Une Promenade à Travers L\u27Histoire
The history of Franco-Americans is filled with hardships and hope, but is often invisible from many studies and books. My goal was to create an event that brings people together, whether they are Franco-American or not, and educate some on the history of the French in the U.S. From discrimination, to traditions, to food and music, there is much to learn about Franco-Americans and their history. Let me take you on a walk through it all. My presentation will showcase how I came up with my idea, created my event, and the results from hosting the event on campus, as well as some of the information that was presented at the event
Identifying Potential Flooding Events in New England
A 10-year objective climatology of potential flooding events in New England was created using a python script and National Weather Service (NWS) warnings, watches, and advisories (WWAs). The dataset ranged from October 1st 2008 to September 30th 2018 and was sourced from the Iowa State archived NWS GIS shapefile database. Using six NWS weather forecast offices, the data was filtered to only include flood related WWAs. A python script was created to identify events from exported comma separated value (CSV) files using the issued date and time. A separate event was defined by a time difference of six hours between issued time. The results concluded that on average there are 75 events per year that lead the NWS to issue flooding WWAs ranging from ~50 to ~100 events per year. Possible future work entails looking into the meteorological drivers of these events

The Climb Above Addiction cluster project addresses the need for awareness, support, and education for those affected by addiction. The event component of the project, similar to the Relay for Life but with climbing rather than walking a track, raised money to support a scholarship for the Plymouth House recovery program. Creative Arts Programming: Instrumentation to Assess Youth Self-Motivation
This presentation describes our partnership with a local nonprofit organization to create an instrument that assesses self-motivation of youth engaged in a creative arts afterschool program. An overview of the current research about creative arts programs and protective factors associated with self-motivation related to such programming are explored. Through our work we designed two assessment instruments; one to be completed by youth engaged in the creative arts program and another to be completed by the instructors of the program. We discuss how the instruments were designed, and the intended delivery process of each instrument. Additionally, we present implications for the nonprofit organization based on the potential outcome data, as well as how future school counselors can use the instrument data and the literature review findings in their future work
An Analysis of Surface Cyclones Associated with Winter Power Outage Events
UCONN has developed an electricity Outage Prediction Model (OPM), for Eversource Energy service areas in Connecticut. The initial OPM was developed for rain/wind events and a new OPM is being developed for Eversource service areas in New Hampshire and Massachusetts as well as winter events in all service territories. Outage events are defined as a 48-hour window that encompasses the significant weather that causes power outages. Thirty-seven winter outage events were identified between January 1st, 2006 and March 31st, 2018. The goal of this research is to analyze the synoptic-scale features that are associated with outage events. Winter outage events spanned from the months of October to April, with December having the highest frequency of events. A composite of cyclone tracks for each event demonstrated that lows most commonly form along the east coast and move northeast into the Canadian Maritimes. Analysis of the relationship between cyclone strength and number of outages showed that the magnitude of surface cyclones is mostly uncorrelated to the number of outages. Future work will include analyzing the upper-air conditions to develop a three-dimensional perspective of the atmosphere associated with winter power outage events
Characterization of Medicinal Compounds Found in Various Species of Basil
Basil, a popular culinary and medicinal herb, is cultivated in several countries resulting in a distinct flavor variation among the cultivars. This flavor variation, specifically among Thai basil (Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflorum), Italian (sweet) basil (Ocimum basilicum), and Indian basil (Ocimum sanctum), prompted us to explore the variations in the medicinal compounds of the three different species. Dried Basil species collected from various parts of the world were extracted using the Soxhlet apparatus. Active ingredients methyl eugenol, eugenol, methyl chavicol, and linalool were identified in the various species using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The TLC analysis showed separation of 2-4 compounds for various species, with Rf values ranging from 0.244 to 0.686. The antimicrobial properties were tested against bacillus cereus using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique with negative and positive controls of ethanol (solvent) and tetracycline, respectively. The results were compared between the different species and their corresponding chemical constituents
Defining Complexity of Continuous Functions in Relation to Artificial Neural Networks
Artificial Neural Networks are general function approximators. Some architectures of an Artificial Neural Network are unable to approximate certain functions to any reasonable degree of accuracy. We quantify the complexity of continuous differentiable real valued functions over some interval in order to find the minimum architecture needed to approximate the function over that interval
