Using Appraisal Theory to Predict Emotional and Coping Responses to Hurtful Messages

    No full text
Based on appraisal theory (Lazarus 1991; 1999), this study examined the degree to which primary and secondary cognitive appraisals of hurtful messages predict the amountof hurt individuals feel, and the coping behaviors they enact. This study presents a significant step forward in its operationalization of both primary and secondary appraisal variables by treating hurt as an outcome, rather than an antecedent, of the appraisal process, and considers an extensive range of coping responses. We surveyed participants (N = 217) about hurtful messages they received within an array of relationship types. The results revealed that fours types of appraisals predicted the amount of hurt recipients experienced. All coping behaviors except positive reappraisal were significantly predicted by the primary appraisals (categories of risk) and secondary appraisals (perceived intentionality and frequency of hurtful messages). The findings explicate appraisal theory’s potential in explaining individuals’ responses to hurtful communication

Emotional Communication on Romantic Relationships: Design and Validation of a Measure in Mexico

    No full text
Relational communications is a basic tool to allow individuals express and interpret the messages in their close relationships, including information about the daily interaction and some vital issues about the relationship (Guerrero, Andersen, &Afifi, 2007), which will contribute to their general subjective well being. Thus, communication plays an important role on couple interaction, satisfaction and the fulfillment of their personal and interpersonal goals. Base on this, a pictographic emotional communication self-report for romantic relationships, was designed and validated. To do this, we studied a sample integrated for 384 individuals (50% males and 50% females) in an actual couple relationship. Participant’s age was from 18 to 69 years old with at least bachelor’s degree and Mexico City´s residents. Findings show a scale with proper psychometric characteristics. Some interesting factors were obtained and reflect the relationship among emotions and interpersonal behaviors.Language: Spanis

Construction of Leadership among School Teachers: Does Social Identity Matters?

    No full text
Present study attempts to interrogate the dominant trait based approach of leadership and tried to relook it from group perspective. Investigation was conducted in two phases where teachers were asked about the quality of ideally effective leader they would prefer. The obtained responses were thematically transformed into broader variable which were factor analyzed. Under social identity traditions, leadership is not based on individual characteristics’ but it is a group process (Reicher et al., 2005). Based on this metatheoretical assumption, the present study interrogated the psychometric dimensions of leadership constructed among school teachers and questioned whether social identity matters in the perception of leaders? Result obtained seven dimensions (69.078% of total variance) in which four dimensions viz., achievement orientation, conventional personality orientation, nurturant and health orientation (together constituting 31.133% of total variance) showing the importance of individual characteristics’ of leaders. However, other three dimensions viz., ingroup prototypicality, entrepreneur of identity, and group productivity together constituting 37.935% of total variance showed traces of social identity as potentreason behind the preferences of ideally effective leader

    No full text
The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationship between the sex role orientation and the relationship satisfaction in Turkish dating couples. Seventy dating couples completed Bem Sex Role Inventory, theRelationship Assessment Scale and a demographic information form. The results indicated that while perceived sex role orientation of the partners was related to relationship satisfaction, actual sex role orientation of the partner was not related. That is, individuals who perceived their partners as androgynous reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction than the other perceived sex role classifications. The results were discussed in terms of earlier studies, sample characteristics and bias in close relationships

A Qualitative Study of the Role of Friendship in Late Adolescent and Young Adult Heterosexual Romantic Relationships

    No full text
Friendship is considered one of the pillars of satisfying, long-term, romantic relationships and marriage. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the role of friendship in heterosexual romantic relationships. Eight single participants, ages 18 to 29, were selected from two West Coast metropolitan areas in the United States to explore whether or not friendship facilitates future long term relationships. Participants reported that friendship helped establish economic independence, adult identity and improved communication skills.  Participants also reported that the development and stability of long term relationships was tenuous and temporal in their lives. Late adolescents and young adults in our study believed that their selection of partners was very different than their parents and that the success of their long term relationships was enhanced by a strong friendship with their partner.

    No full text
Literature on childhood friendship is quite diversified, focusing on various aspects (social, emotional and cognitive, etc.) revealing the complex nature of the subject. This study aimed at investigating different aspects of friendship in children in order to contribute to the formulation of a theoretical model forunderstanding friendship as a complex system of relations. Forty children aged seven to ten years, participants of the “Projeto Caminhando Juntos” (Cajun), in the city of Vitoria, were interviewed. This project offers several courses for children and adolescents from six to seventeen years old enrolled in schools in the city of Vitoria and aims to integrate children socially, avoiding them to stay on the streets, promoting physical education, moral and social children from disadvantaged communities. The results refer to friends network (including the best friend), space and time, activities and communication with friends, psychosocial processes (social support, competition, aggression and reconciliation), cognitive and affective processes (perception of friends and relationship and friendship and emotions) and the development of friendship. These aspects were discussed in light of their possible integration into a theoretical model of childhood friendship. We conclude that wide theoretical models of friendship and interpersonal relationships are necessary to guide research in the area

Adult attachment and incidental memory for emotional words

    No full text
A  dual task of attachment priming and memory recognition was proposed to explore the effect of adult attachment styles on the incidental memory for emotional words. Subjects completed an attachment priming task which intends to activate internal working model of  attachment  by describing attachment-related scenes,  and then an incidental memory  recognition  test of words which differ in emotional meaning and relevance of attachment styles. Signal detection theory was used to compare the discriminability index and decision criterion of emotional words in subjects of different attachment style. Results showed that subjects with secure attachment styles performed better than insecure-attached subjects in the memory recognition test, in terms of higher hit rate, lower false alarm rate, and higher discriminability index.  We extended the influence of attachment styles on cognition to lower level of incidental memory, not just on higher cognitive level with emotional arousal as suggested by previous research

An outline of relationships dynamics: Mechanism of the relationship between the Chinese people (in Chinese)

    No full text
The Chinese interpersonal relationships dynamics is based on specific channels formed between the two re-stratifications of the society. The most obvious feature is the gulf between "official" and "the people" as well as the connection to each other. Chinese society does not encourage personal struggle. Personal growth can not be separated from their families and the place which contributed to his/her success. As a pattern in such a society, the official standard and family orientation are the values related to the social basis of fame and fortune.

Public and Private Physical Affection Differences between Same-Sex and Different-Sex Couples: The Role of Perceived Marginalization

    No full text
Despite its connection with relationship satisfaction, research on physical affection is scarce and fails to disentangle private and public displays of affection.  It is important to examine both types if marginalized couples are less comfortable displaying affection publicly. The present study examined whether same-sex couples display less public (but not private) physical affection than different-sex couples due to stronger feelings of relationship marginalization. It also examined  how public/private affection and marginalization relate  to  relationship satisfaction.  Women in  committed  same-sex and different-sex relationships completed surveys of public affection, private affection, marginalization, and relationship satisfaction online.  As predicted, women in same-sex relationships displayed less public affection than those in different-sex relationships, an effect mediated by general societal marginalization.  Both private and public affection predicted higher relationship satisfaction, whereas feelings of marginalization  by friends/family  predicted lower relationship satisfaction.  We  discuss implications for  relationship counseling and propose new ways of looking at marginalization
