Gauging the Effects of Sustainable Permaculture: a Biological Index of Sadhana Forest in Auroville, India
No full textDocumenting biodiversity in ecologically restored areas is critical to counter current mass extinction. Our study site was a 28.3 ha permaculture farm within a tropical dry evergreen forest consisting of a matrix of native and nonnative vegetation. We performed a non-destructive biological inventory using 28 GPSed locations to quantify the positive impact of sustainable permaculture. We used point counts (fixed surveys) for birds, and leaf counts, sweep netting, and flying insect counts for invertebrates. We also recorded a cumulative count of all species throughout the study. We found that animals were detected significantly more in areas of the farm with higher percentages of native trees, for both invertebrates and birds. Leaf counts also had significantly greater abundance of invertebrates in areas with more native species. Our data also had a trend of higher average detections in native areas. Our research corroborates other studies, and will provide data that support forest restoration of native habitats through permaculture

Emergency Department Nursing Work Related Burnout
No full textEmergency departments are high stress environments that may cause overwhelming experiences for nurses. As two future nurses that have an interest in working in an Emergency Department, we wanted to review why nurses who work in the ED have some of the highest burnout rates compared to other specialties. The purpose of the literature review was to find out what is causing the high levels of burnout and if these causes could be modified. Our method was a literature review from sources such as google scholar and CINAHL. We found that increase stress and ability to manage stress were factors contributing to burnout. We also found compassion fatigue, job dissatisfaction and low moral were highly indicated in ED nurses and contributed to burnout. Although this area is not well studied, it is an ongoing problem that needs to be addressed. One study suggested implementing wellness programs for ED nurses and staff. As to future nurses eager to make a difference, this is something we could implement in our practice or work place
Fish Abundance and Biomass Across Four Sampling Locations in Mirror Lake, North Woodstock NH
No full textMirror Lake is an oligotrophic lake located in North Woodstock, New Hampshire. Currently managed by NH Fish and Game as a trout fishery, there have also been introductions of other game fish species in the past. The last comprehensive study of Mirror Lake was published in 1985, so the recent state of the fishery was unknown. More importantly, it is unclear whether the current fishery is ecologically sustainable with regards to the habitat and resources within this lake. We gathered data on fish demographics throughout May of 2019 by using fyke nets in four different locations within Mirror Lake. Length and weight were recorded for each fish caught, and the data were analyzed to test for differences in fish abundance, body size, and biomass between net locations. Preliminary results show significant differences in Yellow Perch mean length and total biomass between net locations. We will also examine habitat complexity at each net location, to provide insight into the differences observed between these sites. The findings from this project help reveal the current state of the fishery in Mirror Lake, and highlights environmental characteristics that contribute to the distribution of individual fish species

No full textThe United States hosts the largest number of international students globally, demonstrating how globalized the world has become. Plymouth State University is among the thousands of colleges that annually take on students from the global community. However, first and second-generation immigrant students are not considered international, though they may share commonalities. Through student interviews, this research aims to identify the experiences of what it means to be an international student, an exchange student, and a first or second-generation immigrant student at Plymouth State University. The information derived will create a lens of empathy for the Plymouth community, and provide useful information on how Plymouth State University can better serve and celebrate the global community on campus

Get PDFThis presentation illustrates the rationale applied in developing the PEMI Youth Center Squam Lake Science Program Feedback Survey (PYCSP Feedback Survey). Existing literature was juxtaposed against the Science Program’s curriculum to produce a research-backed tool. The PYCSP Feedback Survey consists of an individual or parent form. The assessment consists of 18 items, soliciting feedback and measuring program efficacy. In accordance with best practices derived from literature, its administration to all PYC participants is intended to bookend school semesters. Based off what existing literature suggests, we predict the PYCSP Feedback Survey will effectively measure the efficacy of the PYC Science Program
The Effects of Cannabis Consumption on Schizophrenia Development
No full textCannabis is a common drug used by many, but there is the argument that it contributes to an increased risk of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cannabis consumption on schizophrenia development. The method for this study is a literature review using Google Scholar. The results show that there is an increased risk of schizophrenia development in cannabis users who start using in the adolescent years. The results also show that there is an increased risk of schizophrenia development in those who use cannabis that have a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia
