Mount Washington Boundary Layer Project
No full textThis study focuses on the vertical changes in air masses at the summit of Mount Washington, New Hampshire. The air masses at the summit of Mount Washington fluctuates between the boundary layer (BL), the free troposphere (FT), and the entrainment zone (ET). The BL height of the atmosphere is dependent upon meteorological factors such as insolation, synoptic scale events, and up sloping and down sloping processes (Bianca et al. 2011). The main purpose of this project was to look at how much did the maximum temperature change and the minimum dew point change when the air mass changed from the boundary layer to the lower part of the free troposphere during passage of a synoptic scale ridge. This research will examine a large number of cases examining the impacts of air mass changes on the daily maximum temperature and minimum dew-point temperatures. These results will help advance our knowledge of how vertical air mass changes impact alpine ecosystems and high elevation climate trends
College Veterans: Academic and Social Group Supports
No full textResearch indicates that many United States veterans are enrolled in postsecondary education. Veterans are challenged when transitioning to civilian life after their deployment (Parham & Gordon, 2016). These difficulties are intensified by the addition of transitioning to the role of student (Sargent, 2009). In a sample of Vietnam veterans enrolled in college, 60% reported experiencing difficulties re-adjusting to civilian life (Campbell & Riggs, 2015). Many factors affect this adjustment, including a deteriorating mental health status and a high level of dissonance between the values that characterize civilian life and the values that characterize military life (Parham & Gordon, 2016). There is a high level of socialization that occurs in the military which promotes strong identification with each member’s unit (Sargent, 2009). In contrast, student veterans tend to feel isolated from their peers on campus (Pellegrino & Hoggan, 2015). Due to the high level of need, along with veteran’s firm group-oriented mentality, we hypothesize that student veterans could benefit from social and educational support groups. However, research demonstrates a lack of engagement in support-oriented groups by veterans. This can be for a multitude of reasons, from social stigma, to the inability to connect with peers, to difficulty in self-expression (Olsen, T., Badger, K., & McCuddy ,M.D., 2014; Wesley, M. Jr, 2009)
Does the Online Disinhibition Effect Influence the Shaping of Fan Behaviors?
No full textThis poster is a visual representation of a research paper I wrote for my Communication and Media Studies course last fall. In that class, we had been studying an essay by psychologist John Suler, entitled “The Online Disinhibition Effect.” His paper examined the disconnect between the ways people conduct themselves online and offline, and outlined six possible contributing factors that could influence online behavior. After studying the paper, we were tasked with writing our own on the subject of online disinhibition. I chose to write mine on online fan communities, and investigated whether any of the six main factors of the Online Disinhibition Effect influenced the creation, growth, and interaction between and within fan bases. My poster follows the same progression between sources as my paper. It begins with an anecdotal introduction to the Effect and the goal of my research, before leading into various sources that outline the basic structure of fanbases and the benign and toxic ways in which fans can interact. I attempt to draw connections between these researchers’ points and the Online Disinhibition Effect, but my results remain largely inconclusive. I determine that this is a result of fan studies’ infancy as an academic field
