    Information Technology in Service Organizations

    In this paper an attempt has been made to show how information technology (IT) is used as a strategic tool to meet competitive advantages and how it is rapidly becoming a necessary ingredient for achieving quality within the service industry. An in-depth review of information requirements for service sectors has been made and the possible relationships between IT and typology of service organizations, service quality and improving market position have been highlighted. Also, integration of IT and service dimensions has been addressed and some important issues required for a successful integration have been proposed. The findings indicate that different types of service operations require different levels of IT. Authors have also emphasized that IT plays an important role in the service industry, especially in financial and healthcare sectors and it will continue to increase in importance as managers further appreciate the benefits that can be gained, as IT is treated as a strategic issue and as the complexities of a large network, demand increased capabilities in information management

    The Situation of Top Research Centers' Websites in the Islamic World Countries: A Webometric Study

    Research centers are among the most important institutes in a scientific society. Using the AltaVista search engine and webometric methods, this research tries to find the performance and impact of the top research centers of the Islamic World Countries. The results reveal that from 57 countries, 40 of them did not have any research centers scored in webometric ranking and the rest of them had not been scored well in the webometric ranking model. In this study, we rank research centers’ websites based on some webometric indicators such as number of pages, linkages, WIF and Revised WIF.  Findings show that the ranking of the websites based on the WIF and revised WIF is almost different and there is a strong correlation between the number of research centers in the Islamic countries that were scored in webometrics and their ranks based on countries’ GDP

    Selection of the Appropriate Wireless Payment Technology in Mobile Banking

    As mobile technologies are becoming more advanced and mobile devices are making a big impact on daily life, a new type of payment system named mobile payment (m-payment) has emerged, enabling users to pay from their wireless devices especially mobile phones. This paper analyzes currently available Wireless-payment systems and finds the stored-value card to be the best overall payment scheme for mobile banking. A good payment protocol should balance the requirements of security and convenience. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is one of the prevalent wireless technologies is being embraced by the banking sector. This leads us to suggest that multiple usages can be added to m-payment systems with higher security merit so that they can gain a critical customer base. This study is trying to compare the way of  WAP , with other payment technologies and wants to show that by using Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) method in mobile banking can provide the goals of the users properly

    Spectral Analysis of Sequentially Sampled Signals for Applications in Information Processing

    This paper studies the sequential sampling scheme, as a solution to the problem of aliasing, where the sampling interval is restricted to a minimum allowable value DT. In the sequential sampling, the signal is sampled at intervals of DT, DT+Dt, DT+2Dt, DT+3Dt, ...; where Dt < DT and may be selected as desirable. The sequential sampling is, however, analyzed and it is proven that, when the ratio DT/Dt is an integral number, the associated spectral estimates give a Nyquist frequency 1/2DT. This sampling scheme can, therefore, be employed to yield a required cut-off frequency. The autocorrelation function estimation from the sequentially sampled data is then considered and the approach to this is discussed. Simulation studies are also used for empirical investigations of the sequential sampling. Furthermore, since with this sampling scheme no estimates of the autocorrelation coefficients are available in the initial time interval from 0 to DT, the initial autocorrelation coefficients estimation method is applied to solve this problem. This, in addition, provides some empirical studies of the latter approach. Moreover, the application of the autocorrelation function extrapolation method is considered, as a means of minimizing the sampling time and costs. The contribution of the sequential sampling in obtaining a desired cut-off frequency, is also demonstrated by data simulation

    Coping with Information Disruption in A Simple Multi-Actor Information System

    Information and knowledge management have become crucial to the development of a competitive edge on the market. This requires the gathering of complete and consistent information in an environment where companies are working increasingly with a vast network of partners. In this paper, we investigate the case of platforms on the tourism market selling trips in boxes thanks to a wide network of partners upstream (service providers) and downstream (distribution network). A particular case feature here is that the product is bought to be gifted which increases the complexity of the information gathering process. The information needs are defined as well as the potential information gaps.  Solutions are discussed in order to reach information consistency through greater Information System integration: bridging information gaps appears to be mostly feasible but still leaves one actor in the shade. Platforms in the tourism market, even though they may get a good degree of qualitative information, will not achieve perfect information

This paper will investigate parallelism in on-line transaction processing. It aims to specify those aspects of e-commerce transactions that would profit from parallel processing and analyze current parallel processing techniques to determine those which can be used for e-commerce transactions. The parallel processing techniques proposed in this paper can be easily applied to B2C and B2B on-line transaction processing. Although some parallel implementations of databases have been proposed, to the best of our knowledge, parallel implementations of on-line transaction processing specific to e-commerce are rarely existed

    Common Problems of Library and Information Science Education in Asian Developing Countries: A Review Article

    Education of Library and Information Science (LIS) has several problems that are caused by the changing nature of the discipline and the social, economic and cultural contexts in which LIS departments function. The aim of this article is to enumerate and discuss some of the common problems of LIS education in developing countries of Asia and suggest solutions. We show that as Asian developing countries share some of the social, economic and cultural elements, they have similar problems in LIS education. Therefore, the same solutions could be recommended such as setting up limited number of independent LIS schools, establishing or empowering accreditation agencies, flexibility in educational systems, more emphasis on research, developing in-service training, relocating the departments in new faculties, equipping the departments with new facilities, employing new and skillful staff, encouraging collaboration among faculty members and departments, diversifying courses and degrees, updating syllabi in an ongoing manner, taking advantage of IT, and creating and publishing LIS literature in native language

    The Influence of Semantic Web on Decision Making of Customers in Tourism Industry

    The Internet is already the primary source of tourist destination information for travelers. According to World Tourism Organization, about 95% of Web users use the Internet to gather travel related information and about 93% indicate that they visited tourism Web sites when planning for vacations. The number of people turning to the Internet for vacation and travel planning has increased more than 300% over the past five years. E-tourism is a perfect application area for semantic Web technologies, since information dissemination and exchange are the key backbones of the travel industry. The Semantic Web aims at making the wealth of information available on the Web accessible to more precise search and automated information extraction and processing, based on a machine-readable representation of meaning in the form of ontologies. One common assumption is that the Semantic Web can be made a reality by gradually augmenting existing Web data by ontological annotations. In this paper, we describe electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM), which has been referred to by various terms such as online communities, feedback systems, peer reputation systems, or consumer generated media. Such systems provide a global platform for customers to share their experiences, and also rate service providers. The primary focus was on the product review systems (PRS). These review systems are less personal but more ubiquitous platforms for e-WOM wherein consumers post reviews about the products/services they have consumed. These reviews are widely accessible to other consumers but are disseminated only when other consumer consult these reviews during the purchasing process. The results illustrate, consumers in the low involvement mode, had carefully analyzed the content of the message to arrive at the decision whether or not to trust the review. In the high involvement mode, they also gave importance to peripheral cues such as the demographic information of the reviewer. This paper shows that the role of social factors, apart from the main review content, can have significant influence on consumers’ attitude towards the reviews on the web

    A Method to Convert Sana’ani Accent to Modern Standard Arabic

    This paper presents an efficient mechanism to convert Sana’ani dialect to modern standard Arabic. The mechanism is based on morphological rulesrelated to Sana’ani dialect as well as Modern Standard Arabic. Such rules facilitate the dialect conversion to its corresponding MSA. The mechanismtokenizes the input dialect text and divides each token into stem and its affixes; such affixes can be categorized into two categories: dialect affixesand/or MSA affixes. At the same time, the stem could be dialect stem or MSA stem. Therefore, our mechanism, implemented by using a simple MSAstemmer, must pay attention to such situations. Then our dialect stemmer is applied to strip the resulting token and extract dialect affixes. At this point,the rules are applied to decide when to carry out the extraction of an affix. The experiment shows that Sana’ani dialect has three classes of distortions,which are prefixes, suffixes, and stems distortions. The algorithm normalizes such distortion based on the morphological rules. For each morphologicalrule the mechanism checks possibility of applying such a rule. That means if rule conditions be met, then the dialect affix will be replaced by itscorresponding MSA. If there is no restriction on applying the rule related to the distorted stem, then the rule can be considered as a parallel corpus of thedialect and MSA. Finally, the experiment computes the distortion ratio of MSA in Sana’ani dialect. For a Sana’ani dialect sample of 9386 words,16.29% of them have distorted suffixes, 0.70% have distorted prefixes and 2.17% contain distorted stems. These percentages are related only to theprocessed words

    Intercultural Discourse in Virtual Learning Environments:A Preparatory Study of the Perceptions of Students in an Iranian University

    The need for intercultural awareness and skills emerges strongly in both distance learning courses, and in social life in multicultural societies. The study of online language transactions is therefore an important aspect of the emerging culture and sociolinguistics of computer mediated communication. The research reported in this paper concerns perceptions held by students in an Iranian university about intercultural discourse in virtual learning environments. The research is the first phase of a larger project concerned with the nature of online discourse. Results are reported of a questionnaire survey of 200 students’ experiences of, and beliefs about, communication in a virtual learning environment. The results show that, notwithstanding the dangers of miscommunication, students generally view virtual learning environments positively and perceive them to offer possibilities of effective and harmonious communication and productive learning
