History of the Zhao Family of Guanzhuang Village in Changzhou Prefecture( 8 )
8. The Private Life of Zhao Liewen as a Gentleman
After retiring from his official post and returning to Jiangsu Province, Zhao Liewen began his life afresh in a house he had previously purchased in Changshu District in Suzhou Prefecture. He enjoyed his easy retirement life to the full: he took trips to Hangzhou with his family; he satisfied his curiosity to view all that was new and contemporary in Shanghai; and he maintained mistresses who were gifted with both intelligence and beauty. However, Zhao Liewen’s life was not free of care. He mourned the successive deaths of his brother and sisters, and he was grief-stricken especially at the demise of his eldest daughter who committed suicide in her twenties following her husband’s death. Zhao Liewen was determined not to become entangled in matters related to officialdom. Thus, he did not accept any of the positions offered to him by his acquaintances like Huang Pengnian, who was delegated to Suzhou as the Provincial Administration Commissioner. Zhao Liewen did not intervene in lawsuits that would have brought him considerable amounts of rewards. With the absence of any other sources of income, his large family was financially dependent on the rent accrued from his moderate real estate. Moreover, Zhao Liewen spent large sums on landscaping of the garden at his residence. Although his garden still exists, to the delight of visitors, this expensive pursuit further deteriorated the economic conditions of his family.departmental bulletin pape
Pieces housed in the Kyoritsu Women’s Educational Institution, with a focus on saihouhinagata produced at the Kyoritsu Women’s Vocational School
This study focused on saihouhinagata , miniatures of clothes and tools for daily living, among pieces donated by the alumnae of the Kyoritsu Women’s Vocational School. To efficiently acquire sewing technique, female students from the Meiji through the Taisho and Showa periods produced saihouhinagata in order to save time and money. The study aimed to generally investigate, as well as precisely classify and name these previously unexamined works, in order to create basic data to enhance the future sewing education of the school’s female students and the status of the school. A total of 396 saihouhinagata (31 from the Meiji period, 181 from the Taisho period, 90 from the Showa period, and 94 undated) were examined, and classified based on their characteristics. Most were unnamed, and we therefore named all the unnamed pieces based on the records of pieces donated by the alumnae or from other girls’ schools. In addition to the aims above, the study revealed basic information on saihouhinagata , which will serve as valuable data in a variety of studies.departmental bulletin pape
Japanese Food Culture Goes Global : the mechanism of the popularity of Japanese food in Thailand
Scholars who study the phenomena of transnational dissemination of cultural products often focus on media products such as TV programs and pop music while they tend to overlook the cultural products such as food and fashion which are not articulated in simple statistical data. In this article, Japanese food as a cultural product consumed in the Thai society is discussed by the qualitative approach. The history of popularization of Japanese food in the Thai society after the WWII, the world phenomena of the Japanese food as the“ healthy diet”, and the virtuous cycle of the popularization of Japanese cultural products including food are discussed with the basic concepts of globalization and localization in the study of cultural dissemination, which presents the model of the mechanism of the popularity of Japanese food in Thailand.departmental bulletin pape
