The 1954 Manila Asian Games and “Outer-land” Born Athletes : Japan’s Returning to Asia from the Perspective of Continuity
The second Asian Games in Manila was held in May 1954, following the first Asian Games at New Delhi in 1951. Contrary to the 14th Olympic Games in London (1948), Japan was allowed to participate from the very first Asian Games. It was an event of great symbolic meaning for the postwar Japan’s “return to Asia”.
While it is significant to examine the continuities and discontinuities regarding the before and after 1945, this paper especially focuses on Japan and Japanese athletes, to shed light on one continuity which is presented by “outer-land” (gaichi) born athletes.
Of the 151 athletes competing in all eight events, there was one “outer-land” born athlete each from Taiwan, Manchuria and Korea. Taiwan-born Yuriko Mizoguchi, who competed at age of 19 and won two bronze medals in the shot put and discus, dedicated herself to teaching physical education at her alma mater. Manchuria-born Masao Togami, who also competed at the age of 19 and won a bronze medal in the 200 –meter breaststroke, found success in the distribution industry. Korea-born Hirobumi Ichige, who competed at the age of 21 and won a silver medal in water polo, was not able to qualify for the 16th Melbourne Olympics.
Following Manila, the third Asian Games were held in Tokyo. By tracing the trajectories of these “outer-land” born athletes, this paper will reexamine the positionality of “Japan” between the prewar and postwar periods from different perspectives.departmental bulletin pape
The nursery teachers in Japanese Christian kindergarten and study abroad before WW2 : Focusing on Elizabeth Harrison’s school in Chicago
This article focuses on the missionary women and Japanese nursery teachers from Japan who studied in the Elizabeth Harrison’s school, the National Kindergarten Collage in Chicago to explore the transnational exchange on an international kindergarten movement between the U.S and Japan from the late 19th century to the 20th century. It examines how they constructed the transnational relationships by showing their writings were sent from Japan and the articles of the bulletins and newsletters in special archives. These materials show that the Christian kindergarten network in Japan and the alumni network in the NKC were intertwined and then succeeded to make the circulation regimes that Christian nursery teachers came and went between Japan and the U.S..departmental bulletin pape
A Study on Increasing Enrollment at Women’s Junior Colleges Through Mapping Universities and Junior Colleges That Serve as Destinations for Girls’ High Schools in the North Tohoku Region and Analysis of Demand for Out-of-Prefecture Higher Education
The purpose of this research is a basic survey to increase enrollment at the junior college to which the author belongs. First, we examined the situation at Japan’s women’s universities and junior colleges, and confirmed that marketing and branding are important in securing enrollment numbers. Focusing on the low rate of women in the Tohoku region going on to university, we assumed that there was latent demand for higher education. They then mapped the destinations of four girls’ high schools in the three prefectures of Tohoku and found that approximately 46% of girls went on to universities and junior colleges outside the Tohoku region. The study showed that by strengthening public relations activities in the Tohoku region, it is possible to expect an increase in the number of students enrolling.departmental bulletin pape
