Constraints in journal publishing and international research collaboration in the Asia Pacific Region

    Get PDF
International research collaboration is when researchers from various nations working together to achieve the common goal of producing new scientific knowledge and internationally co-authored papers are used to measure collaborative international research activity. The benefits of international research collaboration includes sharing of developed scientific knowledge and skills, and improve research quality, while in terms of collaborative journal publishing, it could contribute to publications in high impact journals and, increase the citation and visibility of researchers. International collaborative research activity and publishing is beneficial particularly to low-resources countries such as those in the Asia Pacific region. However, Asia Pacific region holds multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, populous, poor and growing ageing populations and these factors posed limitations to international research collaboration and journal publishing such as: lack of resources in terms of financial, institutional and government support; geographical distance; language barrier; lack of research skills; the challenge of acceptance into international journals; the lack of journals which represent the Asia Pacific region and lastly issues in managing the journals including financial, establishing a peer review and journal management, and operation guidelines. Efforts to address the challenges and promote journal publishing and international research collaboration in the region are warranted.

Does the Centrality Degree of Latin American Countries Predict their Citation Based Performance on Management Research?

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to determine if the centrality degree and density of Latin-American and Caribbean countries (LA-C) predicts their citation based performance in academic research in the management discipline. For our analysis, we use publication data of the Social Science Citation Index in the field of ‘‘Management’’ between 1988 and 2013, extracted from ISI Web of Science. The resulting database contained 1,079 articles reflecting the contributions of 19 LA-C countries. For the quantitative analysis we used a combination of Bibliometric and Social Networks Analysis techniques. To test the hypothesis a Multiple Linear Regression model with bootstrapping was run. The results show that the centrality degree of LA-C countries is positively associated to their citation based performance. The centrality degree of LA-C countries predicts a 54% of variance in their citation based research performance within the management discipline

Citation to Target Journal; A Motivation Based on Normative Citing Conformity

    Get PDF
Research on citation behaviors shows that authors tend to cite the articles of the journals to which they have sent their own articles to be published (Target Journal). Experts in this field have clarified this phenomenon in different ways. The present study follows different explanatory presentations with regard to Citing Conformity Factor. The research has been done in two parts: 1. Survey Method, and 2. Citation analysis method. The results of regression analysis suggest that some part of this phenomenon’s variance is justified based on Normative Citing Conformity. In line with conformity with group norms and through having the motivation for receiving rewards, the authors cite the articles in target journal. The relationship between Citing Conformity Factors (Normative, Informational, and Identification) and the motivation to cite target journal has been analyzed in this research for the first time

    Get PDF
This study aims to explore potential mutually beneficial Malaysia-Middle East partnership through seeking for factors affecting firm’s performance. A survey was conducted to analyze Malaysian firms that have ventured into nations surrounding the Persian Gulf. Both large-sized firms and SMEs are pursuing business opportunities in the region. The data was collected using highly structured survey questionnaire and was addressed to the top management in the company. A total of one hundred and twenty useful returns were received. The perceived performance was rather modest and analyses revealed there are no significant differences in export performance arising from differences in firm’s characteristics. However, the results showed there is significant difference of industry in non-economic measure of export performance and another exception relates to entry mode that can explain the variation in export performance. The results showed the relationship between firm’s characteristics and export performance. The results emanate from its expected theoretical implications to knowledge and practical implications to business and public organization. It lends support to the firm’s performance and enhances their export marketing knowledge with useful implications for international marketing. The results support the proposition from developing countries which depend on firm’s characteristics particularly industry and entry mode influence export performance. DOR: 98.1000/1726-8125.2015.0.77.0.0.65.11

The Role of Different Journal Access Models in Meeting the Information Needs of Shiraz University Researchers

    Get PDF
The aim of the present study is to investigate and compare the role of journals with different access models (including print, database, print/database subscriptions) as well as unsubscribed models in meeting the information needs of Shiraz University researchers. Using a bibliometric method, the communication studies the references used in Shiraz University scientific papers indexed by Thomson Reuter’s citation indexes (i.e. SCI, SSCI and Arts & Humanities CI) in 2010. A vast number of scientific journals are found to be available in Shiraz University, most of them repeatedly provided via different models. Over 90% of the journals receive no citations from Shiraz University researchers. The researchers generally tend to refer to unsubscribed journals as well as subscribed database journals. However, the journals mostly referred to by Shiraz University are found to be covered by database and print/database models. The uncitedness of a wide range of print journals confirms the rationality of the policy of discontinuation of print journals subscription in favor of e-collection development. It seems that the database model performs well not only in meeting the variety of information needs of the researchers, but also in providing the required core resources for the users. The unsubscribed model is revealed useful merely to fulfill the variety of the users' information needs; whereas it plays a minor role in providing the core needs of the researchers. The print model, following the database and the print/database models, is more or less effective in providing the core resources needed by the researchers of Shiraz University. Since a number of the core journals of Shiraz University are available in print model, it is suggested to renovate the subscription to the core print journals, preferably in online format

Correlation between Content and Traffic of the Universities’ Website

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to analyse the correlation between content and traffic of 21,485 academic websites (universities and research institutes). The achieved result is used as an indicator which shows the performance of the websites for attracting more visitors. This inspires a best practice for developing new websites or promoting the traffic of the existing websites. At the first step, content of the site is divided into three major items which are: Size, Papers and Rich Files. Then, the Spearman correlation between traffic of the websites and these items are calculated for each country and for the world, respectively. At the next step, countries are ranked based on their correlations, also a new indicator is proposed from combining these three correlations of the countries. Results show that in most countries, correlation between traffic of the websites and Papers is less than correlations between traffic of the websites and Rich Files and Size

Creating Appropriate Corpus for Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing in Persian Language

    Get PDF
Persian natural language processing (NLP) researchers have many limitations to access linguistic tools which are suitable for text processing. Therefore, researchin Persian text processing is very limited. Since dataset is an important requirement for experiments and their evaluation, we aimed to create appropriate corpora for information retrieval and natural language processing in Persian. The provided corpora in this article are based on HAMSHAHRI dataset which is appropriate for simple information retrieval and simple natural language processing because it has not been tagged. We converted this dataset to tagged collection and increased its text quality. The new corpora minimize the text preprocessing requirement. Here we have used STep-1 tools for text processing and have proposed some ideas to remove the bugs of these tools in order to increase their quality. At the end we used the new corpora for text retrieval and results showed performance improvement.

    Get PDF
This research studies the application of hybrid algorithms for predicting the prices of crude oil. Brent crude oil price data and hybrid intelligent algorithm (time delay neural network, probabilistic neural network, and fuzzy logic) were used to build intelligent decision support systems for predicting crude oil prices. The proposed model was able to predict future crude oil prices from August 2013 to July 2014. Future prices can guide decision makers in economic planning and taking effective measures to tackle the negative impact of crude oil price volatility. Energy demand and supply projection can effectively be tackled with accurate forecasts of crude oil prices, which in turn can create stability in the oil market. The future crude oil prices predict by the intelligent decision support systems can be used by both government and international organizations related to crude oil such as organization of petroleum exporting countries (OPEC) for policy formulation in the next one year.  DOR: 98.1000/1726-8125.2015.0.47.0.0.73.10

    Get PDF
Online stores are dramatically increasing and becoming popular, in a way that enterprisers invest tremendous resource and effort to meet customer requirements. However, the failure rate resulting from improper operation has been increasing year by year. By investigating the main cause, the operators cannot grasp the online store websites’ industry type and attribute category. Therefore, they fail to effectively use resource, show website image of the stores and information quality, to further meet customers’ demand and obtain the expected operational efficiency. Therefore, this research (1) grasps the website attribute of online stores by reviewing the literature; (2) sets up “online store website attributes structure” through qualitative method, serving as a basis for enterprisers to improve the operation/service mechanism; (3) sets up “industry breadth and depth graph”, so as to find the website content equilibrium degree of various industries’ online store and further obtain improvement strategy. It is believed that this research result, as said by the professors and scholars being interviewed, not only assists enterprisers to clearly grasp advantage/disadvantage and strategy of online store website attribute, but also promotes the effectiveness in resource utilization and the probability of success. Meanwhile, this research result can also effectively link practical application and academic value and provide researchers with new direction and scope.DOR : 98.1000/1726-8125.2015.0.27.0.0.84.10
