Consent and Resistance: Indonesian Corona-Inspired Islamic Music in the Wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked the production of corona-inspired Islamic music in Indonesia. Interestingly, against the backdrop of chaos and uncertainty, the genre appears to have transcended mere value-added entertainment and can be viewed as a tool that operates with or against power. Using Stuart Hall\u27s concept of culture and power, this study aims to examine how popular culture such as this is utilized by the elites and the ordinary. This is qualitative research using content analysis, and the data were taken from the lyrics and live performances of Bimbo with their song “Corona” and Audul Marom rebana group with “Sirahku Mumet Sirahmu Piye.” This research found that corona-inspired Islamic music is not just an aesthetic call to surrender to God in the face of crisis. Instead, it acts as a vehicle for cultural adaptation by authorities and a platform for expressing dissent among the ordinary. Bimbo’s “Corona” and its involvement in the government-sponsored fundraising concerts exemplify efforts to mitigate public distrust during the pandemic. In contrast, the “Sirahku Mumet Sirahmu Piye” reproduced and popularized by a local rebana group from Demak echoes the plight of the lower classes, articulating the economic burden of the commoners due to COVID-19 measures

PEREMPUAN SEBAGAI OBJEK MALE GAZE PEMBACA: TELAAH KRITIS KARYA SASTRA FEMINIS PEREMPUAN INDONESIA

Since the fall of Suharto in May 1998, women\u27s involvement in literature has increased rapidly, causing a rush of feminist themes and content in literary works in this period. However, the literary works of women writers, even female feminists, are still unable to escape the tendency to objectify women. This research will show that in the works of female feminist writers, female characters are still displayed as objects of the reader’s male gaze. Four novels will be studied, namely Perempuan Berkalung Sorban and Geni Jora by Abidah El Khalieqy, and Tabula Rasa and Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala. This study is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out using the literature study method, namely by reading carefully and thoroughly the four material object novels. Collected data will be analyzed using the Male Gaze Theory by Laura Mulvey. According to the Male Gaze Theory, women are constantly looked at, watched, and displayed, with a certain appearance that has a strong visual and sexual influence so that they are referred to as to-be-looked-at-ness. The results of this study show that in the four novels, there are two repeated patterns, that consistently place women as objects of the reader’s male gaze, namely (1) the exposure of women\u27s intimate organs in an erotic context and (2) beautiful and detailed descriptions of women\u27s faces and bodies

“Sinkretisme” dalam Upacara Tradisi Buka Luwur Sunan Kudus

Abstract: The aim of this research is to analyze syncretism in the Buka Luwur Makam Sunan Kudus ceremonial tradition, focusing on the public\u27s perception of ceremonial objects involved in the ritual. This research is field-based and employs qualitative methods. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and analytically using a hermeneutic-philosophical approach. The findings indicate that the Buka Luwur event, held from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram, encompasses a variety of activities ranging from ritual-magical practices to socio-economic events. Most supporters of this tradition believe that ceremonial objects used in the procession—such as water for cleaning the Cinthaka keris, the Buka Luwur cloth, cricket rice, and Asyura porridge—can bring blessings. These blessings are believed to include facilitating sustenance, curing illness, and enhancing crop fertility. This belief emerges from the blending of Islamic and Javanese cultural values in the tradition. The research aims to provide insights that can help organizers evaluate the tradition and minimize the potential for syncretic beliefs by offering correct education and understanding to the public.

The Media Construction on Heretical Religious Teachings at Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding Schools: A Study of the Media

This article aims to explore the issue of heretical deviations in the Al-Zaytun Islamic boarding school constructed by four online media sources: metro.suara.com, bandung.viva.co.id, rejabar.republik.co.id, and merdeka.com which had intensely reported on this controversy for weeks. It is intended to reveal what actually occurred in the institution and analyze how these media framed the issue critically. This study uses Norman Fairclough\u27s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model through three levels of analysis: critical language analysis, subjective interpretation of the discourse practices, and relevant information on the media\u27s sociocultural practices. This research found that the media\u27s claim that al-Zaytun Islamic boarding school engaged in radicalism is a construction of pseudo-reality. The text narrative is unclear, and the news facts are blurred, containing bias and prone to debates. The findings reveal that the actual reality constructed by the four online media is the contestation of elite groups over the discourse on heretical teachings against Al-Zaytun Islamic boarding schools

MULTILINGUALISME DAN GENDER DALAM LANSKAP LINGUISTIK USAHA PANGKAS RAMBUT DI KECAMATAN JOMBANG

    No full text
In multilingual societies of former Western colonies, modernism is often pinned on English as the international lingua franca, thus shifting the mother tongue/regional language which is considered of lower value. In the discussion of post-structuralism, language use contributes to identity construction, one of which is gender identity. Inequality of gendered cultural expectations in multilingualism is problematic as it reasons gender disparities in the workforce, among many others. Using a mixed method of quantitative and qualitative study, this research investigates patterns of language dominance on public signs belonging to space with the concept of gender segregation, specifically salons/barber shops, in the urban area of Jombang Regency, that is Jombang sub-district, through a Linguistic Landscape (LL) study. In result, all signs with the target market of women, men, and both display the call for modernism through constant use of English and Indonesian language, which notably overrides Javanese as the mother tongue and everyday language of the people. However, multilingualism in women exhibits the “new economic pattern” where education and work opportunities are equal/almost equal. Even so, there appears to be an indication of higher expectations for men to be capable of understanding English than women through significant use of monolingual English signs.
