    A Cultural and Artistic Approach to Early Childhood Science Education%253A Shadow Play

    Attitudes towards science and scientific perspectives in the future depend on early childhood science experiences. Preservice teachers who are provided with the opportunity to develop positive attitudes and self-efficacy towards science teaching before they enter professional life are more likely to help preschoolers develop positive attitudes towards science in their professional life. The aim of this 12-week study was, therefore, to determine the effect of a shadow play workshop on early childhood preservice teachers self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes towards science teaching and to investigate their workshop experiences and application processes. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. The sample consisted of 24 first-year early childhood preservice teachers. Quantitative data were collected using the Early Childhood Teachers Attitudes Toward Science Teaching (TSAS) and the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI) and were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and the dependent sample t-test. Qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews and observations and were analyzed using content analysis. Results showed that shadow play had a positive effect on participants self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes towards science teaching, indicating that shadow play is an interesting, fun, and effective material that can be used in early childhood science education to turn abstract concepts into concrete forms. Results were discussed with reference to literature, and recommendations were made for future studies

    Turkish Adaptation of Online Teaching Effectiveness Scale

    With this study, it is aimed to adapt the Online Teaching Effectiveness Scale into Turkish Language. The adaptation process has been done within four study groups. The first group took part in the study after having the Turkish form of the scale as required according to the translation steps. The study has been done with the MCBU Faculty of Education during the 2021 Spring Term. With the first study group, language validity was ensured with 30 participants by applying the Turkish and English versions of the scale in an interval of two weeks. According to language validity findings the Spearmans Rank Order Correlation value has been found above .70. Then pilot study has been done with second group with 62 participants. The total correlation values of the items are between .55 and .80. The third group consisted of 436 participants and after second run the CFA results are found like that%253B chi%253Bsup2%253B %252F df %253D 3.582, RMSEA %253D .80, SRMR %253D .35%253B CFI %253D .95%253B TLI %253D .94, NNFI %253D .95. With the third study group the validation study has been finished and continued to reliability study. The fourth and the last group which consisted of 96 participants and the applications has been done in an interval of three weeks. According to the Cronbachs Alpha values each of the dimensions and the total of the scale have points between .70 and .97. The test ndash%253B retest values are between .72 and .94. Based on the findings the Turkish version of the scale is valid and reliable for usage

    Informal Effect of The Biographical Film on The Views of Prospective Science Teachers on Nature of Science

    In this study, the effects of a documentary and a biographical film, which was watched in an informal environment, on the prospective science teachers nature of science (NOS) views were examined. The study conducted according to the mixed research methodology. The data were obtained through the open-ended questionnaire prepared by considering the consensus aspects of the NOS. The participants were shown a documentary-style biographical film about a cross-section of the life of a famous scientist. The findings show that there are changes in the participants%252339%253B views on some of the consensus aspects of the nature of science. Some of these were in the desired direction, but the retention was weak. Also, some of the changes are in an undesirable direction such as to create a science myth. According to the results, it can be thought that films adapted from the history of science can be used to teach the nature of science. Since films produced for different purposes such as art and entertainment may cause problems in teaching the nature of science, it can be suggested to use such films in a more structured learning environment

    Prospective Teachers Views on Story Use in Social Studies Teaching

    Including literature and various disciplines, social studies courses given with literary works during the course allow students to develop their intellectual skills and increase interest in the course. The story which has an essential place in the literary products used in the course of social studies possess a facilitating effect on the transfer of social rules and culture to younger generations, helps students understand different ages and places, and plays a role on making divisions between the true and false or the good and evil. Hence, it is crucial to select the right story with the appropriate content for the course. In this sense, the research aims to determine prospective teachers views on story usage in social studies lessons. A case study pattern was adopted within the scope of the descriptive approach. The study group consists of 19 prospective teachers in the final year in Social Studies Education Department at state university in Turkey (Kafkas University).A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher was used in collecting the data. The researcher utilized descriptive and inferential codes that emerged during the analysis to explain the qualitative data and correlations. In light of the data, prospective teachers stated that the stories to be used in the social studies course should be appropriate for the social studies course achievement and grade level. Additionally, the participant teachers think that stories can be useful in ensuring the permanence of the information learned and drawing attention during the lesson. Also, prospective teachers expressed that the stories that are not used correctly and effectively could interfere with the course%252339%253Bs goals or distract students

    The Effect of Cooperative Learning Methods and Individual Learning Method on Pre-Service Science Teachers Sub-Micro Level Conceptual Understanding at Equilibrium Chemistry

    The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of cooperative and individual learning methods on the conceptual understanding at sub-micro level of pre-service science teachers (PST) in equilibrium chemistry. The study was conducted on 52 PSTs. A pre-test%252Fposttest non-equivalent quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Data collection instruments used as pre- and posttest as a Module Test (MT) consisted of seven open-ended questions developed by the researchers. Although, participants were identified with a convenience sampling method, each groups were randomly assigned. For this reason, three study groups were selected and each implementation was randomly assigned. Groups was determined as Cooperative Student Teams-Achievement Divisions(STAD, E1) and Reading-Writing-Application (RWA, E2) methods, and Individual Learning (IL, E3) method. The statistical analyses of the quantitative data were performed using Kruskal Wallis test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The data gathered with the MT were evaluated using content analysis. According to findings, there was not a significance difference among groups related to conceptual understandings at equilibrium chemistry. However, some misconceptions related to topic were decreased. Consequently, when three learning methods are used that it is more likely to misconceptions of the PSTs will be treated, while at the same time micro level understanding will improve

    The Effect of Drama Course on Prospective Primary and Preschool Teachers Communication Skills

    This research aims to determine the effect of the drama course on the communication skills of prospective primary and preschool teachers. In the research, a one group pretest-posttest model was used before the pilot-test. The research population of the study was 140 third-grade prospective teachers who studied at Afyon Kocatepe University Faculty of Education Primary and Preschool Education program and took drama lessons. Since the entire population was available for research, sampling was intentionally omitted. Communication Skills Scale developed by Korkut, Owen and Bugay (2014) was used as the data collection tool in the research. In the data analysis, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used in the comparison of the difference between two pairs in dependent groups. In the comparison of binary groups, Mann Whitney U Test was applied. It was concluded that there was a significant difference in favour of the posttest among the pretest and posttest scores obtained from the Communication Skills Scale and its sub-dimensions of the prospective Primary and Pre-school teachers who took the drama course in the research and favour of the female prospective teachers among the pretest and total scores. It is also concluded that there is no significant difference between pretest and posttest score differences between Primary and Preschool prospective teachers

    The Effect of the Use of Discussion Types on the Listening Skills of Convicts %252F Prisoners in Training-Improvement Activities Applied in Criminal Execution Institutions

    Training and rehabilitation activities for convicts and detainees are of utmost importance for a states national policy in terms of their targeted lives after release. The purpose of this study is to put forward whether socio-cultural activities such as debate, panel, forum, open session used in education and training activities for the rehabilitation works performed for prisoners are effective in practice or not and making detections on the issue that activities related with improving the listening skills of prisoners can be improved or not. This research was carried out with 122 volunteer participants selected with random method from convicts%252Fdetainees in penal institutions of Bursa province who graduated from primary school, secondary school, high school and university. The study has been analyzed by five different achievements tests which have been designed by the researcher to measure the ability to understand the listening comprehension success and it has been analyzed with a statistical analysis software. The study reveals that with the use of discussion types the success of convicts%252Fprisoners in listening comprehension has showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test

    Perceptions of Parents Having Children in Preschool Level Regarding Their Childrens Screen Use

    The perception of parents on childrens screen use is expected to affect their childrens screen usage and understanding the perception of parents about this subject can help in the preparation of roadmaps to show how children should use screen. The aim of this study is examine to the perception of the parents about positive and negative effects of screen use on their children, and to compare childrens actual screen use and the ideal screen use proposed by parents. The data conducting an interview one of the method of qualitative research. Participants comprised of 25 parents while 20 of them were mother, 5 of them were father, age range is between 26 to 43, have high-education and with child in preschool level. Although parents reported both positive and negative perceptions about screen usage the views that screen use adversely affects children are more distinct. While parents see knowledge %252F skills acquisition as the most positive side of the screen%253B the most downside is that they see the child%252339%253Bs social isolation. In addition, there are remarkable differences between the use of screen that parents see as ideal for their children and the current screen usage of children

    The Effect of Teacher Evaluation and Self-Evaluation on Pre-service Teachers%252339%253B Inquiry-Based 5E Lesson Plan Design and Teaching Practice

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of teacher evaluation and self-evaluation on the experience of designing and applying lesson plans according to the 5E inquiry model and pre-service teachers views regarding the 5E inquiry lesson planning and teaching practice. It was designed as the embedded mixed method. Total of 60 pre-service science teachers participated in this study. The data collected by the 5E Lesson Plan rubric for inquiry-based teaching which developed by Goldston et al., (2013), self-evaluation form, and interviews. In the analysis of quantitative data, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and Spearmans Rank Correlation, which are among the nonparametric tests, were used. Content analysis was performed in the analysis of qualitative data. Results showed that the average score of pre-service teachers lesson plans is higher in the second plans. It has been determined that self-evaluation contributes to better planning of the process. The pre-service teachers stated that the 5E inquiry model was particularly strong %252F effective and their lesson plans phases of explain and explore were weak. In line with the results obtained in the research, suggestions were made to evaluate and develop the lesson planning and teaching practice according to the 5E inquiry model

    Investigation of the Use of Electronic Portfolios in the Determination of Student Achievement in Higher Education Using the Many-Facet Rasch Measurement Model

    This study aimed to determine the rater behavior in the evaluation process of student electronic portfolios used to measure student achievement in higher education, and thus to evaluate the usability of the electronic portfolio system. Considering that rater behavior adversely affects both validity and reliability in determining the performance of individuals, it is important to identify the effect of this factor and evaluate the related results in line with this effect. The data of the study were collected from the students enrolled in an English language teaching program at Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty within the scope of the measurement and assessment course in the fall semester of 2017-2018. An analytic rubric developed by the researchers was used in the evaluation of the student electronic portfolios. The study included two participants groups consisting of three raters and 61 students (11 male, 50 female). In the analysis of the data, the many-facet Rasch measurement model was used as an analysis method since it was appropriate for the nature of the current data set. When the findings of the study were examined, it was found that one or more rater behaviors interfered with the performance of the individual in the use of non-objective measurement tools, and consequently negatively affected the validity and reliability of the measurements. In conclusion, it can be stated that the individuals performance related to electronic portfolios in higher education is generally affected by the rater behavior in the evaluation process independent of the measurement tool. In addition, it has been confirmed that electronic portfolios can be used to determine individual performance in higher education
