Changes in Preschool–Primary Education Transitions after the Philippine K to 12 Program : Analyses of Education Statistics and Annual Poverty Indicator Surveys
Get PDFThis study aims at preliminary analyses of the impact of the Philippine“K to 12
Program”(K– 12 ), a comprehensive educational reform implemented since 2012 .
Specifically, we focus on the influence of compulsory kindergarten-level preschool
education on primary education access and efficiency, as well as changes in the number of out-of-school children. The study utilizes available education statistics and household surveys, exploring the relationship between kindergarten enrollment and primary education indicators.
The analysis reveals that the net enrollment rate in primary education has increased
following K– 12 , with a stronger correlation between preschool and primary enrollment. However, intraregional disparities persist, even including Metro Manila. The study also identifies gaps for improvement in preschool enrollment rates. Future research should focus on micro-level empirical analysis and assess cognitive and noncognitive skills, gender differences, and regional and social stratification. A Study on the Possibility of a New Shape Design for Braille Blocks
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to propose a new shape of Braille blocks （also called Tactile paving or Tactile walking surface indicators） to replace the conventional square one. Squareshaped blocks are convenient for alignment, but they must be laid in a broken and unnatural form when the sidewalk curves. To solve this problem, I propose Braille blocks which consist of overlapping circles. This circular Braille block can be freely rotated and can provide a gently connected walking guide for the visually impaired and others. In addition, the wave-shaped outline is easy to distinguish from the straight line of the curbstone, contributing to the safe walking of the users.departmental bulletin pape
Research on clothing microclimate and clo value of daily wear in living environment
Get PDFThis study examined the relationship between clothing microclimate and clo value, through the daily life of women’s university students. The period of measurement was from late June 2022 to early June 2023. The subjects were seventeen K women’s university students.
As a result, the relative humidity in clothing was high (78±13%) during the summer season, while it was in the comfortable range of 50±10% during the other seasons. The temperature in clothing was a comfortable 32 ± 1℃ only in winter, and slightly higher in other seasons. The clo values during spring and fall were in the SET* comfort zone, but outside the zone during summer and winter. Especially in summer, forced ventilation and airflow should be added, as regulation by clothing is limited.departmental bulletin pape
Diversity and Inclusion Index with Networks and Similarity : Analysis and its Application
Get PDFIn recent years, the concepts of “diversity” and “inclusion” have attracted considerable attention across a range of fields, encompassing both social and biological disciplines. To fully understand these concepts, it is critical to not only examine the number of categories but also the similarities and relationships among them. In this study, I introduce a novel index for diversity and inclusion that considers similarities and network connections. I analyzed the properties of these indices and investigated their mathematical relationships using established measures of diversity and networks. Moreover, I developed a methodology for estimating similarities based on the utility of diversity. I also created a method for visualizing proportions, similarities, and network connections. Finally, I evaluated the correlation with external metrics using real-world data, confirming that both the proposed indices and our index can be effectively utilized. This study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of diversity and inclusion analysis.departmental bulletin pape

Japanese Firms’ Decisions on Foreign Direct Investment and Their Characteristics
Get PDFThis paper investigates Japanese firms’ decisions on foreign direct investment (FDI),
especially those associated with firms’ characteristics. We pile Kaigai Sinshutsu Kigyo Soran data (Toyo Keizai Inc.) of three years ( 2010 , 2015 and 2020 ), which includes the information of oversea subsidiaries and those parent firms, and explore the features of Japanese parent firms’ three kinds of decisions on expanding oversea business, which are business continuity, new entry, and withdrawing of operations. This paper concentrates on listing classification, industry, and head office location as parent firms’ characteristics.
Our findings first indicate that the survival rate of oversea subsidiaries is around 70% in all years and it is high in Asia while it is especially low in Africa. The new entry rate is around 30 % in 2015 and 2020 , and it varies by area. The withdrawal rate in 2010 - 14 is higher than that in 2015 - 19 , presumably due to the impacts of uncertainty during the economic crisis or recession in host countries. Secondly, focusing on the parent firms’ listing classification, decision-making on oversea business differs depending on the stock market in which firms and listed. In particular, the ratio of the Tokyo Stock Exchange first section for the firms continuing oversea business exceeds that for the firms newly entering oversea or withdrawing of operations oversea. Lastly, we compare oversea subsidiaries classified by head office location (prefectural classification) and industry (ISIC).
The parent firms of oversea subsidiaries are mostly located in the metropolitan area ( 90 %), especially mainly located in Tokyo ( 55 %). The composition rate of listing classification is diverse among areas and prefectures, and it has also changed overtime differently by area. Nationalist Movements in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia Before the First Indochina War
Get PDFMost past studies on the First Indochina War have almost exclusively focused on
what happened in Vietnam before and during the war. This paper is an attempt to
correct this situation and analyzes the nationalist and independence movements in Laos and Cambodia as well as in Vietnam before the outbreak of the war in Indochina in 1946 .
The first part of this paper examines the nationalist movement in each country under
the French colonial rule during the 1930 s, and the second part looks at the growth of the nationalist movement during World War II under the Vichy French rule and the Japanese military occupation. The third part examines the process by which the declaration of “independence” came to be declared in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia before the arrival of the United Nations forces to accept the surrender of Japan and disarm the defeated military force in September 1945. The final part of the paper examines how the nationalist leaders in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia tried to keep the “independence” they had declared but failed to keep it intact or prevent the return of the French force by the middle of 1946 . In Laos, Cambodia and most of southern Vietnam, the French rule returned. In northern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh’s Democratic Republic of Vietnam kept its influence but allowed the arrival of the French force under a preliminary agreement with France. Ho was forced to negotiate further with the French for independence, but their negotiations failed by the end of 1946 .
The independence movements in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia failed largely for the
following reasons. First, in all these countries the nationalist leaders were divided on the question of immediate independence and the resort to force against France. Second, no major United Nations country supported the independence of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia at the end of World War II and the indigenous military force in any of these countries was no match for the military forces of the United Nations and France.departmental bulletin pape
