Linguistic Landscape of the Basque toponyms in the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Get PDFThis study aims to identify Basque toponyms from the official denominations of 135 partidos（equivalent to municipality）in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and to investigate their geographical and etymological origins. Basque toponyms in the Basque Country are mainly derived from oyconyms of Baserri, traditional wooden or stone barntype farmhouses, and almost all the Basques have surnames derived from oyconyms. Basque people emigrated to the New World from the Age of Exploration and settled in destinations,principally into the La Plata region. Therefore, in the Provincia de Buenos Aires,there is the largest Basque diaspora in the world. Twelve of the 135 partidos have Basque toponyms. These were not labeled by the Basques immigrants themselves but were given in honor of the great achievements of Basque predecessors, such as heroes of the Independence War and contributors to regional development. Even if the Basque toponyms were assigned by later generations,the linguistic landscape of Basque toponyms inherit the collective memory of the experiences of Basque immigrants and their contributions to local society.departmental bulletin pape
