Foreign Direct Investment(FDI) from Japan in the 2010s

    Get PDF
This paper explores the trends and characteristics of Japanese firms’ expansion throughout overseas in the 2010s. We analyze Kaigai Sinshutsu Kigyo Soran data(Toyo Keizai Inc.) which provides the number of overseas subsidiaries and their composition by industries and regions, as well as Bank of Japan’s foreign direct investment data, which aggregates the amount of foreign direct investment. First, our findings show that the number of Japanese overseas subsidiaries was rapidly increasing in the period of Japanese yen appreciation after the Great East Japan Earthquake, but the increase has slowed down since 2015. Particularly, we observe that the non-manufacturing firms were active in overseas expansion during this period. Secondly, Japanese overseas subsidiaries overconcentrated in Asia, North America, and Europe, and this trend remained throughout during the 2010s. Moreover, Japanese overseas subsidiaries were in industries of diverse categories, implying that various industries were involved in foreign direct investment for different motivations, but the composition of the number of foreign subsidiaries by industries was unchanged. Lastly, the purpose of investment abroad varied between industries and, in particular, between manufacturing and non-manufacturing. While the manufacturing firms tended to invest for production, non-manufacturing firms sought efficiency in distribution and information gathering.departmental bulletin pape

Purpose: To identify advanced nursing practitioners’ observations regarding delirium assessment during hospitalization among older adult stroke patients. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research design was used. The six participants included a Certified Nurse Specialist of Gerontological Nursing, a Certified Nurse of Dementia Nursing, and a skilled nurse with extensive experience in caring for older adult stroke patients. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on observations about delirium according to a case study developed by the researchers. We analyzed the observations in the verbatim transcripts and grouped highly similar ones. Results: The nurses’ observations were related to neurological symptoms due to cerebral infarction, general conditions, life functions after hospitalization, psychological changes, lifestyle before hospitalization, and life history; Meanwhile, they obtained information from family members related to neurological symptoms, life before hospitalization, and personal characteristics. Discussion: The information obtained from family members was used to clarify changes, before and after hospitalization, indicating a practice of individualized delirium care.departmental bulletin pape

Suggestions for Disaster Prevention Education in Elementary Schools : The Relationship Between Evacuation Training and Comprehensive Learning Time

    Get PDF
In Japan, where there are many natural disasters such as heavy rains and earthquakes, it is necessary to systematically engage in disaster prevention education in schools. Evacuation training plays a central role in disaster prevention education in elementary schools, and many drills involve evacuation actions implemented under the direction of teachers. Children are required to actively engage in evacuation training. Through these drills, they are required to reflect on their own actions, improve them, and identify issues related to disaster prevention. The elementary school course of study also positions safety education including disaster prevention as cross-curricular educational content related to contemporary issues. However, researchers have noted that there is a lack of disaster prevention education in individual subjects and domains, and efforts are required to address this through exploratory activities in the time allocated for general learning. The purpose of this study was to develop an activity plan for children to actively engage in evacuation training as a special activity(school event) held in elementary schools. In addition, we propose that evacuation training be positioned as an experience common to all subjects, and that learning activities be linked to setting exploratory tasks in time allocated for general learning, so that issues gained from experience related to disaster prevention can be resolved across subjects.departmental bulletin pape

ECEC Teachers’ Perceptions of Inclusive Child Care with a Focus on Developmental Disabilities : Focusing on the Gap between parents’ and ECEC teachers’ perceptions

    Get PDF
This study was designed to investigate ECEC(Early Childhood Education and Care)teachers’ perceptions of developmental disabilities and inclusive childcare and compare them by public and private and by preschool, as well as to investigate parents’ perceptions and compare them with those of ECEC teachers and parents, by means of a questionnaire. The results indicated that ECEC teachers were more aware of “content” than “terminology” for both developmental disabilities and inclusive childcare, suggesting a relationship with opportunities to learn and the extent to which inclusive childcare is implemented, respectively. A comparison of the perceptions of ECEC teachers and parents revealed that ECEC teachers were significantly more aware of both developmental disabilities and inclusive childcare. These findings suggest the need for securing opportunities for ECEC teachers to learn about and practice inclusive childcare in more detail, and the desirability of actively providing information to parents.departmental bulletin pape

The actual situation and the background of the outbreak of the modern women’s kimono with design of western plants.

    Get PDF
The plant patterns on women's kimonos of the Taisho period are a further advancement of the graphic expression of plants that sprouted in the late Meiji period, and it can be pointed out that the stylistic botanical expressions up to the middle of the Meiji period have almost disappeared. Many represent a combination of three or more plants, especially flowers. The combination of plants and flowers is classified into (1) combining traditional plant motifs from the Edo period to the Meiji era, (2) combining Western flowers with these, and (3) combining only Western flowers. Even in the group (1), which inherits the tradition of the types of plants that are used as motifs, the mainstream form of plant expression is expressed in a botanical encyclopedia-style graphic expression. In addition, among traditional plants, there are kimonos that combine auspicious plants such as paulownia, peony, and chrysanthemum with also auspicious animals such as phoenixes, peacocks, and cranes, but these are all black or colored kimonos with five crests. In the group (2) that accompanies Japanese flowers with Western flowers, many Japanese flowers are accompanied by roses, indicating that roses were a symbol of Western flowers. The longing for roses of Japan people, which began in the latter half of the Meiji period, became familiar in the Taisho era, and the pattern of women's kimonos also reflected this situation, and in the group that combined only Western flowers in (3), not only dahlias, daffodils, chrysanthemums, and other plants appeared, but also patterns representing only roses.departmental bulletin pape

Characteristics of abstract nouns in “~ noga N da.”

    Get PDF
In this research note, the following points are discussed based on BCCWJ usage examples. There are three types of abstract nouns that can be a subject of copular sentence of the form “N wa~kotoda”, those that can be a subject of copular sentence of the form “N wa~kotoda” by being limited by modifiers, and those that cannot be a subject of copular sentence of the form “N wa~kotoda”(it is difficult to limit their specific range by modifiers). The same characteristics can be seen in the predicate “Y wa Z da” in the kaki-ryori construction “X wa Y ga Z da”. The predicate “Y ga Z da” may be considered to retain the meaning of a specificational sentence, but depending on the meaning of “Z”it may be difficult to consider it a specificational sentence. Even if a sentence in the form “~noga N da” could be rewritten as “N wa~kotoda”, the functions the two sentences are different. While “N wa~kotoda” is an inverted specificational sentence, “~ noga N da” is not necessarily a specificaional sentence. The sentence “~ noga N da” with an abstract noun as the predicate has the following points in common with the presentational sentence: “no” is not a formal noun, the subject noun clause cannot be considered as a variable noun phrase, and it is similar to a descriptive sentence.departmental bulletin pape
