    Road Kills of Bufotes viridis (Laurenti, 1768): A Case Study from Konya Province of Turkey

    The present study reports vehicle collisions of Bufotes viridis (The green toad) in Konya province from Turkey. Our study was performed in more than fifty localities on Yunak-Akşehir highway (D-695). The records were taken in a short time; it is important and remarkable to come across a large number of dead individuals of an amphibian species in a short time. Among all recorded mortalities (n= 246), the highest value belonged to subadults (45% of the cases), followed by juveniles (35% of the cases). The lowest rate among the carcasses was belonged to the adult individuals (20% of the cases). There can be many factors that cause the road kills: These factors are grouped according to the literature under the headings of “direct causes”, “indirect causes” and “potential causes” for the road kills. In this study, we evaluated the effects of some factors for Bufotes viridis. In general, all terrestrial and semi-aquatic amphibian species, which populations are located the roadsides, suffer from road kills. Because of this situation, there is a need for both further studies and habitat restorations for amphibians

    Parasitic Copepods on Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio, L. 1758) from Gradche Reservoir (Macedonia)

    During the parasitological examinations of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio, L. 1758) from the Gradche Reservoir (Macedonia), a total of 126 fish samples were examined, from which parasite infestation was determined in 87 fish (69.05%). In this research, the following parasitic copepods were identified: Ergasilus sieboldi, Ergasilus briani, and Lernaea cyprinacea. Ergasilus sieboldi was found on gills of common carp, with a prevalence of 1.461%, while the mean intensity was 2.357. Ergasilus briani was found on fins of common carp, with a prevalence of 1.879%, while the mean intensity was 38.274. Lernaea cyprinacea was found on the fins of common carp, with a prevalence of 0.552%, while mean intensity was 2,000. Our findings of Ergasilus sieboldi, Ergasilus briani, and Lernaea cyprinacea in common carp are considered as first records for Macedonia. At the same time, common carp is a new host for Ergasilus briani in Macedonian waters

    Health Effects of Radiation Exposure to Human Sensitive Organs Across Some Selected

    The interaction of ionizing radiation with human body, either from external sources (i.e. outside the body) or from internal contamination of the body by radioactive substances, leads to biological effects which may later show up as clinical symptoms. The nature and severity of these symptoms and the time at which they appear depend on the amount of radiation absorbed and the rate at which it is received. This study aimed at assessing the Health Effects of Radiation Exposure to Human Sensitive Organs across Some Selected Mining Sites of Plateau State Nigeria. Finding of this study have revealed that the mean Dorgan values for the lungs, ovaries, bone marrow, testes, kidney, liver and whole body for different mining points of Plateau State are 0.29, 0.26, 0.31, 0.36, 0.28, 0.21 and 0.30 mSv/y respectively. From the findings presented, it can be concluded that the background radiation in Plateau State is not an issue of health concern in regards to sensitive organs and may not course immediate health effect except when accumulated over long period of time which may cause cancer to the indoor members on approximately seventy years of exposure

    Effect of Additional Feed Supplement Fermentation Shrimp Waste Extract on Digestibility in Sentul Chicken Growth Phase

    This study aims to determine the effect of adding feed supplements of fermented shrimp waste extract in the ration on the digestibility of local chicken rations in the growth phase. The research was carried out in Jatinangor District as well as the Laboratory of Ruminant Animal Nutrition and Animal Feed Chemistry, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Padjadjaran University, Sumedang. The method used in this study was experimental with a Complete Randomized Design (RAL). The data were analyzed by fingerprint test (ANOVA) with further tests using the Dunnet test. The object of this study consisted of 20 Sentul chickens raised from the age of 1 day to 12 weeks, divided into 5 treatments and 4 tests. The treatment consists of P0 = Basal ration without the addition of feed supplement fermented shrimp waste extract, P1 = Basal ration + 0.5% feed supplement fermented shrimp waste extract, P2 = Basal ration + 1.0% feed supplement fermented shrimp waste extract, P3 = Basal ration + 1.5% feed supplement fermented shrimp waste extract, and P4 = Basal ration + 2.0% feed supplement fermented shrimp waste extract. The changes observed are the digestibility of dry matter, the digestibility of organic matter, and the digestibility of proteins. The results showed that the addition of feed supplements for fermented shrimp waste extract had a significantly different influence on the digestibility of dry matter, the digestibility of organic matter, and the digestibility of protein. This study concludes that the addition of a feed supplement of 2% fermented shrimp waste extract in the ration can produce a high ration digestibility value for Sentul chicken in the growth phase

    Characteristics of Ordinary Portland Cement Paste Containing Rice Husk Ash and Conplast

    An experimental investigation on rice husk ash (RHA) and Conplast SP 430 (CP-admixture) was carried out to evaluate their effects on the paste characteristics (soundness, consistency, initial and final setting times). The cement content used was 300g and the brand was ‘Ashaka’ Portland cement conforming to BS EN 12 1973. Various combinations of the mixtures OPC-RHA-CP-admixture were used to establish performance characteristics of the pastes. Statistical characteristics, and linear regression models (no-transformation, λ = 0.5, and Box-Cox transformation) were developed on the experimental data for decisions on their performances.

    Effect Of Quartz Particle Size and Cement Replacement on Portland Limestone Cement properties

    This research focuses on investigating the effect of quartz particle size and cement replacement on their physicomechnical properties. Portland limestone cement (PLC) was employed and replaced with quartz powder (QP) at various particle sizes (1.19 mm, 425 µm, 300 µm, 212 µm, <212 µm) and cement replacement between 2.5 wt.% ~ 15 wt.% at interval of 2.5 wt.% to study their impact on the cement properties. The PLC chemical composition revealed a relatively low lime and high silica content compared to the conventional cement. QP revealed a high silica, lime and sulphur contents compared to natural sand. A high consistence, elongated setting times and lower strengths and specific gravities were observed as cement was replaced with QP at a given particle size respectively. The effect of replacing cement with QP content between 2.5 wt.% and 15 wt.% at various particle sizes resulted in average increments by 45.32%, 23.13% and 36.06% for initial setting time, final setting time and water demand respectively. This increase could be related with clinker diminution coupled with enhanced QP surface area and clinker diminution. Similarly, an increase in the QP surface area at a given cement replacement led to higherwater consistence, retarded setting times and lower strength. The effect of enhancing the QP’surface area between 1.19 mm and below 212 µm at a given cement replacement resulted in average increments by 26.27%, 8.61% and 7.49% for initial and final setting times and water demand respectively. The strength gain of the QP cement blend diminished significantly above 30% up to 15 wt.% cement replacement especially beyond 3 days. The low strength could be due to the high-water consistence linked with silica content resulting in setting time retardation. The optimal QP content was determined at 5 wt.% owing to the fact that the physicomechnical properties did not significantly deviate from the properties of control

    Geo-spatial Analysis of the Impacts of Urbanization-induced Activities on Soil Quality in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Rivers State-Nigeria

    The study examined the impacts of urbanization-related activities on soil quality in Port Harcourt Metropolis-Rivers state, Nigeria. Experimental and survey research designs were implored in the study utilizing GIS and spatial analysis approaches. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used. The primary data were generated through laboratory analysis of soil samples from 15 randomly selected sites within the metropolis;and 800 valid copies of socio-economic questionnaire administered to 800 respondents. Also, public hospitals were visited to ascertain the commonest soil borne diseases in the area. Four research questions, four specific objectives and two hypotheses guided the study. The hypotheses were tested with one sample t-test and one sample chi square using SPSS. Standard scientific and laboratory procedures were followed in the collection and analysis of soil samples. Findings of the study include: urbanization-related activities (e.g. waste dumpsites, mechanic workshops, abattoirs, etc.) cause significant changes on soil quality in the area; and this result to the emergence of soil borne diseases (e.g. Vascular witts, Ascaris lumbricoids,Trichuris trichiura, Strongloids stereoralis) which affects residents’wellbeing. However, there is significant difference in the perceived socioeconomic effects of the diseases across the area. Specifically, laboratory results for soil analysis show that (mean values): pH 7.22, temperature 25.62 °C, PO4 0.342 mg/kg, Pb 120.62 mg/kg, K 66.81 mg/kg, NO3 mg/kg. The study recommended for enforcement of physical planning and development control laws; regular evaluation of the quality of the soil, and restriction on the location of mechanic workshops and waste dumpsites around the metropolis

    Types, Distribution Characteristics, and Development Strategies of Rural Characteristic Industry in Xi’an Metropolitan Area

    China’s urbanization development has entered the “second half”, which is at a critical stage of transition from the middle stages to the mature stage. The metropolitan area formed by the mega-city radiating the development of surrounding cities and counties is an important spatial carrier of urbanization. The rural characteristic industry is the main path to promote regional economic development and urban-rural integration in the metropolitan area. Exploring the development characteristics of rural characteristic industries in the metropolitan area has important theoretical and practical signifi cance for promoting the eff ective connection between urban-rural integration and rural revitalization of the metropolitan area and improving the development quality of the metropolitan area. Take the Xi’an metropolitan area as an example and adopt kernel density analysis and other methods to reveal the spatial diff erentiation rules of rural characteristic industries. On this basis, the three-dimensional development strategy of “industry-spatial-institutional” for the development of the rural characteristic industry is proposed, to provide theoretical reference for the development of rural characteristic industry in metropolitan areas.

    Ensemble Cloud Model Application in Simulating the Catastrophic Heavy Rainfall Event

    An attempt has been made in the present research to simulate a deadly flash-flood event over the City of Skopje, Macedonia on 6 August 2016. A cloud model ensemble forecast method is developed to simulate a super-cell storm's initiation and evolutionary features. Sounding data are generated using an ensemble approach, that utilizes a triple-nested WRF model. A three-dimensional (3-D) convective cloud model (CCM) with a very fine horizontal grid resolution of 250-m is initialized, using the initial representative sounding data, derived from the WRF 1-km forecast outputs. CCM is configured and run with an open lateral boundary conditions LBC, allowing explicit simulation of convective scale processes. This preliminary study showed that the ensemble approach has some advantages in the generation of the initial data and the model initialization. The applied method minimizes the uncertainties and provides a more qualitative-quantitative assessment of super-cell storm initiation, cell structure, evolutionary properties, and intensity. A high-resolution 3-D run is capable to resolve detailed aspects of convection, including high-intensity convective precipitation. The results are significant not only from the aspect of the cloud model's ability to provide a qualitative-quantitative assessment of intense precipitation but also for a deeper understanding of the essence of storm development, its vortex dynamics, and the meaning of micro-physical processes for the production and release of large amounts of precipitation that were the cause of the catastrophic flood in an urban area. After a series of experiments and verification, such a system could be a reliable tool in weather services for very short-range forecasting (nowcasting) and early warning of weather disasters
