Assessment of Query Reweighing, by Rocchio Method in Farsi Information Retrieval

    Get PDF
Due to the lack of users knowledge of the collections used by search engines and in general retrieval systems, users can not express their information need appropriately in queries. In other words, they do not have enough experience to formulate their needs to find related documents. The idea of user’s query expansion aims to help users to improve and correct the queries. In fact, retrieval system, regarding the feedback it receives from user at the first stage, moves the query in set space to more related documents. Different approaches in information retrieval systems have been used; however, there has not been any assessment of efficacy of query expansion in Farsi information retrieval systems. In this paper, expansion of basic model of Rocchio, assessed as the primary model to retrieve Farsi documents, has been presented. As a matter of fact, the purpose of this study is to determine the effect of a standard and basic model on query expansion to retrieve Farsi documents, so that the researchers can compare their achievements of query expansion with the findings of this paper which showed a straightforward and positive effect on Farsi document retrieval

An Alternative Approach to Security Concerns in Digital Library Initiatives

    No full text
Digital preservation refers to an important aspect that most Iranian digital library initiatives lack. This component is Security. While a digital library may be misconceived as an information supply space without a physical form, the same security concerns in force for operation of physical library are valid. Unlike the analog materials, all digital copies of digital materials are original. A digital library can provide a tool whereby the user can authenticate the same material without compromising sensitive watermark key data. Watermarks must be impervious to premeditated alterations and tampering. A national digital watermark assignment center is proposed for sharing the burden of development and distribution of such security features to content developers

The Comparison of Hierarchical Structure of Subject Directories Yahoo, the Open Directory & Looksmart With Dewey Decimal Classification in 10 Selective Subjects

    No full text
This survey is aimed to compare the hierarchical structure of subject directories, including Yahoo, The Open Directory and Looksmart with Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) in 10 selective subjects. Five questions are raised to compare the broadness and the depth of the hierarchical structures in the subject directories and DDC and to study the effectiveness of the usage of DDC in the organization of the Internet resources. The data were collected by counting links and indentions. The results show that the hierarchical structure of Looksmart is broader and deeper than Yahoo, The Open Directory and DDC. This characteristic decreases its effectiveness as a classification scheme. This study also shows that subdivisions are rather evenly distributed in different hierarchical levels of DDC in comparison to subject directories. These features in addition to their general nature make DDC a suitable instrument for organizing Internet resources

    Get PDF
This study investigates correlation between journal self – citation and impact factor in Agriculture and Veterinary subject category through the scientific journals indexed in ISC's PJCR during 2001 to 2007. Citation analysis is used to conduct the research. The results indicate a significant correlation between impact factor and journal self – citation (r=0.425, sig= 0.000); that is, journals with low impact factor have less self – citation that indicates self – citation has a positive effect on impact factor. Pearson Correlation Coefficient demonstrates a relationship between impact factor and number of articles in negative side (r=-0.170, sig=0.037) that means the number of articles does not affect journal impact factor and also journals with more articles do not have higher impact factor. There is a significant relationship between the number of articles and journal self – citation (r= 0.596, sig = 0.000) that indicates the more number of articles the more number of self-citations. Findings show that journal self – cited rate in Agriculture and Veterinary subject category during 2001 to 2007 has undergone a descending process. After the removal of journal self – citation, the rank of 47 journals descended, 86 journals ascended, the rank of 18 journals did not change and the impact factor of 28 journals decreased to zero

This paper attempts to develop a method for readiness assessment of potential electronic commerce (e-commerce) success of Iran’s insurance industry. This method can expand in other industries. Key factors impacting e-commerce are identified from Wells, D. and Thomann, j. (2006) researches. This model is a two-dimension 3*4 matrix. Each dimension consists of variables that influence on insurance industries readiness. These variables on horizontal dimension are: People Readiness, IT Readiness, and Business Readiness and on vertical dimension are: Business Imperative, Executive Sponsorship, Development Method and Business Process Orientation. Each cells of this matrix evaluated by 5 questions. This research’s data are collected via a 60-questions questionnaire-based survey from Iranian insurance companies. At the end of the research, the Iranian insurance companies were strongly recommended by us to invest on e-commerce and e-insurance area

Real-Time Implementation of G.723.1 Speech Coder Using TMS320VC5402 DSP Chip

    No full text
This paper presents a full duplex, real time implementation of ITU-T G.723.1 [7,8] speech coder using the TMS320C5402 DSP chip which is based on a 16 bit fixed-point architecture. An optimization method is proposed in order to reduce the total necessary cycle time consumed in real-time implementation. The Multi-Pulse Maximum Likelihood Quantization (MP-MLQ) excitation search block which is the most computation-intensive block in the coder is restructured to reduce the algorithmic redundancy. In addition, efficient filtering methods and memory management are used for further optimization. The bit-exact verification with the ITU test vectors and performance evaluation aspects are also discussed in this paper

In this research, the citations received by DOAJ’s journals from the ISI Web of Science’s articles in 2003 to 2008 were studied and compared. The citations received by the journals in five fields (Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Pure Sciences, Technology & Engineering, and Health & Medical Sciences) as well as the difference among the citations received by DOAJ’s journals in the above- mentioned five fields were examined. The research method is citation analysis and the research data have been collected by means of Cited Reference Search in the ISI Web of Science. The English-language journals in DOAJ were chosen, and no sampling was used. Findings showed that out of 2953 journals, 321 journals (10.87%) received citations, and the total citations received by these journals were 19050 with the mean of 6.45 per journal; the journals in Pure Sciences received most citations (10116 citations, equal to 53.1%), and the ones in Arts & Humanities received the least citations (701 citations, equal to 3.68%). On the other hand, the findings of Chi-Square test (χ2) indicate that there is a significant difference among the citations in the above-mentioned five fields

A new integrated model is developed for information systems planning. In this model, entitled HISSPM, a combination of the strengths of Critical Success Factors (CSF) method, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique and Genetic Algorithms (GA) is used to identify and prioritize the required information systems. This model considers both qualitative and quantitative factors, as well as the importance of the factors to decision-makers, and can solve problems with relatively wide search space. Comparing the results of the proposed model with those of the famous available models reveals that the proposed model is valid and efficient. The model tested on a real world problem, resulting in a portfolio of prioritized information systems, under certain conditions and constraints, which have alignment with organizational goals, strategies and plans. This model can help encourge managers in optimal or near-optimal decision-making boost investments on required information systems
