Autologous Islet Cell Transplantation-Future Forward Approach to Eliminating Long-Term Insulin Use
A literature search was done with interest in a patient that I encountered during one of my clinical rotations. It is a future-forward robotic approach in hopes to reduce the use of life-long insulin therapy and pain management in patients with chronic pancreatitis. This procedure is called TPAIT (total pancreatectomy with autologous islet cell transplantation). Key words used in the research process included: islet cell, transplantation, chronic pancreatitis. The data bases used included: Academic Search Premier, Google Scholar, PubMed, and NCBI. Out of 8 studies, there was a total of 597 patients, with a 97% survival rate, 89.5% of patient’s pain had decreased, 97% had achievable islet cell function, and 57.25% had partial to full function of islet cells within the first 2-3 years
Population Estimates and Demographics of Mirror Lake Fish Species
Through state sanctioned stocking and illegal fish dumping, Mirror Lake (North Woodstock, NH) has been subjected to many species’ introductions. In the early 1900’s the lake was home to 3 species native to New Hampshire; currently there are 9 different fish species found in the lake. It was previously unknown how this increase in diversity effected the health and recreational value of the fish populations present. This study investigated the current population sizes and health of fish species within Mirror Lake during 2018. Fyke nets were used to conduct a mark-recapture survey in addition to collecting length, weight, and age data on the fish. Population estimates and size distributions revealed large populations of Yellow perch and Pumpkinseed sunfish with very few fish reaching quality sizes. There appears to be very few Smallmouth bass in the lake, which is a popular gamefish species that has had healthy and sustainable populations in historical studies of the lake. Decreasing populations of bass and stunted panfish populations, negatively impact the overall recreational value of Mirror Lake. The data collected in this study can be used to make future fisheries management decisions with the goal of managing Mirror Lake sustainably and increasing it’s recreational value

Investigating Phytobiotics from Medicinal Plants as Antibiotic Alternatives
A pressing issue in modern society is the rising epidemic of antibiotic resistant bacterial infections that arise from the use and overuse of antibiotics as a treatment for bacterial infections. According to the CDC (2018), “each year in the U.S., at least 2 million people get an antibiotic-resistant infection, and at least 23,000 people die.” A promising solution to effectively fight the rise in bacterial resistant microbes and the financial toll of antibiotics is to use natural sources such as plants. The purpose of this research is to investigate antibacterial properties found in medicinal plants as more economical and effective alternative. In this study, active medicinal compounds were extracted with polar and nonpolar solvents using Soxhlet extractor. The extracted samples were tested for their antibacterial properties against Bacillus Cereus using Agar plates. Results revealed the area of inhibition around filter paper samples which indicated the inhibition of bacterial growth. Though all tested samples supported the hypothesis, most significant areas of inhibition were found in the samples of Lemon grass and Basil extracts. Thus, concluding that phytobiotics can be an effective alternative in preventing bacterial growth
Caring Scoops Ice Cream
The Small Business Ice Cream II class is a special topics course that focuses on starting and running a small ice cream business. The class, alongside the Enactus student organization, have identified what resources are needed to start a small business and have evaluated the start-up considerations needed to bring this business to market. Our goal is to create brand recognition through the sales of our ice cream both on campus and through wholesale accounts in the greater Plymouth area. In order to do this, we are actively conducting market research, aligning distribution channels with our brand, and developing market strategies to promote the brand and cause. We plan to donate a percentage of the proceeds to the Bridge House, a homeless shelter serving veterans and their families in Plymouth and the Lakes Region. We intend to seek funding and support for the purchase of a mobile bike cart that will sell 8 oz cups of ice cream on campus and market the Caring Scoops brand. In addition, we are working on creating long-term vendor relationships alongside The Common Man chain of restaurants to distribute and sell pint-size containers
