Learner’s Dialect Use by EFL Instructors: A Study of Junior High School Teachers in a Minority Area of China
The use of learners’ L1 (first language) in the EFL classroom has been widely discussed in the literature. However, the use of local dialects has received less attention. Thus, this study investigates the use of Enshi dialect in EFL classroom in junior high schools in order to explore how teachers deploy the learners’ own dialect in EFL classroom and its effect. The Enshi dialect which is a variant of Mandarin is frequently used in daily life in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with 15 teachers who adopt Enshi dialect in EFL classroom teaching in junior high schools in 8 minority villages in Enshi. The results indicate that occasional dialect use does exist in EFL classroom teaching for junior high school students in ethnic minority areas. In addition, four main benefits are revealed when learners use dialects in EFL classes. Teaching English by using dialect helps students to improve the mastery of English grammar, distinguish pronunciation, understand the meaning of English words, phrases and sentences, and enliven the classroom atmosphere. The research also shows that the effective use of learners’ dialects in the EFL classroom plays positive roles in English learning
Identification of Medical and Industrial Used Radioisotopes in Mining Sites of Nasarawa, Nasarawa State, Nigeria
This research intends to unveil the presence of radioisotopes in the soil of some mining sites in Nasarawa of Nasarawa state using thermos-scientific interceptor (IdentiFINDER). The work aimed at detecting the presence, types and trust level of radioisotopes. The result showed that, 103Pd and 125I were found in 57% of the total points and the percentage abundance of the detector reached 50-65% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely found in the area, 109Cd was found in 15% of the total areas. The percentage abundance of the detector for 109Cd shows 50% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely to be found in the area, 241Am was found in 7% of the total areas. The percentage abundance of the detector for 241Am shows 81% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely found in the area, 235U was found in 7% of the total points. The percentage abundance of the detector for 235U reaches 57% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely found in the area, 75Se was found in 7% of the total points. The percentage abundance of the detector for 75Se was in abundance up to 57% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely gotten in the area and 57Co was gotten in 7% of the total areas. The percentage abundance of the detector for 57Co was 54% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely to be gotten in the area. Based on this high percentage abundance of the detector for these radioisotopes, they can be harnessed and applied appropriately in medicine and industry
Brief Inventory of Phytoseiidae (Parasitiformes) Found on Vegetable Crops in the Republic of Congo
According to the last revised catalogue of the mite family Phytoseiidae and the online Phytoseiidae database, only six species of predatory mites have been identified to date in the Republic of Congo (RC). Two species were reported on cassava (Manihot esculenta), two on coffee (Coffea spp.), one on lemon (Citrus spp.), and one on unidentified plants. In this study, we catalogued predatory mites on five plants of economic interest in the RC. Two hundred and forty-seven mite specimens were collected on Manihot esculenta, Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum melongena, Abelmoschus esculentus, and Capsicum spp. Traditional taxonomy was used to identify the collected specimens. The morphological characteristics of the females were analyzed, including the lengths of the dorsal setae, presence or absence of dorsal and ventrianal setae, shape of insemination apparatus, leg chaetotaxy, and cheliceral dentition. Six species belonging to two subfamilies (Phytoseiinae and Amblyseiinae) and five genera (Amblyseius, Euseius, Paraphytoseius, Phytoseius, and Iphiseius) were identified. Among these six species, only one had previously been observed in the RC; the remaining five species are reported
Perspectives Concerning SARS-CoV-2 Transmission for the Application of the Livestock Breeding
Viral transmission between animals and humans has been defined as Zoonosis and zooanthroponosis. The vaccine has been claimed to be the best tool to prevent viral epidemics. However, as learned from SARSCoV-2, vaccines cannot be the true answer to prevent viral infection for everyone. Some vaccinated persons are still reported to get infected. Viral mutation has been principally postulated to explain immune evasion. Questionable, why the mutated viral strain does not evade the immunity of everyone who has been vaccinated? Mutated viral strains cause various symptoms, nonsymptomatic to morbidity and mortality, in different individuals with more or less the same ratio as the original SARS-CoV-2. Approximately, 25-35% of the SARSCoV-2 detected individuals are asymptomatic, while 15- 20% developed severity and about 2-5% have critical symptoms [1,2]. Logically, the viral mutation could keep mutating in any part of its genome. The new variant might maintain infectivity in the same person and might develop to infect another person who once has not been susceptible to the original strain. Thus, the dynamics of viral infection could change from time to time. This requires a better explanation to lead us in the right direction to prevent the emergent virus either now or in the future

Insecticidal Activity of Crude Extracts of Hyptis suaveolens (Bush Mint) on Anopheles Mosquitoes Collected from Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria
Anopheles gambiae is a vector that is responsible for the transmission of malaria parasites which causes high morbidity and mortality in Nigeria and the world at large. Human-vector contact can be reduced by the use of conventional repellents being sold in the market, though some of these repellent are not environmentally friendly and An. gambiae have developed resistance to some of these repellents. To this end, the phytochemical constituents and insecticidal activity of crude extracts of Hyptis suaveolens (bush mint) was determined on adult An. gambiae mosquitoes collected from Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria to evaluate its effect in controlling them. Here, 70% ethanolic and diethyl ether fat crude extracts were made from H. suaveolens dried leaves and used to carry out the experiment. The phytochemical screening of the ethanol extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoid, saponins, tannins, steroids and reducing sugar. Glycoside was not detected in the ethanol extract. Only steroids was detected in diethyl ether extract the rest of the phytochemical tested were absent. An. gambiae larvae were collected from the field and were raised to F1 progeny adults that were used for the study. WHO protocol for carrying out human bait repellency cage test was used. Human hand treated with the extracts was exposed to a cage containing 30 female mosquitoes for each of the extracts respectively. The ethanolic crude extract treatment proved to be more effective in repelling mosquitoes with 0% (0/30) mosquito landing than diethyl ether extract which had 40% (12/30) mosquitoes landing and the control hand (untreated left hand) had the highest landing rate 63.3% (19/30) which showed very high significant difference (χ2 = 27.2619, df = 2, P <0.00001) in relation to the treatments. After 24 hours holding period, the mortality rate of exposed mosquitoes was observed to be highest in the ethanolic treatment 73.3% (22/30). In conclusion, H. suaveolens extracts have repellency potential in controlling adult An. gambiae
Composition and Distribution of Mosquito Vectors in a Peri-Urban Community Surrounding an Institution of Learning in Lafia Metropolis, Nasarawa State, Central Nigeria
Vector surveillance is very key in solving mosquito-borne health problems in Nigeria. To this end, the composition and distribution of mosquito vectors in a peri-urban community surrounding an institution of learning in Lafia metropolis, Nasarawa State, Central Nigeria was carried out between December 2016 and June 2017. The Prokopack Aspirator was used to collect indoor resting mosquitoes between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. from 30 randomly selected houses. Mosquitoes collected were knocked down and transferred into a well labelled petri-dish and taken to the laboratory for processing. A total of 664 mosquitoes were collected which spread across Culex quinquefasciatus 572 (86.14%), Anopheles gambiae 88 (13.25%) and Aedes aegypti 4 (0.60%). The abundance of mosquitoes in relation to seasons, species, sex, abdominal conditions as well as transmission indices across seasons significantly varied (P < 0.05). But, the distribution of mosquito in relation to house types showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). The inhabitants of the area should ensure that all drainages flow through so as to reduce mosquito breeding grounds. Also, members of the community should always protect themselves by sleeping under insecticide treated bed nets
Influence of Pre-Saturation of Gravel on the Mechanical Properties of Concrete
In this study, the laboratory tests on the influence of pre-saturation of gravel on the mechanical properties of concrete were carried out. The study accessed the specific gravity, water absorption capacity, the impact and the crushing values of the coarse aggregates. Also, this study determined and compared the compressive strengths of concrete produced with the presaturated gravel and the dry natural gravel. The results of the compressive strength comparisons have revealed that about 10.8%, 5.6%, 9.4%, and 28.4% reductions in compressive strengths when the samples prepared with pre-saturated and natural aggregates were crushed at 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, and 28 days curing periods respectively. Thus, pre-saturation of aggregate has a negative impact on the strength of the concrete. This study recommends that the pre-saturated aggregate be avoided/treated as much as possible in concrete production because it has a negative impact on the compressive strength of the concrete. That is, it reduces the compressive strength at different curing periods
Increase of Trigonelline in Trigonella persica Plant under Drought Stress
Trigonella persica is a valuable medicinal plant which comprises trigonelline that is secondary metabolite and important component in cosmetic and medicine. This research was conducted in order to evaluation the drought stress effect on growth parameters, root anatomical changes and trigonelline content in T. persica. Plants were grown under soil moisture corresponding to 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% field capacity for two weeks. The data showed that drought stress was significantly decreased fresh weight and dry weight of shoot and root. In addition, leaf area was declined due to drought stress. Interestingly, root length was enhanced by drought stress. Root microscopic study demonstrated that drought stress increased thickness of epidermal, endodermal, vascular bundle, central cylinder and parenchyma in T. persica. Drought stress caused a significant increment in alkaloid and trigonelline content in aerial parts and roots of T. persica. These results revealed that T. persica responded to drought stress by increasing the alkaloid and trigonelline, as well as the anatomical changes in root. Considering the importance of trigonline and alkaloids, this work may open prospects for production of the pharmaceutically valuable secondary metabolites thereby drought stress
Evaluation of Tomato Hybrids for Resistance against Tomato Mosaic Virus (ToMV)
Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) drastically affects the tomato production worldwide. To deal with this problem, breeding of ToMV-resistant hybrids/varieties is the ultimate need and most successful approach. In wild tomato species, three dominant ToMV-resistant genes (Tm-1, Tm-2 and Tm-22 ) were identified and the World Vegetable Center developed few fresh market tomato lines resistant to ToMV by the introgression of these genes. Recently at Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology, Faisalabad, Pakistan a breeding programme was initiated to develop high yielding and ToMV tolerant hybrids using these lines. Current study was performed to screen elite F1 hybrids carrying Tm gene along with their parents against ToMV using mechanical inoculation, confirmation of the virus using DAS-ELISA and marker assisted selection of hybrids. Out of 28 hybrids and 17 parent accessions/genotypes, eight hybrids and five accessions were found to be highly resistant and the virus was not detected in DAS-ELISA. Five hybrids were resistant, nine hybrids and four genotypes were tolerant, while the remaining six hybrids and eight genotypes were susceptible. For the confirmation of Tm-22 gene, the tomato hybrids and their parents were subjected to molecular analysis using cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) primers. The result of CAPS markers for the confirmation of Tm-22 gene was found consistent with phenotypic data of the inoculated tomato genotypes/ hybrids. Higher phenolic content, total soluble proteins, better CAT and SOD activities were positively correlated with resistance. Screening results based on phenotype, biochemical and molecular marker data indicate that hybrids carrying Tm-22 gene are good sources of resistance against ToMV
