukou system and enhancing social integration of rural-to-urban migrant population

    Advanced Method for Forecasting and Warning of Severe Convective Weather and Local-scale Hazards

    Hurricane Ida ferociously affected many south-eastern and eastern parts of the United States, making it one of the strongest hurricanes in recent years. Advanced forecast and warning tool has been used to track the path of the ex-Hurricane, Ida, as it left New Orleans on its way towards the northeast, accurately predicting significant supercell development above New York City on September 01, 2021. This advanced method accurately detected the area with the highest possible level of convective instability with 24-h lead time and even Level 5, devised in the categorical outlooks legend of the system. Therefore, an extreme level implied a very high probability of the local-scale hazard occurring above the NYC. Cloud model output fields (updrafts and downdrafts, wind shear, near-surface convergence, the vertical component of relative vorticity) show the rapid development of a strong supercell storm with rotating updrafts and a mesocyclone. The characteristic hook-shaped echo signature visible in the reflectivity patterns indicates a signal for a highly precipitable (HP) supercell with the possibility of tornado initiation. Open boundary conditions represent a good basis for simulating a tornado that evolved from a supercell storm, initialized with initial data obtained from a real-time simulation in the period when the bow echo and tornado-like signature occurred.     A Diagnostic Method for Fog Forecasting Using Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Model Outputs

    An attempt has been made in the present study to forecast fog with a diagnostic method using the outputs of global NWP model. The diagnostic method is based on the combination of thresholds of meteorological variables involved in fog formation. The thresholds are computed using the observations during fog. These thresholds are applied to the output of a global NWP model for forecasting fog. The occurrence of fog is a common phenomenon during winter season over the northern plains of India. The diagnostic method is used to predict fog occurrences over three stations in north India. The proposed method is able to predict both occurrences and non-occurrences of fog at all the three stations. It is found that 94% of the fog events forecasted by the model using the diagnostic method have been actually observed at the selected stations. The performance of method in predicting fog is found best over Delhi with the highest accuracy (0.61) and probability of detection (0.60). The study signifies that diagnostic approach based on the output of a global model is a useful tool for predicting fog over a single location

    Community economic empowerment is an important approach to realize a balanced, developing and just economic structure, to realize a successful economic empowerment, community business capacity must become strong and independent, and in sync with community’s best potential and product, in this paper is coastal community. The purpose of this study is how the main strategies and work programs that need to be taken to improve the economy of the community in Merauke Regency by optimally utilizing coastal community resources and knowing the inhibiting and supporting factors of empowerment. Qualitative research method with a SWOT analysis tool with a focus on data sources based on the results of interviews and discussions with the fisheries service and fisheries business actors. The results of the study explain that the increase in fisherman productivity has the highest weight value which is carried out by increasing the role of capital assistance and market intervention, verified by the efforts of coastal communities

    Study of Structural Characteristics of Cellulose Esters with Different Degrees of Substitution

    In this article, structural characteristics of amorphous mono-, di-, andtri-substituted esters of cellulose have been studied. These esters weresynthesized under homogenous conditions using anhydrides of variousaliphatic acids. The specific gravity of the highly substituted samples wasmeasured by a pycnometric method in the aqueous medium. To calculatethe molar, Van der Waals, and free volumes, as well as the packingcoefficient of amorphous esters the method of additive contributions ofpartial volumes of atoms and atom groups in the volumes of polymerswas used. Based on the molar volume, also specific gravity of celluloseesters was calculated. The coincidence of calculated and experimentalcharacteristics was shown. In addition, the relationship between glasstransition temperature and free volume was found for the esters. Thetheoretical equations were derived, which provide predicting the structuralcharacteristics of cellulose esters with different degrees of substitution
