departmental bulletin pape

This paper analyzes the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on job creations in Japanese firms’ oversea subsidiaries, which might have significantly influenced the local employment. We use Kaigai Sinshutsu Kigyo Soran data (Toyo Keizai Inc.) in 2020 and 2024 providing the number of oversea subsidiaries and their employees, and their compositions by industries, regions, and countries just before and after the pandemic. Our findings first show that the foreign direct investment (FDI) was decreasing during the pandemic, and it has not returned to its original level after the pandemic. Secondly, the number of Japanese firms’ surviving oversea subsidiaries remained at the same level during the pandemic, while the composition of the number of newly established oversea subsidiaries by area changed during the pandemic period. Thirdly, the number of total employees in oversea subsidiaries decreased in both the total of all industries, and the manufacturing industry. Comparing these changes from 2019 to 2023 of each area, we find that the number of total employees in North America and Oceania conversely increased. Fourthly, the changes in the number of total employees in oversea subsidiaries were diverse in Asian countries. Focusing on the manufacturing firms, the number of total employees decreased in most Asian countries, which is predicted to have been affected by factory closures in the lockdown. Lastly, the composition of the number of total employees by industries and the changes in the total employees through the pandemic vary by country. Total employees’ increase in pharmaceutical related industry is also observed in Asia, North America and Europe owing to growing demand in pharmaceuticals through the pandemic.departmental bulletin pape
