    Get PDF
This paper was aimed at clarifying the links between Uses and Gratification Theory (UGT) and Knowledge and Information Science in both traditional and modern contexts. Uses and Gratification conceptual model were also proposed both for library and information centers, and for interactive information retrieval systems. Review and analysis of published resources were used as the methodology of the article. Findings showed that UGT is in close connection with five laws of library science and their web version on one hand, and the user-oriented paradigm on the other hand. Therefore, the components of uses and gratification conceptual model of knowledge and information science in traditional and modern contexts consist of vast types of information needs, society, end users' features, information gratification sought, information gratification obtained, relevance gratification, library and information centers, and interactive information retrieval system uses. Applying UGT to knowledge and information science makes it possible to identify active and inactive users based on cognitive-cultural patterns. Moreover, automatic personalized interactive information retrieval systems were improved

Science popularization is an exigency in the era of knowledge explosion which has made the dissemination of scientific knowledge and attitudes of public aligned with such understanding of a prerequisite for further development of all societies. The concept of SKAQ has been introduced with an accompanying argument that can play a constructive part in making an objective determination of nation’s attainment level. The author, then, explicates a variety of rationales behind such proposition and maintains that in light of such rationales the Islamic nations can be regarded as prime candidates for urgent policy and action in this respect. A conceptual framework has been developed envisions of science popularization at two critical layers referred to as the institutional and cultural one. At both layers, though, the formal schooling is argued to have a pronounced role to play. Finally, certain recommendations as action principles have been suggested to consolidate future efforts in this respect

The Evaluation of Individual Authors by Journal-Specific Metrics Would Not Yield Realistic Results

    Get PDF
To test the reasonability of applying journal-specific indicators with the purpose of evaluating individual researchers, the present study attempted to examine the structural similarities between journal-evaluation indicators (i.e. JIF, SNIP and SJR) and author-evaluation ones (i.e. publication counts, citation per paper, and H and G indices) through factor analysis. The Iranian papers having published in SCI in 2008 were chosen as the corpus of this study to be analyzed. The results showed that the author- and journal-evaluation indicators belong to two totally different factor groups, and share no structures. On this basis, one may conclude that what the journal- evaluation indices evaluate is completely different from what the author-level ones do. It would be, therefore, illogical to use these two groups of indices interchangeably and for purposes they have not been designed for. Otherwise, consistent results cannot be expected to come out of such endeavors

The purpose of this study is to identify challenges of digital resources in academic libraries of Kerman province. Research methodology is descriptive- survey, a questionnaire is used for gathering data. Research sample includes 41 librarians of Kerman libraries and their managers. Results show that economic challenges, in order, are:  infrastructures and equipment purchasing, printed and digital resources providing, and using license. Libraries technological challenges respectively, are: their inability to compete with printed materials in features like user friendliness and energy consumption. Information services challenges are as follow: information preservation, identification and acquisition of suitable materials and linking electronic resources to printed information resources. It seemed that Kerman libraries are faced with problems more than these, and they were not able to provide their necessary technological infrastructure for keeping and providing access to library resources yet. In addition, financial constraints of resources, and especially, digitization of printed resources made the situation very chaotic for the academic libraries

    Get PDF
Book social media are reading communities primarily developed as online social networks. This study aims to find precise criteria and indicators for evaluation of book social network and examine and rank the most popular book social networks. The sample population included 10 English and two Persian book/reading social networks publicly available on the Web. A checklist containing 9 main criteria and 35 indicators was built up through a Delphi study and it was used to gather the characteristics of the sample networks. The results indicate that Shelfari has the highest number of features (87%) and therefore it ranks first. In contrast, Bisheh, a Persian social network, contains only 60% of the features and ranks last. The results reveal that there is no meaningful statistical difference among the scores. In other words, all of the twelve book/reading social networks contain almost similar features and have more than 50% of indicators. Several technical indicators were ignored as it was impossible to access and examine inner layers of the studied websites.  In general, Persian book social network scored less than English ones and this can be related to smaller number of audience, little interest in such online communities or language barriers in developing book social networks. These findings can lead to new patterns and recommendations for different societies to improve their book social networks as these websites can encourage reading. Unlike general social networks, little work has been done on book/reading social network in order to reflect their structural functional characteristics. Besides, this paper has resulted in specific criteria and indicators for evaluation of book social networks which can be used as a tool for future studies

A Hybrid Accurate Alignment method for large Persian-English corpus construction based on statistical analysis and Lexicon/Persian Word net

    Get PDF
A bilingual corpus is considered as a very important knowledge source and an inevitable requirement for many natural language processing (NLP) applications in which two languages are involved. For some languages such as Persian, lack of such resources is much more significant. Several applications, including statistical and example-based machine translation needs bilingual corpora, in which large amounts of texts from two different languages have been aligned at the sentence or phrase levels. In order to meet this requirement, this paper aims to propose an accurate and hybrid sentence alignment method for construction of an English-Persian parallel corpus. As the first step, the proposed method uses statistical length based analysis for filtering of candidates. Punctuation marks are used as a directing feature to reduce the complexity and increase the accuracy. Finally, the proposed method makes use of some lexical knowledge in order to produce the final output. . In the phase of lexical analysis, a bilingual dictionary as well as a Persian semantic net (denoted as FarsNet) is used to calculate the extended semantic similarity. Experiments showed the positive effect of expansion on synonym words by extended semantic similarity on the accuracy of the sentence alignment process. In the proposed matching scheme, a semantic load based approach (which considers the verb as the pivot and the main part of a sentence) was also used in order for increasing the accuracy. The results obtained from the experiments were promising and the generated parallel corpus can be used as an effective knowledge source by researchers who work on Persian language

Success of an organization, more than anything else, depends on the human resources. Behavioral science emphasizes that organizational success mainly depends on efficient use of human resources. It is especially true in organizations such as libraries. To promote “positive thinking” ” among the staff of libraries and information centers, training courses should be arranged. To improve librarians' efficiency, these training courses should be held within the framework of an overall continuous program. In this research, the degree of “positive thinking” of librarians in 13 central university libraries affiliated to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT) in Tehran was assessed. Using random stratified sampling and random digits’ table, 144 employees were selected from among the total 218 employees working in these libraries as sample population. An author made checklist, which was based on Ingram and Wisnicki’s 5-factor questionnaire and consisted of 30 items, was applied as data-gathering tool. Descriptive survey was applied and the results showed the average values for positive daily functioning, positive self-evaluation, others evaluation of self, positive future expectations, and self-confidence were 3.737, 3.833, 3.965, 3.94, and 3,555 respectively. Among the five options of always, often, limited, sometimes and never, which are five options of Liker’s questionnaire, the tendency was toward choosing either often or always.
